Walk-on Impact Players?

Submitted by Moleskyn on

I know there was a thread created yesterday to discuss the possibilities of who could/would fill in for Troy Woolfolk, but I think this topic is sufficiently different to warrant its own thread. And, FWIW, this is something I was wondering about before Troy went down.

I know in an ideal situation we would rather keep the walk-ons with the practice squad, but Kovacs definitely proved himself a sure tackler last year, if nothing else, and won himself a scholarship. So, are there any walk-ons who have the potential (either because of skill or position openings) to make an impact on the field this year, i.e., Jordan Kovacs (thanks The Oatmeal!)? I guess I'm directing this question to those who have some insider knowledge of what's going on and who's on the roster, because frankly, I don't even know who our walk-ons are.

At the pace we're going, any season ticket holders who happen to be in the stadium fare a decent shot to be impact players in our secondary.

Mark Moundros is a former walk-on who might start at FB or MLB.

Kevin Leach will probably play special teams, but I can't see him playing Spur with the other talent at the position.

Kovacs, obviously.

If Moundros plays defense, I'd imagine John McColgan will get some reps at FB.

Floyd Simmons was 2nd on the depth chart at Spur at the end of the spring.

I think Joe Reynolds could be a decent walk-on receiver, but there's a decent amount of talent at receiver this year.  Maybe a year or two down the road...

Even after a redshirt year, Gibbons hasn't a nailed down the starting kicker job. I know Broekhuizen is one of the walkons challenging him and I forget the other one but both could end up as the kicker.

Someone or sometwo or maybe even (come one walkons) somethree will just have to step up.  It may be unlikely but not impossible.
