What B1G coach would you hire?

Submitted by hoota122 on

If you were a Athletic Director and you recently fired your head basketball coach, which coach (besides Beilein) from the Big Ten would you hire and why?  Personally, I would hire Tom Crean- a great recruiter and an intense coach.

Brad Stevens will be coaching at Duke in a few years so I won't go there.

I'd have to break the bank for Shaka Smart hoops wise...I'd avoid Crean because he seems like more of a recruiter than x and os guy

Bo Ryan was the one that immediately came to mind.  He always coaches up the talent that he gets.  I can't recall the last superstar he had, but that is always a tough place for Michigan to go to.

Bo Ryan.  To finish in the top four of the conference for an entire decade straight is incredible. He's done that at a school that doesn't have a great recruiting base.

Probably Matta, I know the whole eww-Ohio thing, but removing ourselves from that the man has OSU at an elite level.

Of course, I like where we're at with Beilien right now, so, that is moot.

In football, I think Meyer is the only one who would make me think twice about Hoke, and that's purely from on the field results -- two national championships in three years is hard to argue with.  However, IMO, that's not worth the SEC-style recruiting practices and his apparent lack of commitment.  Other than that, I think Pat Fitzgerald might be a good pick.  He's doing some pretty special things at Northwestern (Northwestern!), turning them into a division contender with relatively little talent (especially when compared to other conference members).  To me, that suggests he can really coach.

Again, I like Hoke more than both of them, so, moot here as well.

John Groce. Realistically, he'd probably come cheaper than Matta and Izzo, and is a coaching star in the making. Given time, I think any team he's able to put in place could have great sustained success.
On the other hand, if instant gratification is more important, Bo Ryan is also a possibility. Granted his "happy" demeanor is reminiscent of a basketball version of Dantonio and his tires are running low on tread, but the guy knows how to make any of his teams, regardless of talent level, competitive in B1G play.

pick the yooper - izzo.  as a native i am biased and we have mutual friends, but the guy has performed well and as near as i can tell his program is pretty clean.

for football i'd take pat fitzgeral in a heartbeat.   love the dedication, and getting past that one dance he did during this year's game vs michigan, he's been a class act and recruits to the stanford of the midwest which would be a tough job.
