what do you want me to do to the text editor?

Submitted by Brian on
On most posts there's a rich text editor that provides easy access to some common formatting options. Unfortunately, it has some issues (one thing I've noticed is that C&Ping anything, even from your own post, is asking for it), but I think it's better than nothing. Some questions: 1) is it better than nothing? I can give you the option to turn it off entirely if some would like that. 2) should I add more doohickeys and buttons? I wanted to keep it simple, but some people have asked for more stuff. I'll definitely add a source view so that you can fiddle with stuff that doesn't look right, but there are plenty of other options. Is there anything missing you need?

Personally, if you add all those smiley options that permeate most message boards (or similar fare), I may commit hari-kari. But that's, like, my opinion, man.

True, you have to edit some stuff twice, but you can ulimately get it to look like you want. Don't get rid of it entirely, since it has some useful formatting options.

Cutting & pasting from Notepad helps.

why is it only enabled when i edit my posts, not when i first type them?

I would keep it simple with the option to turn it off so we can C&P.

Also, when i'm on my computer at work (square tube monitor) the articles on the front page are pushed down past the Michigan Blogs section. its fine on my wide screen at home

I think anything to improve the text editor that makes the texts more readable is welcome. For example, I think (hope) that in time people will use the bullets more. This makes for easier, quicker reading. But what I would love to see is a spell checker.

Option to turn it off would be great. Not sure if it needs more doohickeys - bold, italic, paragraph, bullets, underline, links - what else do people need? Source view is what's most needed I think.

Baleedat brings up a good point. You can't initially see the B/I/U (etc.) buttons, they only appear upon editing a comment, and when you go to edit it, you lose all formatting you did initially- not sure if that can be fixed but it'd be nice if it could.

The rich text editor is the only thing about the new site that I haven't gotten used to. It would be nice if we could turn it off especially if we didn't have to do it every time we post. Or you could get rid of it completely and just have plain text and buttons for n00bs who don't know the code yet like this but not as crappy looking: http://mgovideo.com/index.php?page=comment

BlueDurham, If you are using Firefox, there are a few spell checking add-ons you can use. I added U.S. English Dictionary 3.0.3 and its a great tool. Works in a similar fashion to the spell checker in MSWord with a red dotted line under words that may have been misspelled.
