When character assassination knows no bounds

Submitted by iawolve on

I understand that opinions are like a**holes and that everyone has one. However, I typically expect that the person holding such opinion would have the slightest exposure to the subject of their opinion. You can imagine my surprise when I read an article from Jennifer Floyd Engel from the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, which sits along side the Dallas Morning News as the two major newspapers in the Dallas Metroplex area. Jennifer is a Mizzou grad who started covering the Dallas Stars and has branched out into other areas for the paper and sports radio. Having previously spent 12 years in the Dallas area, my opinion of her has already been formed, but this part of her unhinged Big 12 rant even surprised me.

"However, whatever, just beat them. Send Nebraska to the Big Ten, or whatever name E. Gordon Gee decides to slap upon that league, with a big fat reminder that their Big 12 legacy was never all that impressive and they will barely be missed at all.

Remind Nebraska why it was never the bellwether team of this conference and why it will not be in the Big Ten. Show the Huskers what Wisconsin and Ohio State and possibly Michigan (if Jim Harbaugh replaces that slimy little RichRod) will do to them."

Apologies for not knowing how to put the above in a nice box. Pretty strong words for someone at a major newspaper who has no horse in the race in regards to Michigan and I strongly doubt has ever met RR. Slimy? F*ck off random sports writer in Texas. This is ridiculous. At least teenage recruits don't read newspapers anymore.  Feel free to spam jenfloyd@ star-telegram.com or call 817-390-7697, your choice.

I, for one, like these kinds of posts for several reasons.  Will I take the time to email this reporter?  No.  Would I like to take the time?  Yes.

By your line of reasoning, if we shouldn't care about what a reporter says/writes, why should we care about any poster on this Board says (except the obvious reputable characters)?

I think the author of this post is justified - if they cannot post this here then where? There is very limited accountability these days by the media, extenuated by "opinion" articles and social mediums like Twitter.  If we do not keep the media honest then who will?  Granted, if I were to write the journalist I would keep my response more measured and allow her to realize how much better Michigan is than wherever she comes from...

Mizzou has contributed way more to the Big 12 than Nebraska has. She should have taken a couple of history courses or at least googled Nebraska. I guess that means she would have to do a little research.

In my E-opinion, she is trying to crack into lead journalist at the Freep Creep HQ.

I detested the Rodrigues reference. But frankly, I am more offended by the treatment of Nebraska. Yes I traded smack with some of their fans on-line in January 1998. However, I have always admired their program, particularly their fans who are (by all accounts I have heard and experienced) the antithesis of OSU fans.

Maybe Sharp can get a job in Texas. I'm sure they would make an outstanding team.

Yes Rich Rod is a Slimy A-hole (/s), as proven by all the time he spends at the Mott's Childrens hospital and his total lack of a win at all costs mentality.

Jennifer,

I would absolutely like to have some respect for your ability as an articulate writer, since I would hope that is what you majored in at whatever university it is that you attended. I regret to inform you however, that I cannot. In a recent article you conjured up what you thought would be, I don’t know provocative, maybe, to say that Nebraska never had much of a Big 12 legacy. I was never under the impression that winning 3 National Championships over a 4 year span doesn’t put you as the “bellwether” of your conference. Granted they had gone through some tumultuous times until recently but it seems as though your love of everything Texas has clearly tainted your views.

Do I think Nebraska is going to come in and dominate the Big 10, I hope, as Michigan fan, that they do not. Before I continue I would like to inform you, that Jim Delaney is the conference president not E. Gordon Gee, so whatever reference that was, kindly take it back. Correct me if I am wrong, but have you ever in your life interacted with Rich Rodriguez? Have you ever had a conversation with him to state that he is somehow slimy? It truly shows great character in you to attack someone you know nothing about. I truly enjoy watching uninformed writers make completely asinine comments in regards to things that they have no factual evidence to defend and I am truly glad you have found your niche. Please continue to do so, it seems to be your calling card. The woman who knows nothing but just likes to rant and tries to be one of the boys… Have a fantastic day!

Sincerely,

Spencer Duits

Jennifer Floyd Engel is a Baby Mama now, but the Little Ball of Hate still comes out to play when necessary...

Sports opinions? She’s never short of them. And love her or Hate her, she’ll be just another one of the boys.
So her whole shtick is just ranting and that makes her one of the boys?  How about stating a fact once in a while or at least backup your claims with some type of evidence.  Hell, make up something...

I know it sounds horrible to hear Rich Rodriguez referred to as "slimy" around these parts, BUT...

...it's not difficult to see why outsiders might see him that way.  There have been a lot of rumors about his personal life which might make people view him in a negative light, but aside from rumors...

...he promised WVU that he would be there for life, and then he ditched them for a better job.  And then at his new job, his program was hit with NCAA sanctions.

I don't really have a problem with somebody out there calling him slimy.  It's kind of true.  I think he's done a lot of good things at Michigan, raised the team GPA, brought in hardworking kids, worked with Mott Children's Hospital, adopted Brock Mealer, etc.  But I'm sure Nick Saban and George O'Leary and Mike Price have all done great things, too, and I wouldn't bat an eyelash if someone called them slimy, too.

I just read subject column, the "open letter to Bob Stoops."  It's horrible.  It's almost indecipherable.  It is some remarkably crappy writing; a real stinker of a column.

And no, columnists don't get to call people "slimy" with no basis.  Actually, they can.  They can write whatever they want.  And then be held accountable for it.

stop digging.

"Saban" hasn't been sanctioned by the NCAA?

"Rodriguez" hasn't been sanctioned by the NCAA.

It is really distressing to me, to see you, of all people, writing such bullshit.  If your equation that Rich Rodriguez can validly be labeled as "slimy" based on Stretchgate, I wonder where you've been for the last two years.

Section 1

For Items 1 through 4 of the Notice of Allegations.  None of which named Rich Rodriguez.  They were issues for Compliance Services, for Alex Herron, for the graduate assistant definitions.

On Item 5, which went to Rich Rodriguez's alleged "failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance," Rodriguez denied it.  The Univesity, which 'pled guilty' to everything else, denied it.  The NCAA investigated, and afterward, changed its mind and decided to withdraw that allegation.  It substituted a "failure to supervise" allegation that was not specific to Rodriguez.

Is this how you come to support "SLIMY"?

For such a well-informed football guy, you seem to know almost nothing about this.
