Way OT: Hillbilly heroin

Submitted by no joke its hoke on

Tomorrow evening on A@E they will be showing "Hillbilly Heroin",a show about how prescription drugs have destroyed my hometown of Portsmouth,Ohio. I'm sure everyone on here knows someone that has had a drug problem, but I urge you to watch tomorrow night to see how this problem has ruined a great river town. Unfortunatley my family has been impacted by this and one of my family members is even on the show. I hope if any of you have a family member or a friend effected by prescription drug abuse you watch this show and maybe find a way to help them. I hope what has happened in this town over the last 10 years never happens to were you live. If anyone reading this has a prescription abuse problem I hope you know there is away out of it and if you need anyone to talk to or help you please let me know and I'll help any way I can.

Small world. I grew up in Scioto county too in Lucasville (in the last year I have moved a couple counties north to Chillicothe). It saddens me that the drug problem has gotten so bad in the area. I am very anxious to see the show tonight. Thanks for the reminder.

during my childhood I spent most of my summers in Lucasville. My grandparents lived on Thomas Hollow rd. I Hope your doing well in Chillocothe. its amazing how much better of a area Chillicothe is than Portsmouth now,and a lot of it has to do with this awful drug problem.

Wow my childhood home was on Lincoln Lane, a small road off of Thomas Hollow and I graduated from Valley.

Looks like one of the kingpins is going down at least.

I really hope Portsmouth can recover from this soon. It's a shame to see such a historic town in this type of situation. Most are probably unaware that the Detroit Lions originated from Spartan Stadium in Portsmouth and were formerly known as the Portsmouth Spartans.

I have had many close friends who have thrown their lives away on this addiction. They have been in and out of rehab, sobered up and went back to it again. Marriages have been ruined as well as parent's hearts broken, all due to pain killers.

From what I have seen, many of them would have been addicted to just about any drug they tried out, the accessibility of these drugs is what was more of the draw towards these drugs in particular. Rehab will get you off pills temporarily but a lifestyle change is the only thing to keep you off of them for good. This means no drugs and especially no alcohol which all seems to lead to a slip up.

On a final note, the irony of Suboxone which is given to block the opiates, is also addictive! There is a saying that the difference between a petty thief and a real crook is that a thief wears a mask and a crook wears a suit. I think this applies here as well.

"On a final note, the irony of Suboxone which is given to block the opiates, is also addictive!"

you may be confusing methadone with suboxone,  that statement contradicts itself.

Suboxone

for clarifiation is not addictive. It is an angonist in other words it stops the person from getting high if the ingest opioids or opiates.  The phenmenon you may witness is that some addicted persons may hoard or seek suboxone in absence of opioids or opiates because it does also stop withdrawals which for an addict is not a high but a momentary relief of the withdrawal symptoms they seek to avoid.  Therefore it simply looks like they are addictive that is why they are the now preferred method of Detox vs Methadone which is indeed addictive.

Suboxone is indeed addictive. I have actually had buddies on this for years and upon googling have learned it is indeed addictive. Biprenorphine is the active ingredient and is only a partial agonist. The withdrawal symptoms, though milder,do last longer when coming off of it. Those who take it who do not taper down properly have reported having a pretty bad withdrawal.

over the last 5 years in Scioto alone they have busted 5 pill mills and there are still 3 right now that I know of still open. Untill the Feds make these pill mills impossible to open. Florida Dr. are filling this prescriptions like there nothing. It runs from Florida to southern ohio even more so than the crack that runs fromDetroit to Huntington,Wv. This town is right in the cross road for all those drugs.

The title of the show makes no sense.  There's prescription drug abuse everywhere.  It's not just in rural areas.  I specifically remember a series of articles in the Boston Globe a couple years ago about how the South Shore of Massachusetts has been particularly hard hit by this epidemic.

Sorry about your town and I wish you and your family the best. I've had to deal with an ex girlfriend that got caught up in all sorts of drugs and I got her back on her feet and got her a job and everything. I also repaired her relationship with her family and all. After all of that she played me and decided that we needed to be friends. Drugs can really screw your life over and the best thing to do is get help. So best of luck with your family and I wish you the best.
