Whci call was worse: hoops or hockey

Submitted by BlueDog on
so which ending was worse: Evan Turner running halfway up court and getting the shot off in 2 secs or the ref mistakenly blowing a whistle and costing us the winning goal? NO WAY Turner got his shot off in 2 seconds....the clock didnt start on time, IMO. The mistaken whistle? why couldnt replay refs see the whistle happened a split second before the goal, but did not effect play.....and was a mistake to begin with. YUCK

That basketball play happens all the time. I actually don't even think there is a beef there. I mean human reaction time is .5 sec or so, I mean thats just how it is. This was actually a shitty shitty call. EDIT: also there was a lot more at stake in the hockey game.

I'm not sure which whistle you're talking about, the early one on the 3rd Michigan goal, or the late one on the second Miami goal. Basically the refs felt that the play was over whenever the shot left the stick of a Michigan player or was within 2 feet of the Miami goalie. But if the puck was under the Michigan goalie... still live. Clearly the refs were awful in that game. On the other hand, Michigan played with class and a lot of heart and they made me proud to be a Michigan wolverine.

Hockey worse because of the stakes and the fact that is was blatant error. The basketball you could accept as the natural reaction time of the timekeeper - there will always be a split second (literally in this case) between seeing the ball make contact and hitting the switch. The hockey call was inexcusable.

Couldn't agree more. I was a lot angrier with the Sims call than the Turner one. At the end of many basketball games players end up making full-court plays with ridiculously small amounts of time left, particularly in very close contests. I see that all the time. However, the jersey pull was a lot more blatant, and while there wasn't as much at stake (if you believe that Michigan could've possibly won the Big Ten tourney after beating OSU) I also wouldnt mind a stop to those ridiculous emails from MSU fans about not beating MSU football/basketball in 2 years. Actually, speaking of which... since when is a 2 game winning streak in football worth bragging about?

Between those two, hockey was a bigger dong punch. But at least these last few weeks have made 2009-10 hockey a season to remember (at least for Hunwick's sake), where as I would like to pretend that the basketball team took a long long vacation and never made it to the court.

I think its in this order... 1. Hockey for obvious reason that frozen 4 was on the line and it was blatantly terrible. The fact that it was only last night probably helps vault this though. 2. Basketball because it was Ohio State 3. Spartan Bob

Hockey was a game that was so much more important than bball. We were so much more invested in hockey, if bball won it wouldve been a nice surprise, but the basketball wasn't as much of a dong punch as this was.

If a ref is going to make big mistakes, at least miss in the direction of letting the players play. That early whistle took the game out of the hands of the players on the ice. What bothers me is the goalie was clearly trying to find the puck. You would think that is a solid indicator that maybe he doesn't have it covered.

That was one of the worst blown calls I've ever seen. I agree with above that the held jersey was worse than Turner's 3. Living here I've heard PSU fans cry about the clock since we beat them at the end of the game. Unfortunately, the complaints by M fans sound just like the PSU fans. We're better than that. With the hockey call, the ref directly cost us the game. With the grab, it was a player that beat us with only the help of a ref.

Then you might have had a bit more even response. But bad call wise? Hockey, by far. Because of the inconsistency of the two calls. If it's just the one call, it's bad, but not deadly bad. Put the two together? Unforgivable. I think the basketball clock was a little slow, but certainly within human error.
