He also botched terribly the renewal of the ND series, said we shouldn't have night games he personally doesn't like them, and talked Red into staying another year, so he just doesn't know what he's doing, at best. At worst he'll be another Douchebag Dave, and this move against a poor 19 year old and the bad PR it brings us now doesn't bode well

To be fair, the press and the comments here are all being driven by a civil complaint.  By its very nature, it is the plaintiff's best telling of her grievances, and inherently one-sided.

We don't know the whole story - it may be that Manuel was not involved (certainly his department, but still), it may be that the woman is a total asshole and this was the last straw, it may be that the woman soccer player's coach had expressly warned all the players to represent UConn well on TV, it could be that Manuel was fully-involved and made a rash decision.  We don't know.

FWIW, I'm friends with a former UConn men's assistant soccer coach.  He had nothing but good things to say about Manuel (with whom, in fairness, he barely interacted).  The two UConn basketball coaches?  The reviews were ... disfavorable.

Schools have every right to govern what you do while flying their colors. I have no issue with her scholarship being yanked. And it doesn't even sound like Warde's the main focus of the suit anyway.

I'm not as quick to jump on UConn as many on here. Story is a lawsuit brought on by the player and is very one sided. Was she told she has to act a certain way to keep her scholarship? Were there other incidents she was involved in? Sounds like her grades were bad, did this play a role? Lots of unknowns.

I mean -- Yes, of course the criminal stuff is bad and casts a negative light on you and the school.  But it's hard to deny that it's different and more direct when you give the middle finger not to an opposing player or the crowd, but directly into a television camera while wearing your school's colors on the field of play.

Everybody has flipped the bird at some time or another. Her's just got caught on TV......it no big deal. Certainly not big enough to be kicked off the team and lose your scholarship.

Hey, I appreciate this thread simply as an excuse to keep the flame alive on the abject fixed screwing we got in that shit state down south.  One that could not have been more obvious and one that would make any honest, even partisan, football fan blush, if there are any to be found down there.

And what have we heard from WM?  Crickets? At least after spartan bob, yet another case of an extra play being given to a team that had actually lost the game, changes were made as to who runs the clock.

Perhaps a statement regarding not having ass slapping fans of the home team reffing games anymore from Delaney or a request to Delaneyto that affect from WM would have been appropriate.  You know acknowledge the fuck up, and pledge to mitigate such future fuck ups.

But nope.  This shit will still keep happening, and disproportionately to M as well.

Still fucking mad.

I think UConn could fight that by saying that they pushed her out not because she's female but because she's an inferior athlete.  And they might end up having to say that they've done that to male athletes too.  The problems with this are obvious, but it will be interesting if they make that argument.

Can't believe that people are assuming this complaint is all true. Americans must be the most easily manipulated group ever. Wait to hear both sides, folks. There is no evidence presented in this article at all other than the plaintiffs version of events. Yeesh.

I love how people here are judging the athletic director because they, like the "fearless leader" of this blog, are still so preoccupied with David Brandon.

YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO THINK ABOUT THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR THAT MUCH. BRANDON WAS THE EXCEPTION, NOT THE RULE.

Warde Manuel has not hired or fired a head coach of a revenue sport at UM. When he does, we will begin to have a record of what type of AD he is where it counts. How he handles Beilein and the ridiculous contract extension Hackett gave him in the next year or two will be telling. Until then, there's not much to talk about.

The fact that you can get a scholarship for playing women's soccer, a game that nearly nobody cares about, is incredible by itself. She should be thankful.

Should schools not give scholarships for academics, then?  People don't turn on the TV to watch the best students civil engineer, or philosophize, or whatnot... Yet, there are academic scholarships. Just as their are performing arts scholarships.

And, there actually is a "career path" for women's professional soccer player.

I took a quick look at the complaint, which shows up as a pdf document at the bottom of the article.  I didn't read the content, but was struck by one fact:  it was filed by the plaintiff student pro se (without a lawyer).  Again, I did not read it, but it appears to be professionally done.  More important, who files an action like this without a lawyer (and why wouldn't a lawyer be interested in a contingency fee on a case like this that might garner some media attention)?

Perhaps there is less to this lawsuit than meets the eye.
