WBB: #21 Michigan v. Wisconsin, BTN

Submitted by jman077 on

Celebrate the win over Indiana by watching more Michigan basketball on Big Ten Network. Wolverines are up 5 a couple minutes into the second half. We'll probably end up stomping the Badgers. It's a good excuse to not get up from your couch for another 40 minutes or so.

Michigan star Katelyn Flaherty already has 25 points.

This was a lot closer than I expected but we're pulling away late up 11. We blew this team out back in January.

Katelynn Flaherty has her thid 30-point game in the last month in a half(!), going for 35 in this one as Michigan takes it, 75-66.

We're now 21-5 and 10-2 in the B1G.

We'll head to Indiana on Thursday night and then face MSU at Crisler a week from today.

Absolutely. She's shooting up the chart. She's at #2 right now with 1,799 points.

She just need 278 points to pass Diane Dietz. She has the rest of this season and her senior year next year to do it.

She's already the all-time leader in 3 pointers.

I'm partial to Dietz because I was helping with sports info back when she was playing, and 3-pointers were an NBA gimmick. Of course, the game was entirely different back then for many reasons. Weird if you look at the Michigan record book. Hard to tell exactly how many Dietz scored (field goals and points scored don't always add up) but Flaherty will get there. I remember the attendance was usually estimated from a quick glance at the crowd - some of those games drew only double digits back then. I wonder if Flaherty will set the single-game scoring record. Dietz had a 45, but Flaherty's 38 this season against Ohio State is second in school history. Dietz could score from 3-point range, they just only counted two. Wisconsin has been playing much better lately, though 1-11 in the Big Ten shouldn't make for that much of a challenge. Looking forward to MSU and what could be an undefeated season at Crisler.

I suspect that the two of you worked together at sports info??  He was a student assistant, who went on to become the Assistant SID at Northwestern, before leaving the business.  Will Perry was the SID (assisted by Bruce Madej and Jim Schneider) when he was there.

The women's team circa 1980 featured Dietz at SG, Lori Gnatkowski at PG, Katie McNamara at SF, and Penny Neer (mother of current UM drum major) at PF, and Abby Currier at C.  There was also a forward named Jeanne White who, IIRC, married one of the hockey players.

And you didn't need to estimate the size of the crowd at the women's games.  You could count the number of fans in attendance, and double digits was the norm rather than the exception.

Possibly. Though I was just a volunteer. My dad brought home the Daily and the team was looking for students to work games. I showed up and someone asked if I was a student. I didn't clarify high school. I usually worked the 30-second clock. I only worked Dietz's senior year. There was a lot of excitement then, because it was their first year of actually being decent. That 45-point game was incredible - first time the team ever reached 100 against a conference opponent. People were standing around afterward like they couldn't believe they had just played in or watched that game. I remember Gnat - Jenny Ryan was a lot like her - high-energy, intense. Dietz's little sister was on that team, but never said a word. They had a 6-5 shot-blocker, Patrice Donovan, who couldn't have weighed more than 170 and had trouble getting down the court on offense. There was a freshman who scored a lot of points, Harte. Things dropped off after that season. I wish sports info would clean up the record book, by the way. Names, stuff like having Dietz's record-setting game in the wrong season and not listing it as the most a woman has ever scored at Crisler. Minor things, but it adds up. KBA is making great strides with the program - a program that has a losing record against every single member of the Big Ten. They deserve better support.

My brother graduated in 1982.  Went on to get a grad degree at Northwestern and was Assitant SID under Sharon Miller.  Other student assistants at U-M during his tenure included Gregg Burke and Mike Bovino.

I think that Patrice Donovan was related to Anne Donovan, who was something like 6'8" and I think was on the Olympic team.

I was the PA announcer for some games around 1984.  There was a 6'6" center who must have weighed 275 pounds.  She took up a lot of space in a 2-3 zone, but constantly got into foul trouble.  Not sure on this one, but I believe that she got kicked off the team before the end of the season for some type of theft-related activity.  And this was before things hit rock bottom!

I'm glad I wasn't around for that. I transferred to Michigan in 1984 after a couple of years out of town. A lot of players left early during that time period - something must have happened. I didn't know any of the names when I got back. Started stringing for the News then, but didn't do much college reporting for the first couple of years. So I remember the teams later in the '80s much better. Just to stay somewhat current... I see an announcement today that Abby Cole won't be playing this season due to a leg injury. That's too bad. I was looking forward to seeing her and Thome together terrorizing anyone who tried to get a shot up in close. I hope Cole takes her extra year of eligibility even though she can't play more volleyball.
