Fascinating intrigue right now with Wisconsin and Michigan competing for the same pool of coaches.

While I don't want Schiano at Michigan, the disdain for him on these boards is ridiculously over the top.  He is a good coach.  He turned Rutgers into a winning program.  His defenses were regularly excellent, with middling recruits.  He is not going to be a "disaster" by any means.

I hope Schiano does go to Wisconsin, and does well, just to see the reactions of all the experts here who insist that he is incompetent.

Convenient stat to cherry-pick, as if 10-win seasons are the only measure of success.

In the six seasons before Schiano, Rutgers had 4,2, 0, 5, 1 and 3 wins.

Under Schiano, they had seasons with 11 wins (once), 9 wins (3 times) and 8 wins (twice).

But if 10 win seasons are the sole metric for success, I have some bad news for you --Harbaugh only had one 10-win season at Stanford!  And he didn't have any 9 win seasons!  Oh no, Harbaugh didn't turn Stanford into a winning program!

Schiano is an ass and a mediocre coach.  Yeah, let's bring in the guy who thought that tackling someone in the victory formation was a good idea.

Also, I've heard this tune before - barely above .500 (68-67) career record and he turned around a crappy irrelevant program.  Who in recent memory does that sound like?  I'll give you a hint - he's also looking for work right now too.

No thanks.

Brian is constantly citing a coach's performance vs historical trends at a particular program. I.E. Hoke at Ball State, Mullen at MSU, etc. Why wouldn't the same apply here? Schiano would not be the disaster that Hoke was. Granted I would still be pissed if we hired him but this board is way overstating his incompetence.

The biggest issue with Schiano is the internal division that it would cause. In my opinion, he's less capable of uniting players, admin, alumni, and fans than Les Miles is.  He has baggage (not of the same sort) and a reputation, but no national championship and no Bo/Michigan ties.  This is why nobody is advocating him.  Maybe he is a good coach; maybe a good fit at Wisconsin, but his upside just isn't good enough for Michigan.

He's a fine coach but not someone we should be targeting.  The disdain is over his being mentioned as a Michigan target when, quite frankly, he does not have the record or the qualifications as someone we should be targeting.  He had one good season... seven years ago... and didn't even win the Big East that season.   He had a losing conference record in 3 of his last five seasons and flamed out in the NFL.

So many keep saying this about the guy..but There is MUCH more to good coaching than W/L record...

Point...the guys considered the best in the business didn't have a sterling record at State when he was poached by LSU. Like Schiano he too only had one 10 win season mixed in with a bunch of mediocre 6-6 type seasons and never won a bowl game.

Rutgers was hot garbage before Schiano much like MSU before Saban.

4,4,7,11.-- Gary Anderson's win totals the first four years at Utah State. He then won 19 games in two seasons at Wisconsin. Wouldn't he have been a good HC candidate at Michigan? My point is Anderson, like Schiano, took over lousy programs and made them into winners. BTW, Utah State, before Anderson got there, didn't win more than 7 games for over two decades. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Utah_State_Aggies_football_seaso…

It took Schiano two additional years before his breakthrough at Rutgers, and, despite that, most thought Schiano was a fine, if not spectacular, candidate in 2007.  The problem is that with Schiano we saw what happened after his breakthrough.  Losing reords in the Big East three of the next five years.  A disasterous two years in the NFL.  We have more information now than we did in 2007 or was available for Gary Andersen two years ago, and that information says he's probably not a great coach and Michigan should be able to do better.

He was 67-66 in 11 seasons was 20 games under 500 in the Big East and never won the conference. That is not being a good coach, heck that isn't even being a mediocre coach. Save the BS on how it was Rutgers. Any good coach in 11 seasons would have won the conference at least.  There are tons of coaches who win at lesser programs. His record is horrible and doesn't show anything except that with the exception of one year he was bad or mediocre at best. It's like some in our fan base don't understand the difference between a good coach and a mid level coach.
