WBB upsets #13 Iowa at Crisler, 90-81

Sub-arctic weather caused this game to be postponed from a 7pm, BTN televised game last night to a Noon game on BTN+ today.

There had to be maybe 200-300 people in the seats at Crisler, but they saw a good one.

If anything, that sleepy atmosphere probably hurt #13 Iowa who came out slow and lethargic while Michigan came out energized and on fire. The Wolverines had their foot on the gas pedal and led almost the entire game.

Michigan withstood an Iowa run late in the first half and took this game today.

Nicole Munger returned from her game-ending injury suffered this past Sunday in a loss that caused certain people on here to call for KBA to be fired. Munger started and has 8 points, including two 3-pointers. She also was a great decoy that Iowa had to respect given her standing as the best shooter on this team.

Michigan was aided by another player off the bench. No, it wasn't Naz Hillmon this time. It was Akienreh Johnson who had 19 points, was 3-5 behind the arc and was Michigan's leading scorer (along with Deja Church who also had 19).

Another role player off the bench was Kayla Robbins who took the game over in the second half. She was all over the place drawing contact for and-ones, blocking shots at the other end and was 7-11 from the free throw line. She finished with 13 points.

Michigan got two of Iowa's starting five into foul trouble early with their PG having 4 fouls in the 3rd quarter and fouling out with 3 minutes left in the game when it was an 8 point game.

Michigan won 90-81, the best they've looked since upsetting a ranked Minnesota team over a month ago on New Year's Eve. This was a huge win and will hopefully start a run of wins because time is running out on this season. Michigan has 3 wins over ranked teams but sits in the 70s in RPI.

Michigan is now 13-9 (4-6 B1G) and will not have much time to celebrate as they have to turn around and play again on Sunday at Wisconsin in a game that the Wolverines should absolutely win.

A win against a ranked team isn’t going to qualm questions or concerns about her if we don’t end up making the tournament. That’s the progress we want to see: being a tournament team year in and year out. This win will do us no good if we can’t string the victories together and get back in the tournament picture. Big win today. Keep em coming.

Great win for WBB and even better to hear Nicole is back after seeing her hit the floor last game.  She had a great energy against State and watching her drive the lane up 16-10 against MSU only to wind up in a heap clutching her leg was really disappointing given her great leadership that game.

It was nice to see them turn it around despite falling short last Sunday, but to carry forward today with that same energy against Iowa and come out on top is great.
