Where would you play?

Submitted by sedieso on

Lets all live hypothetically right now. Say you were the number one recruit like T Pryor was last year or Matt Barkley is this year, and anyone who is anyone in college ftball, but Michigan, has offered you a chance to play for them. Where would you choose to go and why?

I would go to USC for a number of reasons. First since Pete Carrol has been there, he has had 3 heisman trophy winners. Worst case scenario at USC nowadays is that you play in the Rose Bowl. You have all the talent in the world to play with. The weather is nice year round and the women are very very very good looking. Another factor is the Hollywood status you can attain if you achieve greatness there and all the celebrities that come to the games. A close second is Florida because of the offense they run and the atmosphere on game days.

I would choose the place that gives me the best shot at the NFL. In order of importance: depth chart/playing time, surrounded by talent to make you look better (a good O-Line made Emmit Smith), team's national exposure, facilities. But far and above, the depth chart is most important. I bet ten years from now Carlos Brown will be wondering "what if."

Or perhaps Mr. Brown can go out into the workplace armed with Michigan degree with the sky being the limit, or he could've gone to a SEC school and left with a crappy education. Considering very few people make it into the NFL, I'd take my chances with a school with a good football and academic program, like Michigan. USC is a pretty good school too, so that would most kids' top choice (and it is).

Agreed on Carlos Brown, but if I were choosing a school with my M bias aside, I would choose a school with both a good football program and academics. I would probably still get my CS degree and kick some ass in the real world when I didn't get into the NFL.

As a non-athlete with a GS degree, unless you're applying for grad school or have a technical degree (such as the CS mentioned above), noone cares what you majored in. They care a lot more about the institution from which you pulled your degree (whatever it may be). So, yes, UM beats any SEC school, in my biased opinion. So does Stanford, though, too.

It depends on what you go into. I work in sales, I don't think my boss would give 2 shits whether I went to Michigan or Arkansas. It might matter if I went to Central Arkansas Pine Bluff State, but really the SEC schools are pretty solid academically. Not elite, but solid.

First, what U will accept your academic record and where do you have a chance to stay eligible. It is well known that some schools (not mentioning any names to avert flame wars) have less rigorous standards. Second, COACHING, COACHING, COACHING. If you don't progress during college you have no shot at the NFL. All the other stuff, is just stupid!!! Check out the NFL rosters. Lots of starters in every position from very, very, small schools.

completely depends on my position. if i'm a lineman, big ten is pretty hot. if i'm a QB, the big 12 looks great, anywhere. if i'm someone with a hot HS resume that's off the boards, gotta go SEC. but if i'm looking for that big contract out of college...in 3 years...gotta be MICHIGAN.

Have the best towns. I don't think I would like to live in the south very much. I spent a summer in Memphis, and with apologies to southerners, I didn't find the hospitality all that great. I also think places like Norman would seem too out in the middle of nowhere. Have to agree with sedieso that USC would be the best, unless I was a 4 or 3 star recruit. Those guys might never see the field and then maybe I would chose a North Carolina, good academics, up and coming program in a crappy BCS conference.

Ugh... UNC? Really? Based on the rationale you cite, you'd be better off going to the *much* better school 9 miles up the road, that wears a darker shade of blue, has far superior academics, is also an up and coming football program, and is in the same crappy BCS conference. =) (I'm talking about Duke, by the way.)

Texas (Mack Brown is meh though). North Carolina (Beautiful campus, Davis can coach, weak conference, good school). Michigan for obvious reasons. Arizona State (the girls and the weather).

Yeah, right now. He's been known as a chronic underachiever except when he's got that "IT" team. And by it team I mean Vince Young or Colt McCoy passing at 80%+. Better coaches than Mack Brown: Butch Davis Saban Carroll Meyer Stoops Rich Rod Mike Leach Mike Gundy (seriously OSU should not almost beat Texas ever) Arguably as good as Mack Brown: Tressel Richt Tuberville Miles Belotti He's just meh to me.

A good chance for playing time, it's within walking distance of the Bel Air and Chateau Marmont hotels (nuff said) and Rick Neuheisel is "relentlessly positive."

World-class institution, awesome politically charged city/campus, and a good program in a winnable conference. I'd probably make USC/Cal/UCLA fight over me. I couldn't go anywhere in the BIg Ten that wasn't Michigan, I couldn't go anywhere in the SEC because it is the SOUTHEAST, No red state Big 12 schools either [Texas has a shot], and so I inevitably find myself swayed by Pete Carroll's dashing smile and soothing drawl.

Stanford. Best academics in the world. BCS conference. More non-football opportunities for graduates than anywhere other than Harvard or Yale. Of course, I'm a nerd. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I dunno....who's got the best coach at my position? Somewhere where: 1) the position coach and head coach know what they're doing (as long as Jay Paterno is there this rules out Penn State.) 2) the weather is right, and by that I mean I don't like it when it consistently stays 75 degrees past Thanksgiving. October should require jackets and sweatshirts dammit. (Texas being the lone exception. I'd go there. Otherwise, that means pretty much the entire SEC, Florida, and the Southwest is out, including USC, UCLA.) 3) I like the campus (rules out, say, Stanford - not a fan of the Spanish architecture). 4) the fans are not psychotic crazies (bye bye, WVU and Maryland). 5) they don't wear scarlet and gray or maroon and orange. 6) the coaches have a reputation for above-board dealings and I won't end up stuck at a place under probation. 7) it wouldn't require my folks to set aside currently held loyalties, which rules out MSU, aTm, OU, and Arkansas. Although MSU and Arkansas were already eliminated by rule 4. 8) the school and team are properly old-school. No Louisville, no USF, etc. 9) the uniforms are not hideous (eliminating Oregon, among others) 10) it is a BCS school. Honestly - the academics would mean very little to me, though I'd probably pay lip service like any good recruit trained in the art of dealing with the media. If I were THE GUY, I'd be shooting for an NFL career, or a coaching career like Major Applewhite. I don't need a highly ranked business school for that. I just need a degree. This leaves about half the ACC, about two-thirds each of the Big 10 and Big 12, and maybe a third of the Pac-10. Probably no more than 25 schools.

Regarding the original topic... Michigan, hands down!!! Wouldn't think twice about it. But if I *had* to choose another school, my tops would be: - USC - Pete Carroll, SoCal, hot chicks, good school - Texas - Austin's a great town from what I hear, it's a good school, great program w/ tradition, not obnoxious like oklahoma and the SEC. - Texas Tech - I think Mike Leach is the freakin man! He's like an offensive mad scientist. If I was a sleeper QB with upside in college, this is where I'd go. - Duke - Coach Cutcliffe is turning the Devils around!!! Plus, based on my non-biased opinion, it's pretty much the best school ever, academically.

USC/UCLA would be hard to beat. Also AZ State. In the Big 10, Minnesota or Wisconsin. As great as it would be as a fan, I can't imaging playing football in the South, especially since I would be a lineman.

Georgetown. Because it's the greatest school on earth, has one of the longest college fight songs, is in America's safest city, and the Patriot League boasts some of the greatest offenses in the country (Fordham, Lafayette).

If I can't play for Michigan, then, I would choose... 1. LSU: Playing for Lesticles would be lots of fun; plus Cajun food and girls all day long. 2. Stanford: Ironically, another Michigan grad... The stimulating academic environment would be fun also. 3. Texas: Austin is a fun town. Mack Brown seems like the laidback type who won't go too crazy on the two-a-days. Plus, Texas has jobs. Three schools I definitely won't choose: 1. Syracuse: Snowiest city in America. Dreary dome stadium without any crowd support. Plus a lame duck coach who belongs in the NFL. 2. BYU: No offense to my LDS friends, but alcohol and casual sex are essential to a rewarding college experience. 3. Alabama: If Nick Saban gets any tenser during games, his veins would all simultaneously explode... now, imagine all the close door practices.

Thinking as an 18 year-old elite football star, my criteria are as follows, in order: a) The school that maximizes my chances of going pro. b) The school that pays me the most while requiring the least amount of work (getting paid sure hurt Reggie Bush's rep) c) Women d) Weather The slam-dunk? USC.
