Will Durkin Take Any Coaches With Him?
It doesn't seem likely he'll bring any defensive position coaches with him as almost all have direct connections to JH, but with the traffic jam atop our offensive coaching ranks it wouldn't surprise me if say Jedd Fisch went with him to Maryland to become OC and we promoted T.J. Weist to Passing Game Coordinator/WR Coach.
With all the discussion about who our next DC should be, I felt it might get lost that we could end up with one or two more vacancies on staff.

Anyway, I say we just promote Mattison to DC and hire Jerry Montgomery back as the LB coach.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:33 PM ^
Better not.

Harbaugh is the best at getting the top coaching talent wherever he is. He will replace anyone who leaves with as good or better options. Who doesn't want to work for someone with an amazing track record at placing coaches like Harbaugh? It's going to be an annual tradition where coaches depart and it's a good thing for our program that our coaches are in high demand.
On a side note, I think one of the added benefits of the satellite camps is that Harbaugh interacts with a lot of high school coaches on their way up. That means he has recruiting ties, but also can evaluate coaches for future spots when there are openings. Maybe not directly from highschool to Michigan, but if they get jobs in other college programs.

These fucking idiots at Testudo Times think Mattison going to Maryland "would make a bunch of sense if Harbaugh doesn't promote him to DC"
Mattison is 66, his grandkids are here in MI, and he most likely would've retired had not it not been Harbaugh who became head coach here and kept him on staff.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:36 PM ^
Agreed that's not happening. I was actually thinking it would make sense for Mattison to retire after this season, though the odds of that happening now are substantially lower.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:36 PM ^
That shit ain't happening. But a Mike Zordich, Greg Jackson or Jedd Fisch isn't outside the realm of possibility.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:39 PM ^
So......three NFL coaches are going to work under a guy with no head coaching experience at any level?
Color me skeptical.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:44 PM ^
I'm saying one of them could leave for a promotion... And just to refresh your memory, two of the three were working under him this past year.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:50 PM ^
There's a difference between being a coordinator paired with position coaches and a head coach with assistant coaches.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:53 PM ^
Zordich was at Youngstown State before Harbaugh hired him. If Durkin offered him a DC or associate HC position, I could see him leave as he doesn't have that many ties to Harbaugh or the current staff. Remember he was the last hire made.
Fisch has a lot of college experience and is one of the lowest paid assistants on the staff due to his Jaguars buyout. If another school offered him the OC position, I could see him leaving.
The price of having good assistant coaches is that other schools will try to poach them. Harbaugh went through it before at Stanford. Look at how many assistant coaches (especially OC) Saban has gone through at Alabama.

MD twitter world is also claiming that they have an "in" with top defensive recruits that were coming to Michigan and also that Michigan's defense will fall apart next year. Guess they don't know that we also had a top tier defense the past few years as well.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:41 PM ^
MD twitter world? So like 10 people?
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
11 people, but all with MD basketball as their avi (and zero football knowledge).
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
The only one that I think makes some sort of weird logical sense would be Jaybaugh. Someone posted on another thread that the Ravens Super Bowl ring would impress a lot of Maryland area recruits.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:37 PM ^
You don't leave the nest after one year in it.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:44 PM ^
Super bowl rings impress recruits no matter what part of the country you're recruiting.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
Like who, OP? You mentioned Fisch but he was brought in by Harbaugh.
I think Durkin will probably put together a stuff from the coaching fallouts in the SEC/ACC. He'll have to take a few chances on some unknown guys as I don't think his own coaching tree is that extensive just yet.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:39 PM ^
But all have also spent a year working with Durkin now. I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two position coaches leave for promotions. It also wouldn't worry me as I have the utmost faith in JH to replace them with as good or even better options.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:35 PM ^
Can you plant the seed in JH ear to reach out to Charles Woodson as DB coach, this has to be his last year in the NFL right? He loves Michigan and would be a great recruiter I'm sure
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:41 PM ^
Love me some CW but, we are pretty solid in that coaching area, thanks.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:44 PM ^
Legendary players are generally not good coaches BC the traits that made them legendary are god given not teachable.
See Mike Singletary...
December 2nd, 2015 at 6:26 PM ^
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can do...wonder why the fuck you can't just do what they do, it's easy.
Better teachers generally come from those people who understand the struggle to improve and every step along the way, not those who just jump through all that due to winning the genetic lottery.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:53 PM ^
We're going to be seeing Chuck on TV, networks want him.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:37 PM ^
Zordich maybe?
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:45 PM ^
Even if he offers him the d-coordinator job, that would be a bad move by Zordich. He has a great secondary to work with at Michigan. If Lewis comes back, it should be even better next year.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:40 PM ^
It's still a promotion and he would be able to run his own defense.

I have a sick feeling hoke will be the DC. He knows everyone already and its a better fit for him

Les miles could be his DC. He is a defensive coach.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:43 PM ^
He's not?!
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:00 PM ^
NO. HE IS AN DEFENSIVE COACH. And I guess I should have specifically stated sarcasm.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:58 PM ^
Interestingly he's also an offensive coach.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:43 PM ^
Les is an OC guy

Congrats to Durkin, good luck next time we see you. Prediction 42-3 Michigan.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:47 PM ^
Will probably take Jim Harbaugh as QB coach I'm sure.
December 2nd, 2015 at 3:06 PM ^
I saw several rumors that he will be taking Jebb Fisch with him as his OC. That is an unsubstantiated rumor though so take with a grain of salt.

Sad to see Durkin go, but life goes on. What about Mattison as DC and promoting one of these high school coaches (from Cleveland or New Jersey) on staff to a coaching position if theyhave the backgroun for it?
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:04 PM ^
No thanks to Mattison. I don't know if I can handle corners playing 10 yards deep on 3rd and 3 any more

Durkin taking Mattison with him........
I don't see that happening

Not happening...Mattison has always stated UM is his last coaching stop.

Bo Pelini?
Yes, I know he's a Buckeye. Just trying to think outside the box.
December 2nd, 2015 at 4:19 PM ^
Can you imagine the collective coach rage on our sidelines? Both Harbaugh and Pelini screaming at the side judge? Poor guy might break down and cry on national TV
December 2nd, 2015 at 7:22 PM ^
Twitters saying he's pushing to hire Chris Partridge, which is certainly an "uh oh" situation...
