What problems can be fixed and how?

Submitted by MichiganSports on

After a game like last night its easy to complain and bitch and point out what went wrong, but pointing out the solution is another thing entirely. It took me a while to calm down but now that i took time away and went over the footage again (which was painful) i noticed some things i did not really think of in the moment or was too mad to stop and think and others that were obvious.

1. The Refs/Camera crew were extremely biased. More plays should have been reviewed and were not and the camera crew actually purposefully skipped the replay entirely or did not zoom in on the angle for better view. All these were in favor of ND.

2. ND was extremely lucky on a couple of plays that could have shifted momentum, specifically the muffed punt return that was recovered.

3. Our O-line wasn't as bad as it may have looked. From what i can tell they have definitely progressed as run blockers and regressed a little in pass protection.

4. The RB's either have below average vision or are being coached up and told to go always with the planned gap.

5. ND's D-line is legit and deserved the game ball.

6. Jake Ryan is being wasted at MLB it negates his abilities and Frank Clark is just average.

7. Our WR's are legit but do not get the ball, which leads to the final point.

8. DG has not progressed much. He still doesn't throw the ball away when he should and worst of all he doesn't progress in his reads or recognize the hot route pre-snap.

Obviously 1 and 2 cannot be fixed but i thought they were worth pointing out in partly explaining the lopsided results and the perfect storm that it really was last night. The rest i do not know what to think.  We definitely have more talent this year but I am not sure its all being utilized correctly or being coached up the way it should be. I think Hoke has to win at least 9 games this year and either MSU or OU have to be in that 9, i hope he pulls it off and proves us wrong.  Sorry for the length and formatting this is my first thread and i just had to get this off my chest.

This. Through about 37 minutes of football, I'd say Devin Gardner, slow pace and playcalling were the main problems with our offense. After that, all bets were off and everything fell apart.

Edit: And I'd say playcalling was probably third on the list.

The one that has the theoretical best chance of being fixed but won't be becauase our CB coach isn't a fucking corner or someone with secondary experience is for the corners to actually stress the WRs at the line when playing press.  If you're at the line of scrimmage but just trying to run with the receivers, then slant and go routes will murder you all day.  Which was a bit of a problem, obviously.

Also maybe identifying and blocking Sheldon Day would have maybe been a good idea.  The moment I gave up on the coaching staff was the back to back plays he was simply unblocked and came in on Gardner free.

until the first bye week after Penn State.

A horrible game but it's still too early in a new O and D scheme to completely panic and change things up.The only thing I would change is to get Shane more snaps - I think getting at least a quarter's worth of playing time over the next 4 games would be ideal.

During the bye, if it's clear that we won't have a shot at winning the division I would want to start prepping for 2015 and start Shane over Devin vs. trying to eek out a few wins over the rest of this year.

My comment was definitely more snarky than it needed to be. The PIs were ticky/tack but not completely ridiculous given the way games are officiated today, the out of bounds 3rd down play was total bs, but even without those calls, ND still kicks our ass. Hoke failed to get the team prepared for yet another rivalry game on the road and all the help from the refs in the world wouldn't have mattered.

I thought both PI calls on Lewis were questionable--especially the second one in the end zone. The reviewed play where the ND receiver had his toe on the line was ridiculous, though that play didn't really have much of an effect.  Similarly, I thought Gardner's arm was clearly moving forward on the play that was ruled a fumble, and should have been ruled an incomplete pass on review.  I also thought the roughing all on Ryan was ticky-tack, but probably correct.

I can't think of a single close call that didn't go ND's way.

I don't think anybody is seriously arguing that the officiating was the difference, but that if we are looking for reasons why the final score was 31-0 instead of something a little more palatable, I think this warrants consideration.

RB is about vision and instinct.  This is the reason I wanted Ty Isaac to get his waiver instead of worrying about separating the three a year.  IMO, Issaac is the best of the three as he can do it all.  Green doesn't seem to run like a power back despite his size and doesn't have the greatest vision.  Smith has better vision and runs mad but is slow.  Neither is all that instinctual.  Isaac can run with power, has breakaway speed, and can catch the ball.

that the coaches were probably right about initially moving Gardner to WR.  Great kid, but the improvement just isn't there.  I'd be much more willing to go through growing pains with a Morris

For people wondering why we played soft zone last year, I think this game showed why. We didn't really have the personnel and this year the guys that now can are still few. Countess and Hollowell just couldn't do it. I know it's hard to back off "we're going to be aggressive" After you talked about it all of season, but until we get Taylor and Peppers back, it needs to be at least an option, depending on QB and WR talent of our opponents.

Our receiving corp frankly looked bad. Funchess had size but isn't particularly fast. Ditto for darboh, but to a worse extent. Chesson is fast but change of direction isn't great. We had a lot of plays last night where the ND corners were coming out of the breaks faster than our guys which made Gardner hold the ball too long. Whatever is keeping Canteen off the field needs to be resolved because we desparately need a quick guy that can get open early as a safety valve for Gardner.

I thought OL looked ok early but regressed to bad habits in the second half. Seemed like fatigue crept in and ruined their concentration. Miller looked like a different player first half to second half especially. If Kalis is healthy I'd like to see Glasgow slide to center. Overall, it seems like they focused to much on learning scheme at the expense of fundamentals. Developing those habit into muscle memory will help late in games when guys get tired.

The only coaching change I'd like to see at this point is Funk. I don't know if he's the problem but at this point it doesn't really matter. He coaches the position group that's been this teams biggest weakness for far too long.

I agree. Hoke calls De'Veon Smith the toughest player on the team when he could be the only tough player on the team. Jake Ryan as an outside linebacker was disruptive, but I'm not sure that even he's very tough. This team, except for Smith and maybe Mone and Chesson (to block the way he blocks as a wide receiver, he has to be tough), is not tough.

Jake Ryan has regressed.  Blake Countess has regressed.  I have no idea what to do with Blake - he just has not improved from that standout freshman year.  As for Jake Ryan I refuse to believe this man who was f***** incredible 2 years ago can be this much of a non factor now.  I'd move him to OLB immediately and since Morgan is hurt take my chances with Gedeon at MLB.  I am not a football coach but this is our ONE playmaker on the defense and he looks lost.  He lives off aggression - he seems to now be thinking and reading... rather than reacting.  Put him in a position where all he does is react so we can get 2012 Jake Ryan back. Plz.

He said Jack Miller did some nice things in there. You are a liar. And Jack Miller did, in fact, do some nice things in there. He was our best lineman last night. That doesn't mean he had a good game, but the left side of our line was totally broken.

Jake Ryan looks hesitant and unsure because the Viking's been taken out of him by the move to the middle. If you take a man who eats with his hands and sit him at a table with a spoon and a bowl of soup and tell him not to suck the soup from the bowl, he'll be as confused as a motherfucker. Put that beast back in the position where he was a beast and shit'll start happening again. Take away the silverware and let that man eat!

What they have in common is that they both tore their ACL's and they have both lost some of their athleticism. The coaches moved Ryan to the middle because he can't move quite as quickly as he did in the past. Same with Countess. They want him at nickel because at corner his loss of quickness doesn't get exposed. Both are experienced quality players but not the same guys of two years ago because of injuries.

Number 3. The o-line did better with run blocking than last year, true enough, but they still can't control the line of scrimmage as much as they block to a stalemate against decent d-linemen. I didn't think they were horrible against a normal pass rush, either, at least compared to last year. They struggled when Notre Dame sent all the dogs at once, and their defensive coordinator understood that about our o-line. That's why they kept overloading on the blitzes. We have one lineman who's "strong enough for a man, but pH balanced for a woman," and that's Miller. He's in there because he excels at identifying targets, but that's the end of his excellence. He can't block. God, he tries, but he just can't do it, and Hoke keeps sending him out there to get hit in the mouth. Move Glasgow back to center, bring in Kalis, and let Miller bulk up some more. I don't know what else will help...

If they win ten games, then okay, but until they get those ten wins, I can't see it. Has Golson really transformed into Troy Smith in a year? His wide receivers ain't Tate and Floyd. His running backs ain't that good. Their defense was missing starters and these fuckers still beat Michigan worse than they beat fucking Rice? It's more about Michigan than it is about them. Lou Holtz is on ESPN laughing about how he told everybody that Michigan just isn't a good football team.

I have a hard time judging all the other coaches when the head coach believes that he can simply hire on assistants and then act unengaged and uninspiring on the sidelines. We need a head coach that is more than simply about coaching the defensive line and then treating the rest of his staff like some kind of leadership team where everyone has autonomy to do what they will. In the end, assistant and position coaches are certainly indispensible to a football team but they work for someone who, if it's a good coach, pulls them together into a cohesive unit, analyzes how the offense and defense are working together and makes changes accordingly, on a regular basis. That coach is also able to intervene when needed but more importantly that coach will understand every aspect of the game in a practical sense and mold the team over time.

The worst indicator of how bad things are is player development. As has been said elsewhere, I would imagine that any number of coaches would love to have the roster that Michigan has. The folks that I feel the worst for are the players in all of this.

This is the concern I have.

I was not a fan of the Hoke hire at the outset, but he impressed me with his strong recruiting and by bringing in Mattison.  I thought Borges was better than most people gave him credit for, and when Nussmeier was hired this off season I started to think, "okay, this can work--Hoke just acts like the face of the team and does his bit about being a family and toughness and whatnot, while we have ace coordinators who handle the Xs & Os."

One game is not enough to persuade me that the model is doomed to failure--though if one game could do that, last night's is a damn good candidate.
