Which member(s) of Team 135 will have a breakout year?

Submitted by trueblue262 on

I think we can all agree that there will be atleast 1 player who has his "coming out party" at a game or 2 this fall at the big house. Besides the obvious choice of everybody (Peppers), who would you say is in line to really turn some heads this year?

My choice happens to be on the OL with David Dawson. I think he's going to be a popular name by the end of the season.

Kid is going to amass a ton of punting opportunities and become a phenomenal punter. Think he becomes the new zoltan

You whined last time I called you out on your misery, and yet you have done exactly nothing to dissuade that notion. In fact, all you've done is reinforce it. Even Space Coyote noticed and gave you a light spanking.

Enough already. Sack up and move on.

But you didn't really answer the question. You added your typical whining. Tell me if there's a difference between these two answers to the question at hand: 1. Funchess because he's huge, athletic, and will be the go-to target with Gallon gone. 2. Funchess because we'll always be playing from behind so we'll have to throw it a ton and also Hoke sucks. One of those is a normal response, similar to what everyone else said. The other is a typical 1927 response. I won't tell you which is which.

and at one point I thought we agreed, your rantings are taken as if you're venting on your fellow MGoBloggers.  Even though it isn't intended that way, that's the way its taken.  You almost started constructive in your critcism a few times, but you've regressed.  If you want to have your gyros re-caged, by all means continue on with this line of posting.

but at no point did I attack or vent against my fellow MGoBloggers. I didn't present my opinions as fact, I just answered the question of who I thought would have a break out year, that being Wile as I think were really going struggle due to a bad O-line. No venting, just my prediction

WolvinLA2

July 8th, 2014 at 3:51 PM ^

But those things aren't correlated. You think Wile will be good because our OL will suck. Why will that make Wile good? Just because he has a lot of opportunities? It won't make him any better as a punter than a guy who only punts 3 times a game. You just picked a guy to discuss that would also allow you to rip the team.

nobody but you feels the need to police me and keep me from shoving my opinions on here
You have -201 points while I'm typing this, and most of those negs aren't mine, nor those of WolvinLA2. I think your gloom contributes negatively to the atmosphere of the board. Also, it annoys me. Do I need any other reason?

Differing opinions and thoughts lead to thought-provoking discussions. So while my pessimism might bring down some of the morale of the board I do believe it's healthy

who makes a good portion of his living through written communication, I can tell you that what you're doing is not healthy the way it brings down the morale of the board.  If you weren't so confrontational and negative (without being constructive) you would get more replies and then have a provoking discussion  (Discussion usually includes more than one party).  If that's truly your goal, to have a discussion, you're going about it in the exact opposite way you should be.

It was off-topic, designed to lead a positive discussion in a different and negative direction. It was certain to annoy the other posters and contributed absolutely nothing. Your lame defenses notwithstanding, I am confident that you're quite familiar with what constitutes trolling and this won't be your first (or last) account to be banned for it.

but I really like it.  Remember there were rumblings of him getting PT before the injury last year.  I'm still impressed with his high hurdles accolades.  From his MGoBlue profile:

"... was All-America in 110-meter high hurdles and won two state titles in the event ... won two indoor state titles in 60-meter HH ... was all-state choice ... was anchor on national championship shuttle hurdle team as junior."

I have to go with Chesson. I love how much of an afterthought he seems to be despite showing a good deal of talent on the field.

For a defensive pick, I am going with Taco Charlton.

Kalis should step forward...and Frank Clark should become something like Brandon Graham, pretty please, God, with a strawberry on top! (probably ain't gon' happen...)

Nussmeier.  Assuming he can make progress with the OL, the  offense will show capable improvement over last year.

Cue the sideline TV shots of the confident, visor-wearing reason for our newfound efficency... against the next shot of our hot-seat sitting, gumpy, non-headsetted, underachieving nice guy.  I don't necessarily agree, but we could be hearing that narrative as the running game finds its level and DG reduces INT's.

On defense I'm gonna take Stribling. He was almost always in position to make a play. If he times his jumps better he will be solid. On the O I'm going with Canteen. He's gonna have plenty one-on-one coverage with defenses shading toward Funch.

with limited PT last year and I think he takes a big 300# leap in 2014.  On offense I'm going with Canteen...you can't coach speed.

Maybe I'm missing something but it seemed in the spring game that Justice Hayes has the best vision of our RBs.  I think he's the surprise starter.  You can argue that Beyer's already established and so can't "break out" but I think he'll be 3x as noticable this year as he was last year.

So many names are sticking out to me, but I'll go with:

RB - Justice Hayes, he seriously looked the best in spring practice. Would be nice to have a 2011-Fitz like breakout of 1,000 yards.

OL - Kalis, in particular, the lights turn on him for him this season.

Defense: I hope to God it's whoever starts at safety opposite of Jarrod Wilson. It's nerveracking not having a starting safety in place yet. It'd be even scarier if a true freshman in Peppers had to drop back to safety by default of Thomas, Clark ect. ect. not stepping up.

Said it his senior year, I think he is better than Green and I will stick with that. Smith seems like a puuuuuure runner!

I did forget to mention, although he broke nothing big, he ran with a purpose during the spring game, and at one point I believe I saw him break about 7 tackles and still not go down prior to the official blowing the play dead. This young man wants to play, badly, and there is no better starting point.  Good pick.

He is ridiculously talented + Mattison is building a defense around him = breakout year, even for his high standards

I want to see Ben Braden blow up. Dude should be going donkey on some DEs this season.

On Defense, I'm hoping for an explosion of Dymonte Thomas.

Defense:

Willie Henry is going to be a beast. He almost doesn't qualify since he was pretty good last year, but I think he'll step it up again.

Taco Charlton is just too athletic to keep off the field. After a year to learn system and earn the trust of the coaches, I think he'll see much more time... hopefully a big part of that being a terror in the backfield

Jourdan Lewis likely be a starter in nickel package and has a chance to supplant one of the upperclassmen as a full time corner. I really liked the aggression he showed in the Spring Game in disrupting routes, something that's been missing the last couple years.

Offense:

Patrick Kugler will be a huge key to the OL if he can win the center starting job. That frees up Graham Glasgow to fill in elsewhere on the line. We'll be in a lot better place depth wise and based on what I saw in Spring, I think he's got a good shot at winning the job

Derrick Green finally showed some shimmy to compliment his bowling ball running style. I think an improved line and better conditioning will allow him to take a huge step up. Deveon Smith also looked good in the Spring Game, so I'm hopeful we'll have a two headed monster here.

Freddy Cateen is riding a wave of hype already, and I think he will have a big impact, but my darkhorse out of the WR corp is Amara Darboh. I think he has the size and speed to be a big weapon opposite Funchess. It's a little concerning he was still held out of spring since his foot injury didn't initially sound that serious, but assuming he's healthy, I think he's got a good chance to reclaim the hype he was carrying out of Fall camp last year.

Both have been in the program for two years and have seen a lot of football. They will both get some catches. Need them to make some plays no doubt and they have the speed to get vertical and stretch the defenses. I don't think Canteen is a better option than Darboh at this moment but I have been wrong before. Funchess, Canteen and Darboh lined up are better than any three we had last year simply because the guys are a year older. That usually means alot when time was spent on the field. Chesson is the fourth guy maybe if not in the top three. Gardner is a year older, O-line are all a year older, receivers are all a year older except Canteen. This offense is going to light some people up worse than last year. 11 and 2.

The breakouts though,

Offense:  Darboh, Green

Defense:  Henry, Gedeon, Peppers at free safety by game 5

The guy is good, no doubt. I'm not even sure if they want him at weak side backer but I like to believe mid season it will be Ross, Ryan and Gedeon as the starting three. RJS might jump Ross even. Ross is still tough though. I think after seeing Gedeon in the Ohio game chase down Braxton them couple times was more than Morgan or Bolden has ever done athletically. I suppose his experience and game reps will hold him back though.
