Walk on DB Louis Grodman receives scholarship

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on January 25th, 2019 at 11:31 PM

Congratulations to Louis Grodman who tweeted today that he has been placed on scholarship. He's a senior that has played somewhat on special teams in the past 2 years. It sounds like he will have a 5th year in which he will be on scholarship.

For scholarship trackers, this puts us at 5 over the 85 max, so we will be seeing some attrition in the next couple months before the fall.

yeah, happy for these guys and all - just seems like odd timing, especially since they could benefit from adding transfers or another few prospects in the current class.  walkons typically earn open scholarships right before the season - im all for it then when it makes more sense from roster management perspective

Yeah, well thought out reply! You do realize that getting another “few prospects” in the class hamstrings the team for the next 3 additional years, right?

This IS the roster management you mention.

Think McFly!

Edit: Reply to getsome. Can’t tell on my phone which post this is linked to!

What a snarky dumb ass reply, Matte.

This is an example of good roster management. Adding more 2019 freshman impacts available scholarships for the next 4 years.

There is obviously nobody left (that is likely to UM) for 2019 that UM feels warrants tying up a scholarship for up to 4 years.

I think it’s awesome. And maybe doing it now allows the walk-on more by covering $ earlier.

Maybe a loophole that was never taken advantage of? Maybe because the scholarship limit doesn’t kick in until fall camp?

Whatever the case, I’m betting UM is in a better position to manage the roster.

But snark on!

It appears as though there are no more "in-comings"...transfers or otherwise. There is certainly no reason to add recruits unless there is a high up-side. Next year, even with the usual attrition, the class will likely be (much) smaller than the last several. However, Michigan has liberally brought in "projects"...though some fans are distressed by this, I believe it is a fair strategy from both the roster and player side.

As I understand, eligibilty to be a walk-on in the fall for "the ride" (participating in football) does not mean he will be on scholarship this fall.  He was awarded it for winter term.  As a walk-on it would need to be awarded in the late summer for him to count in the fall.  The Glasgows had scholarships awarded each year in the late summer as I recall.

anyone else unimpressed by James harden scoring? MFer shoots 35+ times a game. Anyone in NBA should be scoring 40+ points with that shooting volume....and he doesn’t have to dribble!

He's averaging 24 FGA per game this season and has taken more than 35 shots in a game once this season. He's 18th in the league in True Shooting % despite leading the league in Usage Rate by a mile. This is a terrible take. And to address your point that anyone who shoots as much as him should be averaging 40+ PPG, Harden is averaging 45.3 PPG in January.

As I stated previously, while fans are distressed by this, this is a fair strategy to sort through the numbers and improve the overall roster. I do wonder about the possibility of a "loophole" here-to the exiting players...are they offered/awarded a "general" scholarship to continue their Michigan education-if they so choose???

Not much strategy.  Player X transfers or drops out.  Scholarship available.  Scholarship given to deserving player not transferring and not currently on scholarship..  If walk-on, not a continuing award.  Look at upcoming 5th year players.  Decide who to offer a fifth year.  Let them know.  Manage graduates and incoming.  Rinse and repeat.

I doubt the existence of loopholes to cheat the system.

A FAN (in reply to UMBIG11): [Fighting BPONE, grits teeth, ignores that "mostly" is not "all", pushes past some recent DL attrition, conveniently forgets that the Asst HC/QB coach situation still seems unresolved, and says:]

Nice! I'm optimistic about this offseason's coaching staff changes and roster evolutions!

[He pauses, seems to consider, then coming to a realization says:]

You know, I really am optimistic! Keep at it this offseason, men, and I look forward to seeing you in the Spring!  Go Blue!

Didn’t realize it was going to be 10, wow. College football is in an interesting place right now. Taking a look at the transfer portal this week is evidence of that. There’s more information about players transferring and the NCAA appears to be at a crossroads. Players immediately eligible for weaker reasons than previous years. Assistant Coach X left for another job or piece of garbage HC leaves for health reasons- I should be able to transfer and play.

Rant aside, interesting couple of months to see who moves on and where.

If he's the guy I'm thinking of he's on kickoff coverage is almost always the first guy down the field. So much so that we started noticing it and looked up who it was mid-season (in the random time my phone worked in the stadium).
