When did UMBIG11 become Shawn L Martin?

Submitted by Dillon on

UMBIG11 used to be calm and insightful, now anything he has posted since the season began has been nothing but negative or expressing pessimism on the outlook of the season.

Can we all just leave the hot takes at the door. Teams evolve throughout the season, see PSU in 2016.

Just relax.

Come the fuck on. You think we based our predictions on that from him? It wasn't 99.9% because one of the best defenses in the country last year returned nearly everyone?

I took a look at his last couple posts, and I agree with some people above that he's being fairly reasonable. I think he's a little too negative, but if people don't think 8-4 is a real possibility this year they're deluding themselves. This team has proven nothing yet.

UMbig11 isn't an asset because of his predictions. He's an asset because he's proven himself many times about roster changes, starting lineups, etc. He's not an oracle. The season has started so now he's just another poster.

I think its fair to admit that based off early season results it seems like big ten offenses were/are complete trash which inflated the opinion of big ten defenses. How many wide receivers like Proche are there in the big ten? Only OSU has guys like that and they torched our db's on crossing routes last year too in the second half. Meanwhile every big 12 and sec team has guys like that.

Our defense is still good, but it isn't nationally elite like playing a row of shit big ten offenses implies.

I lost count how many pick plays they ran to separate Proche from a CB, it was the only way to get the guy open.  It was tough to watch the film and let those plays go uncalled OPI but then call us on DPI for some pretty standard man-to-man defense.  Just thought the refs were from a different planet.  That crew called a strange game.

Like in b-ball, sometimes a crew comes into a game with a set philosophy ... "we are going to call a tight game as those Michigan CB look grabby on film".  Shit can happen like that from an out of conference crew that is used to watching spread teams play into zone coverage.

He is ultimately a fan also. He is disappointed. Who isn't. Have you seen some of Brian's comments over the years? I appreciate what UMBIG11 and Brian do for us and I am good with their opinions. They have a right. Winning cures all and I Don't expect UMBIG11 to be my therapist.

I wish you would have just emailed him. He seems like a nice person who would respond. While you have the right, I feel like you are getting on his case in a public forum. But you have the right....

The preseason hype looks like mostly bullshit. The team feels like last year's team with a real QB and a worse defense. The Playcalling is still terrible. Harbaugh seems incredibly inflexible. The team starts every game flat. Still can't win the big game.

Why wouldn't he be pessimistic?

The team being flat is the biggest concern. These guys work their asses off all off-season and during the week to play the game and have fun. The game is the fun part. Not being excited about that part is hard to understand. But when you look at Harbaugh's personality change last year, it seems like they're taking on the personality of the coach. It's too business like, too much like the NFL.

I think he is correct.... This is a very mediocre team. Every year, for the past ten years  we are over hyped. I'm sick of it. Just WIN. Stop thinking because we are Michigan we will automatically beat any and everyone all the time. There is so much that goes into it. UMBIG11 is not being a homer. He's being a realist. Why cant some of you see this? We cant possibly be considered an elite program anymore...No recent NC, B1G championship, no beating of our rivals....Losing to teams we have better talent than....I could go on. I hate that we are not the Michigan I grew up watching. Its just not the same program. I love Michigan football more than anything and any other sport. I also know when we are just not as good as some media or folks on here think. Like many people I get excited every year for the season to begin....But lately, like the Lions, I come away disappointed and angry from  the outcome of the season. I seriously think we will finish this season with three loses....I blame most of this on Harbaugh. The team looks unprepared at times..No discipline at times, questionable play calling and clock management. All program success starts and ends with the head coach. Im not saying fire him by no means......He just needs to evolve with what he has. I guess like many of you, by year 4, I was expecting more. I just hope I'm wrong.

The program has averaged 8.6 wins/season since 1990...

Harbaugh could go 8-5 again and average 9 in his first 4 seasons.

9-3, 10-3 is still in our grasp.

You are in control of your own expectations.

People said all off season, Michigan is probably going to be a better team, but it might not show in the record.

Harbaugh has reset the program back to it's roots. 8-10 wins with  infuriating losses mixed in with losing the big game with everything on the line. That is a tradition dating back to the early 70s when Bo set the standard. Be happy with 8-5 or better, because as we have seen it can be so much worse. Our offense is competent. Our defense is competent. A foundation has been laid that in any year we could be 2006/2016, and any year can be 2005/2017.

Bo was 5-4-1 against Woody, IIRC. He also owned MSU and won his share against ND. He couldn’t win the Rose Bowl (except once or twice) but at least he got there.

I would like to see a comparison between the number of penalties per game under Bo versus under Harbaugh. Harbaugh’s teams appear to lack the discipline that Bo’s teams had. One of Bo’s credos was don’t beat yourself.

Bo would always lose a big game, like '85 against IA or '86 at home against MN. He would always struggle in bowl games.  I think Harbaugh will turn this team around it will just take a bit more time to build the required depth.  But I can see the D is almost in reload mode, we have a line of good QBs. Eventually the OT will be solved.

Your post is accurate but lacks important details....

In the 90s we had 5 B1G Championships

We beat OSU 7 times, Beat MSU 6 times. Beat ND 4 times with 1 tie

3 Rose Bowl wins. Since then we have 0.

Since 2000 3 wins vs OSU, 9 wins vs MSU (2 in ten years)

1990's 6 Bowl wins (10 years). 2000's 5 Bowl wins (17 years)

This downslide is not expectable. I'm not Happy with 8 wins. Especially when we have one of the highest paid coaches in the nation.

Shit post from a shit poster posting shit?

Several calls for a link to whatever bombast moment led to this thread, and yet there's nothing.  I do recall one comment that was unpleasant to read after the ND game, but have seen nothing from him since.  Please elaborate...

@Mods - delete this. entire threads targeting individual users should be killed with reckless abandon.

umbig11 is insightful, or at least offers good info to the board sometimes.

my take on their recent posts is that they are fully acknowledging the change in offensive coordination to JH and are not thrilled with 1. the results so far, 2. the creativity or design of the scheme to win, 3. the progress of the team vs. the amount of preparation to date

umbig11 is allowed an opinion.  i tend to agree - there are year-round analysts and opportunities to make gameplans, you know your strengths and weaknesses well in advance and so this idea of "the team should improve throughout the season" is a little bit garbage.  i mean, of course they should improve through the season, but we should also be prepared for what ND or SMU will bring at us well before the season starts.  A mobile QB shouldn't throw us for a loop, if Higdon can't start, we should have a backup plan that doesn't depend on Evans to be Higdon.  If Mayfield and Hudson are on their way to starting OL jobs, they should have been there by the time spring practice and fall camp are complete, not 4 games into the season.

Seems like Michigan is surprised by too many things that happen and has to be adjusting and "improving" all the time vs. rolling out of the gate on day 1 ready to go - like some of the elite teams seem to.

I will say that he seemed to be taking shots at Harbaugh which is certainly different. The comment about the three factions was very odd.

There were a few...

"Our offense is lifeless, pedestrian, mediocre, antique, boring, unimaginitive, and predictable. If I were a DC, I would be drinking a case of beer, not a 12 pack when facing Harbaugh. On Saturday, a Michigan WR might catch the first touchdown pass in a year! App St had a few in one game on the road in Happey Valley on Saturday."

From this thread...https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/gerdeman-michigan-monday-week-1#comment-243057263

And from a deleted thread speculating that Harbaugh was on the hot seat.

"There are some cracks starting to form among three factions. So, just the fact that a statement was made means they are addressing this one."

I'm sorry, but if you don't feel this way then I don't believe you're an emotionally invested fan. This program has pushed the fan base to the place it currently sits. Where we can't even be happy with a 45-20 win because the flaws persist and continue to be so obvious. Where some boo in the home opener. The Notre Dame game was an utter embarrassment and any confidence we had in this coach being among the elites in the sport have been crushed. Urban Meyer walked into OSU with a .500 team and went undefeated. That's elite. Notre Dame almost lost it's next two games.

Every year we reset our minds and try to be hopeful that it's finally going to turn around. Bring in a few new coaches and a recruiting class of talent. They're still incapable of going on the road and upsetting a team. They're incapable of actually overachieving for once. It's maddening and soul crushing. I can see how someone like UMBig can get pessimistic. He's human and this program continues to give us very little to be optimistic about.

Blue In NC

The problem is that this is often the reality of college football.  Yes, we have played sloppy so far.  OSU has been clicking but Wisky, MSU, Penn State and others have played just as bad or worse and they were ranked just as highly.  Auburn lost at home.  FSU is beyond terrible.  Miami has been very bad.  UCLA and USC even worse.

Yes, losing to ND on the road was bad but not shocking and yet we are acting like the season is a disaster so far.  It's not.  I am slightly disappointed, yes.  It's unlikely but this team could recover to be quite good.  For once we have the QB to do it.  OL needs to solidify, we need some added depth from younger players and the D needs to step up just a bit more.  IF that happens, we may be in decent shape.  And it may not happen which will result in a very mediocre season.  But we are not there yet.

Umbig is a good dude.  I'm thinking you may not be by making a post like this.

You should probably apologize to him in at least as public a fashion as you made this poorly thought out post.

This is ridiculous, no one needs to apologize.

UMbig11 hasn't posted any tidbits since he claimed Hughes was likely transferring almost a month ago (which was wrong). Everything since has been straight feelingsball. I don't think he's plugged into the program anymore and his feuding with MK was lame as shit.
