Wisconsin Leaving Adidas for Under Armour in 2016

Submitted by Blue Noise on

Some of you may remember Wisconsin, a school Michigan used to be in the same conference with and regularly competed against in football. Well, looks like they are the latest big name program to jump off the Adidas train in the last few years following Notre Dame, Tennessee, and us.

I guess it's worth noting that they picked up Miami and Arizona State in that time, but the outlook still doesn't look great for them.

Wisconsin will be the third B1G program outfitted by UA, after Maryland and Northwestern.

Next year's game at the Big House v. Wisconsin should sting a little for Adidas, with two of their former marquee names squaring off in the first year of new duds.

I was kind of pulling for UA to pick up the MI deal, because I know folks that work at UA and I have friends that know/like the founder. But I'm also not a huge fan of uniformz and worried what they'd try to force on M.

So, that's a winding way to say I'm glad UA got this and M is with Nike. I don't have anything against Adidas, but I think a third apparel company making waves is a good thing.

you find the discussion of an in-conference football team switching fro Adidas to another gear company just as we did earlier this year to be off-topic?  If so, I think that "off-topic" encompasses too much material.

If Under Armour was ever seriously in contention for us, it had to sting when Nike put up the massive $$$. So I guess this is considered a good consolation prize for UA.

I am so glad Michigan is going back to NIKE and especially glad that they will be the only football team that has Jumpman.

From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel article:

The amount of annual cash compensation made under the existing contract with adidas varied from $750,000 in the first two years of the deal to $800,000 in the last three years. Under the proposed agreement with Under Armour, UW will receive an annual cash contribution of $4 million.

I am going to say that the over $3 million extra in additional contributions might have been a big draw to the Board Of Regents. Adidas has been out there saying that their branding strategy was changing a bit at the college level, but losing schools is a strategy, after all.

The guaranteed minimum royalty that the get from Adidas is $100,000. Under Armour is offering a minimum of $450,000.
