Women's Hoops Hello: Bre Hampton-Bey (2017)

Submitted by Raoul on

Still no 2015 commits for Kim Barnes Arico and the Michigan basketball program, but they today picked up a 2017 commit—5-8 guard Brelynn "Bre" Hampton-Bey—after getting a pledge from Akienreh Johnson in the 2016 class last week. Having attending Springfield Middle School, Hampton-Bey will join Johnson at Toledo Rogers High School this fall. Hampton-Bey also plays AAU ball for the same program as Johnson—the Toledo Vipers.

There's little available on the web about Hampton-Bey—which isn't surprising given that she just finished 8th grade—but If I come across anything else I'll post it here or in the recruiting board thread. I did find this video of her dunking—but certainly not on a 10-foot rim. There's another video of her supposedly dunking on 9.5-foot rim, so perhaps that's the height here.

Crazy, right? I have to admit I'm a bit leery of these sorts of early commits. I prefer John Beilein's approach, which has proven successful even though he doesn't make early offers.

I'm guessing that Bre Hampton-Bey attended the Michigan Elite Camp and impressed the coaches enough to warrant a scholarship offer. Or I hope she's at least been on campus for an unofficial visit. In any case, she's not even the earliest women's hoops commit I've seen lately. Last month, a prospect in the 2018 class committed to Evansville.

Are you kidding me! A fucking scholarship offer and commitment from an eighth grader! That is ridiculous. Time to start giving the roids to my kindergartener. I can not believe this is what recruiting has come to. I mean, the kid doesn't even have a single grade on her high school transcript and we're offering her a college scholarship. WTF Note: no reflection on this young woman/child/ I don't even know what to call her. It's more a rant towards offering scholarships to kids who aren't even in high school.

I've seen both girls play not only in their school circuits but AAU and they are great ball players. Michigan did their job early and picked these girls up. Great team ball, great bball IQ and can score. But what I love about these two they are humble, extremely humble girls.

Absolutely amazing. She hasn't even played a single high school game, yet she been offered a scholly to Michigan. What kind of world do we live in?

Big deal she is good in Middle School!!! Waaaay too early to determine if she'll be a legit Big Ten performer.

For those skeptical of this early commit, I've heard two different people say that Hampton-Bey might be the top player in Ohio in her class. Even if she doesn't end up #1, if she's in the top 5 in Ohio, say, she'll be a highly ranked national prospect given how deep with talent the Ohio classes usually are.

Also, here's a nice feature from WTOL on both Hampton-Bey and Johnson, and their committing to Michigan. They seem like nice kids.
