Wilton Speight transfer updates?

Submitted by Brodie on

So, I remember Wilton saying he was planning to enroll at a new school for the winter semester. Is that even possible at this point? I'm surprised we haven't heard even so much as a rumor about his destination.

Should go to Toledo. With Cody Thompson announcing he's coming back for a 5th year, they'll have 3 of the most talented receivers in the league. Wilton will get plenty opportunity to display his skill set. Toledo also gets Miami (ytm) coming to town.

He would do well at a Western Michigan or James Madison or Old Dominion. Speight was not highly recruited out of high school in Virginia. In fact, he was not offered by either Virginia Tech or Virginia and that speaks volumes when it some to recruiting. He was offered by Borges and Hoke and it was very surprising that he would up starting at UM last year when Michigan was super stacked. Harbaugh knew that his 2016 team was stacked everywhere but QB and that's why he didn't want to play a redshirt Frosh like Peters. In fact, Speight beating out O'Korn and Sugar Shane out of De La Salle also spoke volumes about their capabilities to lead such a big time program. O'Korn finally showed it on ther field this past season. Speight cost Michigan the Iowa, Ohio State and Florida State games in 2016 (3 losses). He is not a big time QB and neither is Peters. If Patterson out of Ole Miss is eligible, then Harbaugh will have his first true QB at Michigan and the Wolverines will finally beat the Spartans and Buckeyes. Patterson is the real deal with SEC experience.

Do you not realize that without Wilton we had no chance at winning the OSU game last year?  People point to that pick six, but that was Smith totally wiffing on a blitz pickup.  I will defend Wilton for that game till my dying days.  The guts he showed by going out there with a messed up shoulder trying to get us the win, his 4th down td and immediately putting up two fingers wanting to go for it was awesome.  The dude gave everything he had to the team and for you to shit on him like that sucks.

If he decides to hang up his cleats. I think he nearly had a disabling injury with his fractured neck vertebrata, which could have injured his spinal cord. May be get his MS somewhere and try his hand as an assistant coach. I doubt he gets drafted though he could sign with a NFL team as a FA.

I was at the Iowa game, and I wouldn't say Speight cost us the game. It was real cold and windy, the OL was getting blown up by #67, and Kinnick was going crazy by the 2nd quarter. Speight was hurt too. The play calling wasn't that great. Certainly, give Wilton some blame, but it wasn't all him.

Offense struggles aside, we had our strongest unit on the field at the end of the game (the defense) and they managed to give up just enough yards to make the field goal 80%ish percent as opposed to 50%.  Their kicker hadn't been good from deeper range.

There was zero threat of a pass from Iowa's QB and the defense couldn't get the necessary stop.

The most memorable part of the game was definitely the Devin Bush targeting call on the punter.  Hilarious moment when that punter did the little summersault and Bush whiped him out.  Don't think it should have been a targeting call though.  At that point I knew he was gonna be a monster linebacker.

does it really matter where he is going other than just filling up the Board. Just another average player here at Michigan. See ya later Wilton, good luck. Next.

Is he just running from competition? Gets beat out so he leaves. Not the “adult” way to face controversy. It’s called quitting for us elder statesmen. Just my opinion.

Dude is going into his 5th year.  Won the starting job two years in a row, his last chance to be the starter he wants to get in.  He would have to be a mile ahead of the others because if even all coaches would go with the young guy.

But then again I'm sure you'd be happy to slug it out and have a good chance at riding the pine...

The delay in picking a school makes me wonder if he believes he is starting power 5 QB material but only lesser schools are giving him the 'you can start if you come here' approach. Shane made a good choice with CMU. I think Speight would be wise to follow a similar path.

So, still no news on where he is going? Guessing pretty much every school has started it's semester now meaning he is out for spring practices. Is his career over?
