We get Hosed by Big 10 Officiating in every big game

Submitted by Rdog on

MGoBlog estimated penalties game MSU 21 point equivalents last year.  This year's OSU game OSU was penalized for 6 yards on 2 penalties.   There was a bad PI called on a on-catchable ball in addition to the bad Barret spot and about 5 other bad calls.

Should Michigan consider leaving the Big 10?

What does Michigan need to do in order to get fair officiating?

At some point Warde Manuel needs to step up and say/do something. You're right, it;s a wekly occurence and it cost Michigan the game this year.

Who. Cares!! Yes they fucking sucked. So did the offense. So did speight. Blame them more. It's simple. Stop making fucking excuses and realize that we don't know how to win in the last twenty fucking years

Ample opportunity to win... That the refs mostly took away. Losing to other teams happens, and you get over it. Losing to the game officials never stops sucking. It follows you into the next game with constant wondering "well how much are they going to try and fuck us over this time?".

I'm sorry, but its ignorant to ignore how much of a factor ref's have in a game. They ARE a deciding factor, especially in a game that went to double over time. You really don't think 7 penalties for 59 yards vs 2 penalties for 6 is the difference between a win and a loss? The ref's should be held accountable to do their job, just like everyone else in this world. They certainly did not do it by my eye test.

Yes, M made mistakes. Yes, they could have done more to win the game. But, when a team learns throughout the game that they can do certain illegal things and continue to get away with it, they just keep right on doing it. More and more and even more blatantly. As long as officiating isn't even trying to look just, let alone be just, it does become a case where you really are playing 11 against 16, not 11 against 11.

I tend to agree.  We were up 10 points in the second half and it was on the offense to slam the door and kill OSU's will.  They could not.  Instead, they put our D on the field far too much which wore them out for OT.  BUT, you have to admit the PI no-call against OSU on Grant Perry in OT was a pivotal moment that may have likely turned a FG into a TD.  That PI was almost carbon copy of the Delano Hill PI but the ball wasn't overthrown like it was when Hill was covering!  Flag against Michigan.  No flag against OSU.  Both calls had significant impacts on the game in favor of OSU.  We don't know if it would've changed the outcome but I think it's well within our rights to bitch about it.

3 offensive drives stalled because refs missed blatent pi or holding on 3rd. Then they give them that bs call for pi with 4 min left, so the dive extends instead of them having to put. Honestly, what is wrong with the people who think this lose is on the team or coaches? How many bad calls against Michigan combined with no calls on osu are allowed before you start asking for accountability from the clearly biased refs?

there is no such thing as mistake free football.  not in college, not in the pros.  Stop with your micromanaging every mistake as if we are the only team that makes them.  The ref crap with this game crossed such an obvious line that people who are not invested in the game can see it.  The ref is grinning at the OSU player and pats him on the ass?

No longer is there even the slightest pretense of impartiality.  Screw this conference.

We did not lose because of the awful 4th down spot. We did not lose because of the non pass interference call in OT. We lost because we stopped moving the ball like we did in the 1st half. We lost because our D can't be expected to hold OSU to zero touchdowns.

Or kept on the field by a 3rd down pass interference? Or returned to the field on a drop by Butt on 3rd down? Or returned to the field after the Darboh drop for a 3rd down? Or returned to the field after a botched snap? Or 2 picks? I agree that the spot looked bad but I have a hard time blaming the loss on officiating alone.

The Harbaugh era will be frustrating for us fans. The refs do not like him and they take it out on the kids who are playing their hearts out. I guess they view them as collateral damage.

You are correct that we could have won the game despite horrendous officiating but is that an intelligent standard?  That is true in 100% of games between two good teams.  So, officials always get a pass in those games?

Look, for what it's worth, I can't recall looking to officiating as a material influence in the outcome of our games.  The calls tend to even out enough.

In this game, it affected the outcome.  They called 59 yards of penalties on us and 6 yards on OSU, and that doesn't obviously include the non-calls on OSU.  Let that sink in.

In the off chance you are not a troll, and since you are baffled, let me help you:

The fumble left them on the one or two yard line.  We made them punt and got a short field, which we would not have had in the absence of the fumble and them taking over from the two.  We scored a TD from that short field.  So, at that point, we are in the same place in terms of score without the fumble as we would have been had we scored.  Therefore, that fumble did not have as big of an impact on the game as you attritube to it.

If that doesn't help you, I am afraid that you may be forever baffled.  I fear that may not be new to you.
