Wherefore art thou, Cox and Toussaint?

Submitted by STW P. Brabbs on

One of my take-aways from the game is that either Cox, Toussaint, and Hopkins must have trouble with the playbook and/or put the ball on the ground in practice for Vincent Smith to feature as prominently as he is.  I like the kid.  He's a good blocker.  He's good out of the backfield.  Seems like a heady player.  I thought he had turned a corner, based on his performance against UConn.

But at this point in his career, I really think he is a below-average running back in terms of carrying the ball.  He's got decent first-step quickness and good vision, but his speed is lacking, and no matter how willing he is to stick his nose between the tackles, the fact remains that he consistently goes down with first contact.  He was arm tackled at least a couple of times against UMass, a team with considerably less size and strength than Big Ten defenses will show.  He is not fast or explosive enough to make linebackers miss in space.  He is not a long-term solution.

Maybe in a couple more years under Barwis, Smith will be ready to make a few plays on his own, but right now on 90% of his touches he gets exactly what the line gives him (at best), and not a yard more.  Please let this be the time that people stop just thinking about his height and let the Mike Hart comparisons die.  I really, really hope that Fitz and Cox can see the field next week, so one way or another I at least can see what we've got with those guys.  Shaw looks like he's stepping up his game, but we still need to find another runner to rotate in with him - preferably one with a bit more power and brawn.

(I'm not even going to fucking try to figure out what can/should be done about the defense.  I think prayer may be the best answer for that situation.)

am i the only one that feels like the love that shaw is gonna get this week is owed almost entirely to the offensive line and the wr's. his two long runs were through gaping holes. i will give him props for breaking that tackle on the second of the long runs. but he still hesitates way too much after getting the handoff. he comes to a complete stop and sits infront of the line of scrimmage. he needs to hit the hole with more speed and more conviction. hes definitely got some talent, and has shown a lot more power than in yrs past. but he is gonna get tackled for a loss very often if he continues that habit.

I don't think credit should be taken away from Shaw - he used his speed and agility effectively in space and broke some tackles, and at least on some plays, knifed up between the tackles effectively.  He looks way, way stronger than he did last year.

But you're right about his dnacing behind the line sometimes - he still does it too much, and it's going to hurt us sooner or later.  I get the feeling that, because Rod's offense is so deadly on the ground, he really hates negative yardage because it constricts our options on the following play.  That must be why Cox hasn't been out there yet (or fumbling.)  Maybe Fitz just wasn't quite 100% for UMass, but I really hope to see those two against BGSU.

I can't wait to see him in action either. I guess the game was too close to try someone untested in game situations, even though it shouldn't have been. Wonder if he can play D

I cannot believe that the game nearly hinged on RR deciding that running Smith on 3rd and 1 was a good idea.  Isn't that where we're supposed to see Hopkins or at least a DRob keeper?  That play call boggled my mind.

game was too close to put in third and 4th string backs, can you imagine the griping on here if they had seen the field and had cost michigan drives.  if the defense can hold a multiple TD lead, then we'll see what they can do in game conditions.

When Juliet says "O Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?," she isn't asking where he is.  She's saying, "Why does your name have to be Romeo " - i.e., why does he have to be a member of the hated Montague family?

Well, I was talking about myself . . . but I'm not the only one who thought that.

His only good game came against DSU last year.  Shaw and Cox are better, and Toussaint probably is, too, although I'm basing that last one on a very small sample of Toussaint sightings.

Maybe the " stable of RBs " is much of a stable but more like a pen? Or maybe we are gonna convert Cox n Fitz to DBs....couldnt hurt?? I still feel that Fitz will be featured next week against another HUGE speed bump BGSU.
