Will Harbaugh Change The Offense To Fit Shea Patterson's Skill Set?

Submitted by Santa Clause on

Shea has shown the ablity to move in and outside the pocket. I was wondering if Harbaugh would change the offense to a more spread/pistol look this season to maximize Shea's talents. What do you guys think?

What would Dantonio do that Harbaugh won't. I'd like to say it's interesting to read your point of view on these many different topics, but I won't lie. It's not interesting at all, never is.  Perhaps though, instead of simply detailing what's wrong with what Harbaugh is doing, you could give us a little insight as to how the great one in East Lansing whose biggest accomplishment toward a winning record vs. UM was stepping into the job at the right time would go about getting things done.

In other words, looking forward to anything you can offer that's outside the norm, which is always the same, useless and negative. And it's better to cheer on your own site than to be a distraction on the site of your superiors.

isn't in the same stratosphere as Kaep as a runner. Completely different offense.

I get your point that Harbaugh built his offense around Kaep which is somewhat different than Alex Smith but the core offense principle is still the same.

I was just thinking about all of the WR talent the team now has (assuming Van Jefferson comes as well). With Black, DPJ, Collins, and Martin all having a year under their belts, Perry being a known commodity, Crawford maybe picking it up with better QB play and Jefferson thrown into the mix as well...we could see some pretty awesome 5 wide packages if the coaching staff wants to take advantage. And in drooling over all the WR talent, I forgot about the TEs. Now let's just pray that the Oline allows us to have nice things.

I'm with you. Grant is apart of the team, however, I doubt he plays. I expect the OL to take a step forward with this line up:

Bushell-Beatty | Bredeson | Ruiz | Onwenu | (?) Runyan Jr. possibly?

The RT spot is going to be the battle in the beginning of the year. Maybe have some unbalanced sets with the TE's to offset that against ND.

Good enough kid who did make a few WOW plays but his overall body of work will not cut it if he wants to continue starting or even getting a large amount of playing time at Michigan. Firm handshake and best of luck to him elsewhere should he choose to leave.

We heard about all last off season.  I remember reading several times that Harbaugh was telling all of the WR recruits in the last class that Michigan would be switching to more of a 4/5 wide spread pass offense in the future.  Along the lines of the Pats offense.  One of the things that kept Nico in the class.

I think the idea intergrating spread elements into their game is what's best.  Put athletes in space and let them work.  Odds are you're not going up against a defense that has 11 NFL players on it.

IF Shea beats out Dylan and Brandon for the job, then I can easily see Harbaugh running a Kaepernick 49ers-esque pistol offense with him.

I think that kind of style would suit the college game really well compared to what we have now, which apparently requires a star QB (Andrew Luck/Kevin Hogan caliber) to perform at an optimal level than what we've seen out of JOK, Speight and (present day) Peters.

will there be changes on the offensive coaching staff? I'm not so sure that our current staff on that side of the ball, as it is currently structured, is capable of making such adjustments if Patterson wins the starting job over Peters and McCaffrey.

I don't think Pep and Harbaugh will have an issue. Pep came in talking about passing spread sets and Harbaugh has shown himself to be nothing if not adaptable over his career.

Drevno on the other hand... who knows.

I'm more worried about getting a WR coach to continue coaching up our young talent.

He was a QC staffer at LSU, support staff at Ole Miss. The NCAA changed the rules about hiring family members, so his brother can't hold a similar position here. He's a long ways from becoming a full fledged assistant at a top program.

There will probably be a few minor wrinkles but I think Harbaugh likes guys to run when nothing is open or the blocking breaks down only. We have been building towards power run for 3 years, I doubt we are going to go spread and zone read now.

This is basically what I would say.  Harbaugh's definitely a guy with a core philosophy, but he's also a pragmatist - and a brilliant football mind.  He's always got new wrinkles, something different to try, different modifications and so on.  So from his core principles, he can develop a massive array of offensive options.  Within that array, he'll choose the ones best suited to the personnel he has at any given time.

It’s likely he commits, but we still have to find out if he is immediately eligible, and has to win the job. I’m very confident coach knows how to handle Shae

If the o-line shows that they can protect the QB, I expect our offense to throw more regardless of who is playing QB. They wanted to do that early this year and realized with this o-line, it's just not possible. But the line improved, and I'm cautiously optimistic that they will be at least average.
