Ways to display signed jerseys

Submitted by I Like Burgers on

Time for a break from the melodramatic Ohio State threads.

For those of you that have signed football jerseys, how do you display them?  I have a signed one from Woodson I've had for a bit and would like to get it displayed somehow.  And since the holiday season is fast approaching, figured this would be a good thing to ask for.  Any tips on where you can get that done?  I've looked around with some Google searches, but nothing seems to stand out.  Figured I could lean on some real life feedback.

Fire away.

Honestly, take it to a framing shop and get it professionally done.  It's not cheap, but it'll hold up way better in the long run.  Aaron Brothers has good custom framing sales every few months, that's where I've had all my jerseys done, but if you can find a local option, go for it.  Big things to be concerned with are if the matting is acid free and won't damage the jersey, and to make sure you have museum quality, or at least UV protected, glass to minimize any chance of fading.

I bought a display case (for a signed hockey jersey) on Amazon from sfDisplaycom and it's holding up well.  I checked prices at framing shops and decided it was worth it to do it myself.

Gr1mlock is right too...get the highest quality glass you can (UV at a minimum, even if being displayed in a "non walkout" basement.)

I have, thanks to my lovely wife, an authentic signed Steve Yzerman jersey.  Unfortunately it was signed on the front so I was faced with displaying the jersey like this

and nobody knows it's signed or with the wings logo facing forward and not many people (here in Ohio anyways) know who signed the damn thing cause his signature isnt very legible.

Michaels does a good job and has half off sales if you look for them. They just did 2 for me. It's still very expensive but worth it to have it done properly.

No signed jersey yet unfortunately, but I do have a framed picture of Desmond's ND catch that he signed for me when I was in middle school or something. Also have a signed football from him. The picture has been framed for a long time and has been displayed in my bedroom on a coffee table throughout many moves. I have yet to find a great place to display the football but I'm working on it. Great topic!

I had a signed Braylon Edwards jersey and just kept wearing it.  The signature did eventually fade, but I got a lot of great use out of it and I've got tons of pictures of me in the signed jersey with the signature legible (including a picture of when I got the jersey signed after the Michigan game at Northwestern - I was there with my cousins when we were all in high school.  Great memory).

Overall, I'm satisfied with the decision to keep using that jersey and wear it to a bunch of Michigan games and other events where people could see it.

Own a frame shop and am an executive in a national framing franchise.  The reality is it depends on your goals.  If you really want to preserve it over time I STRONGLY suggest you visit a local frame shop.  They will have the knowledge and materials to really do the job correctly.

Re: the big box, don't fall for the sales.  There have already been successful lawsuits in NY and Canada about their false pricing claims.  Over the holiday weekend they were running 70% off the entire order.  Really, someone can offer that and still be profitable? Of course they can if they price right.  Even at that discount I still am priced competitively with them and we're not a cheap shop.  Mark up to mark down is a real retail strategy.  Also, many of the big box stores skimp on materials and education for their team and there is no accountability. Especially when it comes to their "ready made" situations.  For instance, CGordini, after a couple of years the part of your jersey that is facing forward will be a totally different shade of blue than the contents that aren't exposed.  Additionally if those frames aren't backed with something other than what came in the package there is a corrosive piece in contact with the back of your jersey that is also leaching color into/out of your jersey.

tl:dr - If the goal is to get it on the wall cheap then by all means go ahead and buy a $30 box from China but if you really want to preserve and present it visit a well regarded local framer and let them know your budget and they'll present you your options.

I'm happy to make recommendations based upon my knowledge of various areas if anyone needs.
