Watched Jordan Poole play Sunday

Was at an AAU tourney near Milwaukee this weekend and decided to stick around and watch Jordan Poole in the 17U title game. It was an interesting experience, so thought I'd share some observations. Admittedly, this is just one game:

Basically, I'd describe Poole's game as a 3-point shooting diva. He was out on the floor to do one thing. Didn't show much interest in defense, rebounds or passing, although he did rifle one pass under the basket and almost took a teammate's head offf, the poor kid was so surprised to see the ball coming at him.

The game starts, Poole isn't doing much, forces a couple bad shots and I'm groaning to myself. Then the coach decides its time for the Poole Show to begin and they iso him at the top of the key, he does about 16 crossover dribbles, steps back and drains a long 3 with a hand in his face. He does this twice in a row, draws a 3-shot foul in the corner, then drains a 30-footer. Within a couple minutes, he put his team in control of the game (which they won).

The guy's an interesting player, but tough to tell how he'll fit into a team concept, whether he can catch-and-shoot or have a well-rounded game. There were some very good players on the court. Poole matched up agaisnt Brad Davison (Wisc committ) at the start. I think Gary Trent Jr. was out there for Howard Pulley, but he didn't jump out at me. Tyus Jones' little brother, a 2018, is good.

Another observation was Poole is kind of a free spirit. He was very loose before the game, joked around with refs, wore his shorts short. While his team warmed up, he was off by himself at midcourt using a hand-held foam roller all over his body, then did a bunch a waist-high dribbles. Took maybe 1 shot before the game started.

It will be interesting to see how that La Lumiere superteam fares this seson.

Perhaps, but did anyone read that report and not think he was exaggerating and being overly dramatic? Bottom line seemed to be that when he took over the game shooting 3s, that was exactly what his coach wanted. It worked, he led his team to victory and that somehow led to a report with quite a negative tone.

Just because he doesn't go full Fred Jackson doesn't mean it's ripping on the kid.

The ability to drain a contested 3 off the dribble seemingly at will sounds good.  Also sounds more like the quality of his team or competition may have him a bit bored.  Never been on a horrible team in a bad league where you just sort of did your thing unless it was mandatory to go ape and be a bit of a ballhog?

Or he's a high school kid, 17 who has a great shot and needs more coaching(duh).

One game is fairly tough to fully judge a kid by, but it does give you a good feel of certain things.  The effort does bother me a bit.

Ive seen some real good talent in my area (tri-city - Bay City/Saginaw/Midland).  And out of all the kids i have seen play in high school, you would be shocked as to who the best high school player was....

NOT Jason Richardson

NOT Brian Bowen

NOT Eric Davis

NOT Draymond Green

NOT Joshua Southern

NOT Tory Jackson

NOT DarDar Tucker

The best ive seen?  Eric Devendorf.  He was soooooo talented.  Its really too bad he was an uncoachable loose cannon.  He was unbelievable in high school.

BTW, Jason Richardson was a close 2nd.  And he was before my time, but if i would have seen him play in high school, Mark Macon probably would have been #1 on this list.  He was a high school legend.

No doubt this was the last game in a long weekend, guys were losing interest. Don't mean this to be an analysis of him as a player, just an interesting snapshot.

I'd describe Brandon Peters as a shotgun QB diva.

I observed film on Brandon Peters.  He is not skilled at taking snaps under center.

At the Signing of the Stars, he looked disinterested and more focused on goofing around on his phone.

Also, he isn't a good teammate in that he whined about Herbet's commitment video on twitter.
