What I learned from Draftageddon...sigh...or O how I hate Ohio State!

Submitted by trueblueintexas on

I know Draftageddon is not really appreciated by all readers.  I believe the primary purpose is to give an overview of conference opponents (players) and how things should shake out.

Yes, I'm trying to get something out of this series other than some good snark and depression.

Based on this, here is some quick analysis of how the Big Ten should look this year. (Yes, yes, yes, OSU & MSU blah blah blah....)

***There were 104 total selections. Here is the breakdown by school:

Total
EAST 72
OSU 19
MSU 15
Michigan 17
PSU 10
Indiana 2
Rutgers 4
Maryland 5

WEST 32
Wisconsin 9
Illinois 4
Minnesota 4
Iowa 5
Nebraska 6
Purdue 2
Northwestern 2

Analysis: I guess you have to expect a Michigan blog to be written by a bunch of homers. According to our guys - Woo Hoo!!! we will finish second in the East and be better than any West team by a large margin.

Once you get past OSU, Mich, MSU, PSU and Wisc, man does the conference suck!

***Another way to look at this is who has the top end talent. Next look is at people drafted in the first 10 rounds.

Top 10 rounds
EAST 33
OSU 14
MSU 4
Michigan 4
PSU 6
Indiana 1
Rutgers 3
Maryland 1

WEST 7
Wisconsin 3
Illinois 0
Minnesota 1
Iowa 1
Nebraska 2
Purdue 0
Northwestern 0

Analysis: It's not getting better for the west. OSU...sigh. MSU suddenly does not look as bad. A couple high end contributors, but a bunch of other pieces. PSU still looks okay. Illinois, Purdue, NW...ouch!

***So how will the Big Ten 1st & 2nd All-Conference teams look? Based on draft order, this is what the 1st and 2nd All-Conference teams would look like:

First Team
QB JT Barrett  OSU
RB Ezekiel Elliot OSU
RB Corey Clement Wisc
WR Michael Thomas OSU
WR Jordan Westercamp Neb
TE Jake Butt Mich
OT Taylor Decker OSU
OT Jack Conklin MSU
OG Pat Elflein OSU
OG Brian Allen MSU
C Jack Allen MSU

DE Joey Bosa OSU
DE Shilique Calhoun MSU
DT Adolphus Washington OSU
DT Maliek Collins Neb
LB Darron Lee OSU
LB Mike Caputo Wisc
LB Raekwon McMillian OSU
CB Eric Murray Minn
CB Jourdan Lewis Mich
S Jabrill Peppers Mich
S Vonn Bell OSU

P Brad Craddock Mary
K Brad Craddock

Second Team
QB Connor Cook MSU
RB Justin Jackson NW
RB Josh Ferguson Ill
WR Leonte Carroo Rut
WR Daesean Hamilton PSU
TE Nick Vanneett OSU
OT Jason Spriggs Ind
OT Tyler Marz Wisc
OG Dan Feeney Ind
OG Billy Price OSU
C Dan Voltz Wisc

DE Anthony Zettle PSU
DE Darius Hamilton Rut
DT Austin Johnson PSU
DT Willie Henry Mich
LB Nyeem Wartman-White PSU
LB Steve Longa Rut
LB Vince Biegel Wisc
CB Will Likely Mary
CB Eli Apple OSU
S Jordan Lucas PSU
S Tyus Powell OSU

P Blake O'Niel Mich
K Rafael Gaglianone Wisc

Analysis: Welp...Olines for OSU and MSU are a little scary. Wisc may not have Lake Michigan sized holes for their backs to run through this year. Indiana may be able to run to one side of their line. On defense PSU could be hard to run against. MSU's secondary will probably need to clutch and hold more than ever because the top end talent does not seem to be there this year. Wisconsin has a couple linebackers but they will probably be eating O-lineman this year because they have nothing in front of them. Are there really only 7 teams represented on the first team? 6 if you take away the kicker/punter. The talent is getting pretty thin at the bottom of the conference.

***One final look is to see who has strength in the trenches vs who has the skill players. Skill players typically can not do much without people in the trenches helping.

Trenches   Skill
OL, TE, FB, DL, LB   RB, QB, WR, DB
EAST     EAST
OSU 9   OSU 9
MSU 10   MSU 5
Michigan 9   Michigan 7
PSU 5   PSU 4
Indiana 2   Indiana 0
Rutgers 3   Rutgers 1
Maryland 1   Maryland 3

WEST     WEST
Wisconsin 6   Wisconsin 2
Illinois 1   Illinois 3
Minnesota 1   Minnesota 2
Iowa 3   Iowa 2
Nebraska 3   Nebraska 3
Purdue 1   Purdue 0
Northwestern 1   Northwestern 1

Analysis: Yes, yes OSU has everything. MSU...crap, they have the big uglies to help their skill people. Michigan - Hooray for Homers! Looks like PSU will struggle again on Oline as all 5 trenchers are on D. Everyone else...well, I hear there are some nice rivalry trophies to play for.

***Oh yes, Specialists. Nothing really to see here.

Specialists
P, K
EAST
OSU 1
MSU 0
Michigan 1
PSU 1
Indiana 0
Rutgers 0
Maryland 1

WEST
Wisconsin 1
Illinois 0
Minnesota 1
Iowa 0
Nebraska 0
Purdue 1
Northwestern 0

I hope this helps turn Draftageddon into something a little more helpful for some of the readers.

Ain't no use in complainin'
When you've got a job to do
Spent my days down in the submarine
And that's a loud Go Blue, yeah

Standin' by the Big House torch
They said that the Bucks lost never
Oh, but when we heard the band
24-12 would last forever
That was the best day of my life

Oh, yeah.

As evidenced by UM having the second most players. Only here would a team that is ranked 10th out of 14 have the 2nd most players. It's a joke, as the results on the field show. Big joke.

thing...then again I don't care much for the writing styles either.  Wish there a different blog was out there....cause this one is so full of itself. Much of the writings are so full of "insider" jokes and just flat out trying too hard to be clever.

Any suggestions on a different blog?

It could be the app too - I haven't checked yet, but there isn't really anything in the user's history to indicate that he's a troll of this variety. As many here know, the presence / absence of app posts on the blog is inconsistent and a fair number of the out of context posts around here are products of the web version of half-heard conversations.

One player that should be mentioned in all conference is Rutgers DE, Kemoko Turay. There are quite a few NFL scouts who are high on him and think he could be a potential 1st round pick.

I am a vocal Draftageddon hater because it is too much, and I find myself asking what the point of this excercise is...just give me some damn football or recruiting updates. While I feel bad that you suffered through Draftageddon...I appreciate you did to give us this great analysis. (+10)

Nice breakdown. The defending national champions are pretty good. As has been said elsewhere, OSU isn't going to come back to the pack; UM is going to have to catch them.

I think the only Big 10 teams that could (in)conceivably play each other in a NC game would be Wisconsin and OSU.

If the Badgers ran the table, they would have very high quality wins over OSU (in the B1G Championship) and Alabama.

OSU, meanwhile, is ranked pre-season number 1. If their only loss was a close game against a surging Wisconsin team (who already racked up a win over Alabama), they may still have a shot at a playoff spot depending on how things shook out for the other top programs.

Obviously the chance of this actually happening is infinitesimal.

that the All-B1G two deep is basically the osu roster. They're crazy talented and run a system that could score 35 a game with Purdue talent. Again, I hate it but if I were a betting man I'd put my money on them to repeat. Their schedule is cake, too.
