Was Peppers' near INT a lateral?

Submitted by uofmdds96 on

When I went and rewatched the game I kept rewinding Peppers jumping the play and through my maize colored glasses, this looks like a lateral to me.  Leidner's front foot is on the 41 when he throws it and Jabrill puts his hands on it on the 40 yard line. The intended receiver had to turn around to try and catch it because the ball was thrown behind him.  Even if it is from the 41 to the 41 it does not get thrown forward.  This would have been nice to have seen reviewed.  With the whistle we could have had the ball on the 30 where he gained possession of it.

I made a GIF of it and hopefully one of these two links works.

I think it's pretty clear it goes forward. His front foot is on the 36 and releases the ball just ahead of the 35. The ball is knocked away by peppers either right at or just behind the 36. It's close, but forward.

Definitely not complaining in any way, but Peppers has dropped at least two that would have gone for six this season. If/when he can fix that (or maybe he's just caught a couple unlikly bad breaks), he'll be even more ridiculous out there.

He just mistimed his jump and the Lewis made up for it on the next play.

This one looked even easier, but the replay shows the WR grabs his left arm (which is legal because Jabrill has tipped the ball).

If it's his right arm being grabbed he still may be able to cradle the ball with his left and make the one armed INT...but it with being is left arm and the ball going in that direction...he really didn't have as much of a change as I originally thought.

You can especially see this because he tries to catch the ball with both hands...which in retrospect, if would've been better to try to do what they teach you NOT to do, and catch it with his body. With his hands turned out, it became too tough to make the one handed grab with his right.

That said...has one team completed a meaningful screen against Peppers?

He's standing on the 41, his arm brings the ball back to the 40...and Peppers gets it on the 41.

Regardless, it should've been reviewed. Peppers also has to take it to the house and make it feel like a lateral and start pointing up at the video board for them to review it.

How many times do you see a player do this and then all of a sudden an official comes running in from the sideline waiving his hands in the air?

Looks like he knew what the play was 100%. Made a half-step to the left to juke the defender then blew by on the right and nearly caught the ball in stride. Absolutely no hesitation on his part, he was stepping forward from the snap

That was close. It should have been reviewed though. It may be forward by a few inches, but it was definitely worth a look though. Hard to tell from that camera angle.

Peppers. Man he's going to be a lot better once he stops making these RS freshman mistakes and the game slows down for him. Scary thought for everyone else, actually.

Would we have to challenge, or is the decision made by the officials? Because if the coach has to challenge I believe that we couldn't--we used a challenge earlier in the game. FWIW, I don't think this play would have been overturned, but that's why I think maybe we shouldn't have used the challenge on the earlier play.

If he keeps playing the way he's playing both offensively, defensively, and on special teams then after a couple years of experience/wisdom he will win a heisman
