Watkins' Coach - Miami & Michigan Are Top 2

Submitted by Matt EM on

It seems as though Michigan has replaced Clemson in Sammy Watkins' top 2. I'm pretty surprised, I was always under the impression that Clemson was on top rather than Miami, but it is definitely good to hear that M has a legit shot according to his coach. It certainly doesn't hurt that Dallas Crawford is probably in his ear, and according to Tom VH & Sam we have a very good chance with Dallas, and therefore it seems we have a decent shot with Sammy as well.

I think it's clear they're either both going to go to Miami or both go to Michigan. Both are studs, hopefully we're pushing hard to get Crawford and Watkins.

From what I read on Rivals (I know, I know!) it seems as though we are the leader with Crawford and he would come here without Watkins. It is Watkins who has a strong desire to play with Crawford.

It sounds like there is a good chance they end up at different schools.

This quote is with respect to Crawford, not Watkins, which is actual a less-rosy picture than what we were previously led to believe (M lean).

With respect to Watkins, the article doesn't say we're in a top two with Miami, and in fact suggests Clemson, Miami, Alabama, WVU and Michigan are all "in the mix" with Florida as a dark horse.   The only thing saying we're in a top 2 for Watkins is the author's tweet which links to his article, but it doesn't mesh with his article at all.

I think people are misreading this article a little.

This is a case where Miami's Dade/Broward clique may work in Michigan's favor.  It's a long way from Ft Meyers to Dade County.  Hopefully, someone gets in their ear about how it worked out at Miami for others from that side of the state, like Florida Mr Football winner and State Champion QB Robert Marve.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this wrong, but it looks to me like the coach is saying that Michigan is second to Miami for Crawford.  All he says for Watkins is that Florida is a sleeper.  This article doesn't tell us anything new.  If anything, it tells us that Miam is a slight favorite for Crawford, who we thought was leaning towards Michigan.

I looked for the quote and found it:

"WR Sammy Watkins has two leaders and one is not MIA. It's Michigan & Clemson and he visits Ann Arbor this weekend"

No one in the thread seems to have caught that tiny detail of the battle being Michigan vs. Clemson rather than Michigan vs. Miami. Otherwise, I am missing something.

that Jamie Newberg, the author, has tweeted one thing (the quote that you cite, that it's down to Clemson and Michigan for Watkins) and then in his article has quotes that say nothing to support his tweet.  Rather, there are general statements that Watkins loved Clemson's camp, and that up to 5 other schools are also involved, including Florida making a serious push.

And again, the Crawford info (that Miami leads and Michigan is a close second) seems counter to what most others have heard, which is that Crawford is a Michigan lean, if only slightly.

in sum, either he's terrible at putting his information into sentences, or Mr. Newberg might be a little unrealiable with respect to some of his statements.
