What Is Your Favorite Michigan Marching Band Song (not including The Victors)?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Of at least some relevance to football is our glorious marching band.  On the way home I was hunting for music and played 'Hawaiian War Chant' at a rather loud level - always good when driving an old diesel truck.    I submit that is probably my favorite MMB song outside of the obvious choice of 'The Victors'.

So what is your favorite song you like to hear the band play on Saturdays at the Big House?

Temptation is one of my favorites. I'm talking about the song they play prior to 3rd down to get the crowd excited or whatever. The song isn't that great and the band and students arent really on the same page with it. I don't know what it's called so i can't really explain it past that.

...but one performance - if I can frame it like this rather than a song per se - that always stood out to me is the tribute to Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland that was part of halftime for the Michigan-ND game in 1991. Of course, more people may remember that one for Desmond's catch - it was a muscially and aesthetically pleasant game overall.

Is it just me or does anyone else think HTTV gets played too much at home games? IMO it should only be played before the game, and after turnovers and touchdowns. Sometimes it gets played during a dead period in the middle of a TV timeout and it's kinda anti-climactic. Anyways, Varsity is my #1

The Blues Brothers (in the cake formation, obviously), followed very closely by the combination of Temptation and the Hawaiin War Chant.

Varsity! Down the field!

Never yield, raise high your shield!

March onto victory for MEEECHEEEGAN!

And-the-maize-and-blue-oh

Varsity! We're for you!

Here for you to cheer for you!

We have no fear for you,

OH VAAARSIIIITYYYY!

I sing that proudly before every game and am usually the only person in my section that knows the words.

For you M history buffs- where did Michigan get its current arrangement of Temptation? I realize it is a 1930's Bing Crosby song but I'm wondering how they started playing it and who wrote their version? I don't know the answer I'm truly curious.

It was used as part of a halftime show back in the 1950s. The arrangement was/is by Jerry Bilik. Jerry was a music student in the early 50s. He composed "M Fanfare," and arranged "Temptation" and "Hawaiian War Chant." 'Hawaiian War Chant" was another percussion feature from a subsequent halftime show. The MMB began performing them together as encores in the early 1960s.
