Why Michigan Defeated Ohio (according to some Ohio fans)

Submitted by Darth Wolverine on

I thought I might share this with my fellow fans and it's killing me that I don't have a link to provide, as it appears this post was taken down from the site. It was just on there a couple days ago but I just can't find it unfortunately. I e-mailed the text to Brian, so that is where I got it from (just pasted it here of course). The bold text below was a post on the Ohio ESPN message board for Michigan fans and of course, it's full of nothing but lame excuses. Oh what selective memory Ohio fans have, as they cannot recall the flux the Michigan program and fans went through in 2008, 2009, and maybe you can throw 2010 in there. Again, I apologize for not having a link, but this was really on their board.

An Open Letter To Fans of That Team Up North

Congratulations. You did it!! You finally did it!! After 10 grueling years of merciless beat-downs and coming up short in the few close games (save one) you finally put together the winning recipe to beat the team that caused your players pants to be yellow. You rose up in talent and skill, in game planning and sheer determination, in coaching and spirit, and you "feasted" on a dominant OHIO STATE team, coming away with a 6 point victory at home, failing to cover the spread. We are back you say!! Right? Or..... are you really saying are we back??

Ohio State was 6-5 with a 3-4 record in the B10. We barely beat Indiana and Toledo (a team that beat you fairly recently).

Ohio State has been under an NCAA microscope all season.

Ohio State has faced extra suspensions and new allegations during the year.

Ohio State was using a first year / interim coach with no other head coaching experience. A true rookie.

Ohio State had a very young and injury riddled defense. Out were Williams, Sweat, and Bryant.

Ohio State was using a TRUE freshman QB. Not a red shirt who had been around the system for a year already.

Ohio State was dealing with all of the media hype and distraction surrounding the Urban Meyer hiring.

This was the team you beat. Congratulations on that hollow, tinny victory. You didn't take a monkey off your back, you simply plucked his last few fingers off that were still holding on after all of the above. Congratulations. Yet, even with all of that happening this year and leading up to the game you  know deep deep deep down in the same place where you have shivered and groaned all these years that you were lucky to beat this  beleaguered team. Lucky indeed to beat a 6-5/3-4 decimated Ohio State team AT HOME.

You know in your heart of hearts that Braxton Miller overthrew not one, not two, but three wide open WRs who had left your sorry secondary in the dust and would have scored certain TDs, but didn't. You know that just one of those passes being completed meant that you lose yet again. You feel that same sick, soaking, feeling of despair that you have felt for so very long. Too long. You know in your heart that this may very well be the last year you win for a very long time again. You are a shell of your former self. A has been. You know that you had a total of just two calls against you the entire game, that won't happen in Columbus next year.

When Meyer shuts down the one year run you had on the Ohio talent pipeline your program will shrivel up once more and return to its' dormant, near extinct state that it was just last year. When he opens new pipelines into Florida and the south and starts pulling in national talent it will only get worse. You will return to the same punching bag you were the past seven years. The same team that lost to Appalachian State, Toledo, and such. The same team that was our doormat year in and year out. We will own you once again. You don't feel we owned you? Please. Just look at your reaction to winning against the worse Ohio State team in decades. It was sad, pathetic, and revealing. Just go to MGoBlog. The gloat-fest is so sad as to be worthy of pity. You would think that UM just won the National Championship. You would think that a powerhouse team just came in and you whipped them good. But no, you beat a team that was 3-4 in the B10. Congratulations. Revel in the victory. Gloat. Climb to the top of the highest mountains and cry out "We are Victors!!" "We have returned!!"

It will make your precipitous fall from those falsely inflated heights that much more enjoyable to watch.

Sincerely, an Ohio State fan.

1.  You didn't beat us in 2010, nor anyone else because you are cheats and liars.

2. the teams you beat in 2008-2009 were some of the worst in UM history

3. We're on the upswing, and we beat you with most of the same players that couldn't even come close to beating you in the past 3-4 years.  New coaches are working wonders.

4. Enjoy your bowl ban and scholarship reductions.

edit:

5. We had 3-4 true freshmen playing on D and some walk ons as well.  Think things might get better once we (first time in what 3-4 years) field a defense w/o walk ons and freshmen playing?

Vacating a win is just that, no one won the game.  Michigan still lost.  Every team Ohio State played does not have an ansterisk next to their record.  All losses at the hands of the team vacating the win still stand (same with losses by the vacated team).

I would say Michigan beat Ohio State this year because Ohio State wasn't that good, hence 6-6 in a meh Big10 AND Michigan being much improved from years past.  Not to say you guys shouldn't relish the win, you should, but much like the 09-10 UM teams, this team just wasn't all that great whether it be experience or coaching or what (leaving out 08 for obv reasons).  OSU got mudstomped by a woeful Miami team, beaten by Purdue and could have easily lost to Toledo.  I'm not saying this win means nothing or shouldn't count or any garbage to that effect but in terms of reality, Michigan was a better team this year.  The Games that really, really hurt are when the better team goes down, THAT is what the Game is about.

Furthermore,

6)  Their record probably did suffer because of all of the players that they had suspended, but a) They were suspended because they had broken NCAA rules affecting their eligibility; and b)  All of those players were conveniently back in time for the Michigan game (as well as the game before, to shake off the rust).

7)  Miller was a true freshman, but he had played in 10 games (most of them as a starter) by the time that he played Michigan.  Does the author of the letter give Michigan a pass on all of the losses during RR's tenure because of all of the freshmen and first-year starters that he had to play (especially at QB)?  Not likely.

8)  Overthrowing wide open receivers should be considered the same as TDs?  If that is the standard, then Denard's stats would include about 15 more TDs, and we really beat Iowa and MSU.  National Championship here we come!  Every game includes missed opportunities.  If Miller was an accurate passer then maybe they could have won.  If the replay officials had pulled their heads out and Hagerup doesn't derp the punt, then Michigan blows them out.  If my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

So his argument on Braxton's performance is essentially that if several of his passes hadn't been incomplete, then they would have been complete!!! BRILLIANT!!!

this is a highlight reel of all the most flawed comfort-logic any fan can think up.  even we Wolverines may have been tempted to generate similar thoughts when we were downtrodden (although to our credit, I highly doubt that we wrote open letters dripping with arrogance to the other side).  we also didn't have an incoming coach to be excited about, so ... let's just let them be excited.  you can tell by virtue of the fact that this person needed to even write this letter that there is doubt in his mind.  he's kind of scared, even just a little bit.  it's ok.  but really, you can't exchange ideas with a person like this.  you can't change the mind of anyone who lacks the requisite equpiment.

40-34; 58-43-6 The fact that an Ohio fan would actually take the time to do this just adds to the sweetness of the victory. And, unfortunately for Ohio fans this rivalry is decided on the field, not in press conferences. Go blue

I post on the ESPN boards quite often. I tend to stay away from the Ohio board, but this past week I had to peruse it to see all the sour grapes, and they were and still are plentiful. I kept telling Ohio fans, "The more you post garbage like this, the worse you look." They just kept doing it over and over again, excuse after excuse.

Bottom line is 1) 40-34 and 2) their players, boosters, and former coach did this to themselves. They have no one to blame but their own species.

How does this even make sense. I'm pretty sure ohio fans gloated when they beat Michigan in the worst 3 years at the program. So now we beat an average ohio team and they use that as an excuse. Can you say hypocrite.

I said this Saturday and I'll say it again:

This has to be the first time the loser of The Game has invoked all of the "problems" their program is going through in a year where the winner has an ENTIRELY NEW COACHING STAFF. Lulz.

Well, if you ever get to that point, you will really enjoy it.  Because, we have a front row seat to Ohio's precipitous fall right now, and we can tell you from experience, it is freaking sweet.....

To be fair, a lot of Michigan fans use one of those arguments against Sparty fans (that are overly) proud of the recent trend in the rivalry.  When including the record from Brady Hoke's COY campaign, we have been 12-20 against the Big Ten and 25-24 overall during the stretch that Michigan State has beaten us four times.

A win is a win and a loss is a loss.  Sparty beat their biggest rival thrice during down years (and again this season) and we beat our biggest rival during their worst year since 1999.

You can't fault the team in better condition for taking care of business (so yes, congrats to State and Michigan, respectively), but I feel like both rivalries are cheapened when the teams aren't at their traditional strengths.

Perhaps we are being a little too hard on Little Brother.  But our point is this:  We've had winning streaks against Ohio State when they were good, we've had winning streaks against Ohio State when they were bad, and we've had winning streaks against Ohio State when they were in between.

MSU has no streaks against us when we are at the top of our game.  Come talk to us when you have a streak against us when we are at our best.  Then we'll listen.  In the meantime, don't act like you're USC until you do.

I figured it would take us at least a few years to get the OSU monkey off the back. Then, the Senator was exposed for being the big liar and cheat, and that sped up the process. If the sanctions are unjustly light as many of us are expecting, there's a good chance that we're going to see some epic Top-5 battles in the near future between these two teams. Can't wait.

The overthrown pass to Posey is a load of crap.  If we are playing what if, then what if the refs didn't overturn Fitz's TD since it was not conclusive (or if he gained one more foot so both views looked like a TD), then it's a 10 point lead, GAME OVER.

Just enjoy how Ohio fans are stewing over the Grenade celebration, Hoke calling them Ohio, and of course: 40-34.

Playing the what if game in sports is ridiculous. The whole "If Braxton Miller wasn't so bad, think how good he'd be!" argument cracks me up every time. Yes, Buckeye, if your QB was less bad, he'd probably be more good. But he's not.

I noticed there was no discussion of how OSU essentially paying their players in the form of memoarabilia and equipment to sell gave OSU an unfair advantage in recruiting that factored into those 7 victories under Tressel. I'm sure that isn't relevant at all though.

No apology will be forthcoming. Further correspondence shall be directed to the shredder.

Go Blue. See you next November- I hope "Spread And The Slot Ninjas" makes it as a band in Ohio.

We've tried that thing where we say "Hey, don't feel good about beating us, because we really suck."

Note to Ohio guy:  Doesn't work.

The worst part is that I bet he actually believes what he's saying--typical Ohio moron.  We won, you lost and get ready for a decade of Michigan dominance over your sorry cheating pathetic excuse for a football program. We are back!

In spite of him totally trashing his own team (WTF?), Ohio played pretty well.  So well in fact, that they might have won had Pryor and Tressel been on the field.

BUT THEY GOT BOOTED FOR CHEATING.

They're lucky they were even within 14 points. If Braxton Miller hadn't had the greatest passing game of his career to date then they probably would've lost by 20 because we crushed their running game. At least I get the joy of listening to their crying for another ~360 days
