WBB Goes Down in B10 Tourney

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa on

After a horrible first half, the women's hoops team made a valiant effort to make the game respectable against 11-seed Illinois, but U-M lost 55-47.  Got smoked by a big first half run by the Lady Illini.

While this stinks, obviously, I want to congratulate the WBB team for a great year. My favorite part is how they beat that school in Ohio twice for the first time ever (IIRC on the ever part). GO BLUE!

Don't they still have a shot at the Tourney? The overall performance this year has been great with some marquee wins. Whatever happens they have had a great year and should be proud.

They still have a shot at the tourney, but a win today would have likely wrapped up a bid. That's what makes this such a tough loss. Now, they'll have to sweat out being on the bubble for the next ten days and see what happens in all the other tournaments.

To look on the bright side, if they do make the tourney, they're now likely looking at a 10 or 11 seed (instead of 8 or 9), so they won't have to face one of the #1 seeds in the second round if they're able to win their first game.

I guess the /s was more in respect to the weeping, wailing, couch-burning and gnashing of teeth reactions we see from some fan-bases when their teams lose and I was trying to be even-keeled about being eliminated from the tournament.  But yes, my wording was not the greatest.

All of the sudden the Illini play well and upset Wisconsin and us to make it to the third round. I guess this loss wasn't so much what they did well but more about how bad we did offensively. First half shooting was especially bad, it was brutal to watch. For a couple of possessions we kept putting up threes and nothing was falling like they had all year. It's good to see the WBB team getting some recognition from the board, I wasn't sure how much people paid attention to WBB.

And if anyone reading this is a student, if you ever have some free time when there's a game going on in the future, head down to Crisler and show them your support. Many of the sports teams that don't get much coverage are worth watching. I'm going to try to get around to one event from as many teams as I can throughout my next couple of years. So far I've got the following down: Football, Hockey, MBB, WBB, Volleyball, Gymnastics, and Baseball. Still quite a few more to go.

Also, volleyball games a good time. They sometimes have a small pep band and The Zone is usually rocking.
