Will Durkin Take Any Coaches With Him?

Submitted by Shakespeare on

It doesn't seem likely he'll bring any defensive position coaches with him as almost all have direct connections to JH, but with the traffic jam atop our offensive coaching ranks it wouldn't surprise me if say Jedd Fisch went with him to Maryland to become OC and we promoted T.J. Weist to Passing Game Coordinator/WR Coach.

With all the discussion about who our next DC should be, I felt it might get lost that we could end up with one or two more vacancies on staff.

Harbaugh is the best at getting the top coaching talent wherever he is. He will replace anyone who leaves with as good or better options. Who doesn't want to work for someone with an amazing track record at placing coaches like Harbaugh? It's going to be an annual tradition where coaches depart and it's a good thing for our program that our coaches are in high demand.

On a side note, I think one of the added benefits of the satellite camps is that Harbaugh interacts with a lot of high school coaches on their way up. That means he has recruiting ties, but also can evaluate coaches for future spots when there are openings. Maybe not directly from highschool to Michigan, but if they get jobs in other college programs.

These fucking idiots at Testudo Times think Mattison going to Maryland "would make a bunch of sense if Harbaugh doesn't promote him to DC"

Mattison is 66, his grandkids are here in MI, and he most likely would've retired had not it not been Harbaugh who became head coach here and kept him on staff.

Zordich was at Youngstown State before Harbaugh hired him. If Durkin offered him a DC or associate HC position, I could see him leave as he doesn't have that many ties to Harbaugh or the current staff. Remember he was the last hire made.

Fisch has a lot of college experience and is one of the lowest paid assistants on the staff due to his Jaguars buyout. If another school offered him the OC position, I could see him leaving.

The price of having good assistant coaches is that other schools will try to poach them. Harbaugh went through it before at Stanford. Look at how many assistant coaches (especially OC) Saban has gone through at Alabama.

MD twitter world is also claiming that they have an "in" with top defensive recruits that were coming to Michigan and also that Michigan's defense will fall apart next year.  Guess they don't know that we also had a top tier defense the past few years as well.

The only one that I think makes some sort of weird logical sense would be Jaybaugh. Someone posted on another thread that the Ravens Super Bowl ring would impress a lot of Maryland area recruits.

Like who, OP? You mentioned Fisch but he was brought in by Harbaugh.

I think Durkin will probably put together a stuff from the coaching fallouts in the SEC/ACC. He'll have to take a few chances on some unknown guys as I don't think his own coaching tree is that extensive just yet.

Can you plant the seed in JH ear to reach out to Charles Woodson as DB coach, this has to be his last year in the NFL right? He loves Michigan and would be a great recruiter I'm sure

Those who can't do, teach.  Those who can do...wonder why the fuck you can't just do what they do, it's easy.

Better teachers generally come from those people who understand the struggle to improve and every step along the way, not those who just jump through all that due to winning the genetic lottery.

I saw several rumors that he will be taking Jebb Fisch with him as his OC. That is an unsubstantiated rumor though so take with a grain of salt.

Sad to see Durkin go, but life goes on.  What about Mattison as DC and promoting one of these high school coaches (from Cleveland or New Jersey) on staff to a coaching position if theyhave the backgroun for it?
