WKTA Roundtable--why is Brian always so rude to Ira?

Submitted by Dennis on
I understand that Brian has a better holistic understanding of football than Ira, given that Ira is mostly a stats guy, but I don't understand why Brian is always so dismissive and rude to him. I think it's okay to disagree with someone who might know less than you, but it comes across as lacking emotional intelligence and typical "I know more than you, so you're dumb" attitude that guys exhibit discussing football.

Sam is amazing and keeps the roundtable fun and interesting - even after a disappointing loss. Ira uses the roundtable to give his own opinions instead of facilitating and letting his guests air time.  This week's roundtable was especially Ira-heavy, which was frustrating.  However, Brian, Ed, and Craig are always polite and professional to Ira (and their banter with each other is in good fun).

I listen most weeks and don't read any deeper meanings into the exchanges - it's just a panel of guys shooting the breeze about various topics.

So, if we're going to discuss the roundtable, I will add my 2 cents:

I do find Brian to be the one I'm most interested in their opinion, because it's typically backed up with very detailed film review; however, I do wish he were less abrasive toward differing opinions – whether that be callers or peers. Unlike other people below, I do believe Ed brings value, albeit, very data driven (which can be flawed). As a data person and someone who really believes in the power of advanced stats, I do like to hear what the data says about matchups, etc. Earlier in the year his model had UCF #1 and that caused him to be mocked and in hindsight I believe that just proves his model has value.

One thing I really wish would not happen is the marginalization of The Venerable Craig Ross. There are times when he chimes in and he is immediately cut off once the roundtable thinks they get an idea of where he is heading with his point. Even Sam is guilty of cutting him off when he is in the middle of a point. I know he can bring up dated references, but I find his insight fascinating and I wish they would allow him to speak more often.

Having said that, the roundtable is #1 on my podcast rankings. I would listen to an episode of that before anything else.

Thanks for doing them!

I love the roundtable, moreso than that blog usually because there are different points of view.

My only problem with Brian on the roundtable is that he mumbles sometimes and I can't hear what he's saying.

thank you. I always want to call in just to tell Brian to stop mumbling and trailing off at the end of his sent..... mumble... S&P....mumble... PFF.... mumble

BRIAN, do what the cartoon bear avatar says and enunciate. And sit up straight, you sound slouchy. And cut that hair, hippie.

I stopped listening to the podcast because I thought Brian was rude/dismissive of Ace and Jamie Mac - not all the time, but enough. I figured if I just wanted Brian's take without all that I could just read the column, which is what I stick to now. I didn't listen to the roundtable so can't comment on that.

On the subject of Ira, I find him very difficult to listen to.  If I turn on WTKA and he's doing any sort of extended talking I always switch it off.  It often feels like he is just talking for the sake of talking, and usually about something petty.  I get that filling dead air is part of the job, but he isn't very good at it.

And I’ve never heard any radio personnel have as many awkward pauses mid sentence as he does. I am forced to turn it off because of discomfort. Listening to him interview Steve Clarke was painful and he brought some very poorly thought out ideas regarding a football playoff to the table.

I have the same take with most of the so-called "college football analysts". They talk to hear themselves talk and are afraid (insecure) of dead air. And say way too much about nothing. Plus I hate their joking banter.

The NFL announcers and analysts are sooooooo much better than the college ones!

LOL, it is called joking around with someone.  Brian is just busting Ed's chops for entertainment value. It makes the segment more listenable to me but you I guess you can't control how someone interprets something.

Brian's reactions to things that are dumb are hilarious.  I agree that Ed doesn't add much. His points tend to be pedantic and not grounded visual observation of the game. Not much insight otherwise.  His voice and speaking style sound like a teen who recently completed puberty but hasn't found his best voice modulation yet.  He generates more awkward moments than insights.

I think Ira tries to talk too much and overwhelms the discussion. It's the MGoBlog roundtable, so obviously I wanna hear from Brian, but I also like having an environment where respectful sane people can push back at some Brian ideas and we can hear stuff discussed.

I don't really wanna hear Ira like, give a speech where the only response you can have at the end of it is "yep" or hear from some moron who still thinks total yards matter in the year of our lord 2017.

Not getting all the dislike.  I love Ira, both as the main guy and the co-host/backup.  Love the sound of his voice and the way his thoughts flow seemingly without effort.  Prefer Sam and Ira together, but if Sam's away as he was this week I've no problem listening to Ira.

After a loss, the only radio voices I really want to hear would be Ira... Dan Dierdorf... Janssen.

Brian should be rude to Ira. He is really annoying. He consistently interrupts people when they are trying to speak and does nothing but tells stories about his family and “friends.” Is he 10 years old? I don’t mind a story once in a while, but I’m tuning in to hear about Michigan sports, not about how he went out to dinner with his parents or had “friends” in town over the weekend. Also seems to not know what he’s talking about with sports and feels the need to talk constantly and mistate dates, times and names. If it wasn’t for Sam I would never listen. Oh wait, you went to the women’s softball game with your daughter and played golf with your Dad over the weekend? That’s great, but I don’t give a shit.
