W Tennis beats Ohio State for 6th straight B1G Championship

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

It all came down to today. The winner of today's dual in Columbus would clinch a share of the B1G Championship and barring a major brain fart in their regular season finale, the B1G Championship as a whole since both #14 Michigan and #17 Ohio State both finish with teams they should kick around.

Michigan (20-3, 10-0 B1G) went into Columbus and dominated OSU (17-5, 9-1 B1G) like they haven't been dominated all year long in conference play when Michigan clinched the championship 4 matches in taking a 4-0 lead after Alex Najarian got the win.

Michigan would win every match in the dual except the final one to win 6-1.

Michigan has now won 6 straight B1G Championships. They're still looking for that elusive B1G Tournament Championship after losing in the tournament championship game for the last 10 years in a row to Northwestern.

Michigan has won 27 straight B1G matches going back to the 2012-13 season. They will go for their second straight perfect B1G season and the outright B1G Championship on Sunday at Penn State at 11am. PSU is 11-9 on the year.

Great win, and another trophy in the case of one of our most decorated programs of late.  They don't get a lot of attention for various reasons, but women's tennis represents the school very well.  Hope this can be the year they break through with a B10 tourney crown!

It's incredible how good the women's tennis team has been in the last six years. Last I looked, they were the highest ranked team not from the south or west. The ability that coach Bernstein has in recruiting not only the best players in the state, but getting some of the best juniors around the nation to play at a school that only plays two or three weekends for the entire year outside is something else! Congrats to the team, and hopefully this is the year they make a deep run in NCAA's!!

They have only lost to UNC, USC, and Georgia.  Those teams are currently ranked 1, 2, and 6.

For those who follow collegiate tennis more closely, is Michigan good enough to knock off those top-ranked teams in the NCAAs?  Or are they in that next tier below the truly elite?

I would say that this is the best team that we have had over the past six. They have been lucky to get a few outdoor matches recently, but I would still say they are at the very top of the second tier, and could make a run in the NCAA's if they get a draw against the teams in the 6,7,8 rankings.
