Why do you hate Ohio State?

"Oh how I hate Ohio State"

It's a phrase I often hear tossed around this time of year, nicely summarizing the animosity felt between the two institutions.  We've all know the history...

The battles between Bo and Woody,

the fiercly fought games,

the great victories

and the agonizing defeats.

Along with the long history behind it, The Game often has an intense personal importance for fans.  But why do you hate Ohio State? Is there any instance that you can (Hoke) point to and say "This is the moment where I went from disliking That School in Ohio to hating them"? Or, is it a culmination of years of cheering for Michigan that have built up a steady distaste for that School down south?

For me, my dislike for Ohio elevated itself in 2005, and transformed into emnity in 2006.  I was a sophomore in high school during Michigan's great 2006 campaign.  I had been a big Michigan fan for my whole life, but I was still young and not as invested in the rivalry as I am now.  The hype for the Michigan-Ohio game that year was huge.  I was watching ESPN non-stop for days, absorbing every bit of information on The Game of The Century that I could.  Then, the unthinkable occured.  Bo, the hero of the Maize and Blue faithful and the patron saint of Michigan football, passed away.  It was heartbreaking.  Despite the fact I was too young to have seen a game by him I still looked up to him, he was a man who displayed every quality that (to use a much maligned cliché) a Michigan Man should, and thus he was a personal hero of mine.

The hype surrounding the game along with Bo's death put an immense importance in my mind.  We had to win it.  We had to win it for Bo.  We had to win it because Ohio State had beaten us two years in a row (a streak, which now seems gloomily quaint).  We had to win it to play for the national championship.

Unforetunately, in sports not everything goes your way (even for Michigan fans), and we ended up losing a close game.  I was angry at everything: Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., the turf, the refs, even Shawn Crable.  How could we lose?  This was Michigan! We had such a great season, everything seemed to work in our favor until then.  In school I had to face numerous jeers from my Sparty classmates and looks of gloom from my fellow Wolverines, and I knew why.  Ohio State.  It was their fault.  It was at that time that my dislike for that southern school crystallized into the hate that so many of us feel.  And I began to hate Ohio State.

So here we are, five years later, facing a battered Ohio State team.  Michigan, on the other hand, is resurgant with our best record since that fateful 2006 season.  I cannot help but think gleefully of the great oppertunity that we have to exact revenge on Ohio State.

So as we approach this most anticipated of annual meetings, I wanted to hear the rest of the MGoUsers stories.  Why do you hate Ohio State?  And what does this rivalry mean to you?

[Note:  I know this is long post for a Board, and the mods can move it over to the diaries section if they see fit, but I put it on the board because I wanted to a discussion going, and I thought this would be the best way to start that.]

I grew up in Ohio, the son of a Michigan alumna.  Being cursed at as a child by 40-year-old strangers instilled a deep, burning hatred of that institution and all of the nonsense it stands for. I seethed quietly as the Ohio fight song blared over the PA system of my high school the day before the game. I saw countless "M Go Blow" bumper stickers on cars in parking lots and out on the street. I got middle fingers from total strangers, and have nearly gotten into more than a few accidents when OSU fans deliberately cut me off on the road. Worst of all, they have beaten us 7 years in a row, while the Columbus Dispatch put that goddamn "days since" counter up, as if the streak is going to last forever and as if the two teams play ever day (listen up Dispatch fucknuts--it's been 7 days since we last beat them BECAUSE WE PLAY ONE FUCKING DAY A YEAR).

I hate those bastards. I hate them. They can all go eat shit and die.

-because one of their drunken, imbecilic fans dry humped my wife, pre-game 1997 (only to be driven into the curb face first by A2's finest, cuffed and taken away with blood dripping and teeth missing)

- that, and a bunch of "cool story bro" episodes of which I'm too drunk to relate.

Fuck them.  Go Blue.

Wow. I only hate them because of their arrogant sense of entitlement, their glaring lack of ethics, their blind hate for us, the fact that some stupid fan back in 1986 kicked one of my (female) roommates in Cbus after we beat their ass, the fact that a friend of a friend (both Ohio State fans) sent me a message on Facebook that included a picture of himself with Justin Boren and Justin's dad and asked me, "Do you know who this is?" like he was some kind of trophy, instead of a gutless loser, their cult-like worship of Tressel, even after he proved to be soulless and sociopathic. But I think your reasons for hating Ohio State are far better.

I'll admit it... I'm a complete snob. Elitist, leftist, whatever...

They're a bunch of drunken hillbillies who have no sense of context nor class.  They are a lower form of life.  They are the uneducated and unwashed masses. I look down upon them with only the slightest bit of pity.

Some asshat messaged me on fb qouting "hey fuck head Michigan can't beat any fucking ohio team so fuck off and suck a dick"... I've never met him or have any clue what I did to him. I didn't respond because I don't care. They just show a lack of maturity and a lack of character. I love everything Michigan stands for more importantly. The history of Yost, the legacy Bo, and The Winged Helmet. Michigan is something special and always will be. Nobody will be bigger than Michigan and it willl always be family.

It's F'n Ohio.

It's red.  It's gray.

It's Tressel, the giant toilet bowl, Columbus.

It's Pryor, Boston, Boren, the Olentangy River.

It's The Big 2, Little 8.

It's Bo and  Woody and the 10 year War.

It's the asshats from MSU who had a swing vote for the 1974 Rose Bowl.

It's "because I couldn't go for 3."

It's the missed kick by super toe, and the 2006 game of the century.

It's Clarett, George, Byars, and Griffin.

It's 1969.

It's 1997.

It's Desmond and Charles' punt returns

It's "that school up north" and "Ohio"

It's 2-10-1

It's 7 in a row and 9 of the last 10.

It's The Game.

It's Michigan and Ohio fucking State.

for one reason or another, got fired:  Hayes, Bruce, Cooper, Tressel, Fickel (right, assistant head coach).  They finish disgraced and yet show no shame for it.

It is my God given right to hate them.

My dad was not into sports so I developed my love for Michigan and hate for them on my own. I guess it just feels right.

I hate the script Ohio, I hate the stupid stickers and how every player even the walkons helmet is covered in them, I hate how delusional they are, I hate how they all forgot about John Cooper, I hate that the greatest thing many of them ever accomplish is taking a picture with brutus the buckeye...I hate that they continue to breed simple minded idiots...Got it! Good!

They're ignorant, arrogant, smug pieces of human feces who care more about the win than the class (or lack thereof) displayed whilst playing the game.

Also the way they say "THE Ohio State University" as if it was God's gift to humanity.

1.  Because of they are easily the most arrogant, obnoxious fans I have ever witnessed.

2.  Hearing the "O-H!" chant everywhere.

3.  Their "everybody does it" Tressel alibi.  A friend of mine once said "I don't care what the hell Tress does...he wins football games.  I don't care if the players get in trouble or fail out of college.  I care about being entertained and wins."  To which I replied "I don't even know what to say to you..."

4.  Their Michigan insecuity.  When the Tat-5 originally got suspended last winter, I put the famous "everyone steals..." Pryor quote on facebook as my status.  Rather than calling Pryor a dumbass like they should have, a few of my friends just went into a comment-tirade, ripping on "Detard" because "he can't tie his shoes" and, again, citing their record against Michigan the past decade.

I watched the Bowl Game with a bunch of Ohio fans in 1978 when Woody punched Charlie Bauman, the Clemson linebacker who intercepted an Art Schlitcher pass to basically seal the win for Clemson. The freakin redneck fans in the room applauded Woody and thought he should of hit him again. I was appalled by the coaches behavior and more astonished by their reaction. While I had connections to Michigan before that episode, it sealed the deal for me to never give that fanbase an ounce of credit.

More reasons to hate Ohio....

In my house, if someone does something stupid because they were mad they "pulled a Woody".

If they did something foolish because of a bad habit or a vice we say " Get your act together Schlicter"

If someone says something really stupid (everybody kills everybody") we say "sure whatever you say TP".".

And if someone gets caught telling a bold face lie, we say "don't go Tressel on me"

It gets our point across quite easily.

Because, without exception, every asshole I met in the first 17 years of my life was an Ohio State fan.

That's what happens when you live in Ohio.

1.  The University pretends it has TBDBITL.  Ohio's music department is not one of the best in the Big Ten, let alone the country.  Most of their players are non-music majors and individually sound terrible.

2.  O-H.  'Nuff said.

3.  Jim Tressel brought unimaginable shame and disgrace to every person who lives in this state, and I hope he rots in hell some day with the other deceivers and liars.

4.  In no particular order:  David Boston, Maurice Clarett, Art Schlister, Terrelle Pryor, Eddie George, Luke Fickell, and Jim Tressel again.

5.  The Buckeyes are civic religion in Ohio.  It influences every aspect of life in the state and gets nauseating if you're exposed to it for too long.  I have a dream that some night I will go to sleep and not have any Ohio fans within a 20-mile radius of my dwelling.

6.  Buck I Guy and Big Nut must be stopped by any means necessary, including but not limited to violence.

My hatred for Ohio st comes strictly from my absolute love and passion for Michigan. I grew up in Ann Arbor and lived there until I was 22. I remember the fall mornings from my Old West Side neighborhood. I would wake up early and could smell the crisp fall air. The echo of the marching band warming up at elbel field could be heard in the distance. Even at a young age I knew the importance of 'The Game' and looked forward to the sound of Keith Jackson's voice calling the game on TV. My hatred for ohio st. comes from my love and passion for the University of Michigan.

My first trip to Columbus as an 18 year old freshman was in April 1993. My friends and I went to a bar. Everyone got a stamp on their hand. Those of us not of drinking age were stamped with "Fuck Michigan". It was then that I deemed Columbus to be the armpit of America.

Thought my hatred wouldn't be as bad as I grew older and out of the state but it hasn't. Just looking at them makes my skin crawl.

You can't have a rational conversation with them regarding anything, they thing they are perfect.

I would never consider a $uckeye a friend of mine.

I hate tUoOS because of their inbred, redneck, illiterate, PBR-swilling, yellow-sweaty t-shirt-wearing, spouse-abusing, sheep-sodomizing, fan base.

... and those are just the chicks in columbus.
