What the hell has happened?
There was a time when we could look at a schedule for football and circle the last game as the game to win. Now, I look at the schedule and wonder if we can even go 6-6. I have read several forums where people are excited about a 7 win season. 7 wins? Is that what we have been reduced to is hoping to end up one game above 500 and going off to some shitty bowl game. I thought we used to strive and more importantly compete for championships. Bo would be rolling over in his grave if he read that a 7-5 season is a success. I think it is really time to raise the bar. A 10-2 season would be okay, only if the two losses were to Indiana and UConn. I don't want to lose to Penn State again, Illinois again, Purdue again, Michigan friggin State again, and I sure as hell don't want to lose to OSU.
And as far as basketball and hockey go, don't get me started.
We are Michigan for god sakes. Start playing like it.

I, for one, love sub .500 seasons. Very effective for driving away the riff raff posing as fans.
I think it says a lot about the strength of Michigan Hockey as a program that a season like this is considered such a massive disappointment.
That being said, I love the team I saw this weekend. They're playing their hearts out when it counts, and you can't say enough about the kind of play Shawn Hunwick has put forth. Kid has about an eye-blink's worth of game experience going into this, and he's playing like a veteran. Granted our defensive play is helping him out a great deal, but he's still playing out of his mind out there.
As for the football and basketball thing, well, that's been discussed ad nauseum.

at Notre Dame
at Ohio State
Thankfully State, Wisconsin and Uconn are at home this year. I'm not going to say we can't go above .500 because we can. This team has a future and has so much potential but 2010 needs to be the turn around season and it starts with climbing the first mountain and that is beating the Huskies at home. One game at a time my friend.
Even though ND is a tough place to play, keep in mind that they have a new coach, new QB, and still no defense.
I don't think any of us fans are happy to be looking at a 7 or 8 win season, but the university commited to drastically changning the path of the program, they are in mid-transition still. I think we are looking at the reality of what the program will be this season. I do think that we have a lot of experience coming back and players are into the system. Recruiting the kinds of players RR needs, has been happening, but we are not yet at the moment when we are expecting to win every game. I think we will be there, but we are not there yet. I think last season had some great moments but lots of freshmen put into the line of fire, had injuries, mental breakdowns etc, that lead to some disappoinments. We will be better this year.

Personally, I will be unhappy with 7 wins. I expect 8 and hope for 9+.
You act like Michigan has gone 11-1 at worst every season under Lloyd's/Bo's tenure. Michigan did go 7-5 not too long ago, without the slightest hint of restructuring. Just relax, we will be fine.
And when Michigan went 7-5 in 2005, we were dangerously close to a 4-7 season. We beat Iowa in overtime, MSU in overtime, and Penn State in that miracle one second.
App State for me is like going 0-12.

but we didnt thats the point - we won those games. the year osu won the national championship they had something like 5 games they won by 6 points or less...sure they could have loss those games and gone a measly 7-5 but they didnt. thats what good teams do, they win close games.
Was ridiculously close to being a great season or a disaster. All the games save EMU, NIU, NW and IU were close. The 5 games we lost were to ND by 7 (we all remember the crap from that game), Wisconsin and Minny by 3 and OSU and Nebraska by 4.
a great point that often goes unnoticed - when people cite to the 2005 season they talk about how bad it could have been. people fail to remember the other side of the coin: how good it could have been.

Actually, good teams don't have to win a ton of close games to be considered a good team. Those teams are called lucky teams. I don't think anyone would consider 2002 OSU as a "good" team by any stretch, let alone would anyone on this board even acknowledge that they won the NC that year. "Good" teams are consistently dominant with one or two close games to get through, not five or six. "Lucky" teams consistently rely on catching a break.
My larger point was that this year we were just as close to winning 7 games as we were to losing 7 games in 2005. Irrational fans like OP tend to forget that.
To OP--don't go screaming back for the good ole days just yet. Unless you enjoyed those games where played teams like San Diego State, and yes, App. State, way too close than we should've with all of our talent. Just calm the hell down and wait for 2010 to play out.

The only time it matters when you say the team needs to win 9 [substitute personal number of wins important to you] or else is when there are actual consequences:

Otherwise saying the team needs to win X number of games is akin to saying dumb stuff like, "We should try to get more blue chip 4 and 5 star guys that will be a good fit for our system." Really. I am sure the coaches hadn't thought of that. When coach reads the blog, which I am sure he does for insight just like this, the lights will go on and from then on we will start to turn things around.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again. I don't think that a 6-6, or 7-5 season is anybody's aspiration. The popular consensus here is that RR must compile one of those records in order to keep his job. Most people here, (myself included) not only think that RR is a damn good coach, but he will restore U of M back to their winning ways. I for one do not want to see him ran out of here before he has had a chance to graduate a class or prove that he can win here. If 7+ wins buys him more time to REBUILD this program then so fucking be it.
How could you possibly create the worst post ever, having spent this much time on the board? I'm just saying, the pain would go away. Consider the sweet release of being freed from the torment of watching college football. Not gonna say you should do it though.
We are still in transition, I know it sucks believe me. We just need to keep the faith and hopefully this year we get 7 to 9 wins.
