FWIW I am friends with Vlad on facebook and on one of his status updates the other day he was talking to a kid about why he wasn't getting more PT and his response was: "I'm just waiting my turn man".

Vlad's an interesting case and this Saturday will tell everything. There were rumors that his knee was still causing him problems and that he wasn't a full go. But on the other hand he played in the first four games on special teams. However, he has not played in the last two, which is where it gets interesting. If I recall correctly, you can get a medical redshirt if you're hurt and don't play after game 4. If he plays Saturday, then that is obviously out the window. But if he doesn't play, then I wonder if UM is setting it up to apply for a medical redshirt with him due to his knee.

This is from a waiver request packet: "In order to be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete must have competed in at least one contest in the first half of the season, but no more than three contests or 30%, whichever is greater (14.2.4). The total number of contests is calculated by the schedule on the first date of competition. Participation in Conference postseason is counted as one competition." https://admin.xosn.com/pdf6/104652.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=600 [PDF] [EDIT] I thought you only were allowed 3 games in football, but this is from USC's official blog: "So, in the cases of Johnson, [defensive tackle Hebron] Fangupo and [safety Marshall] Jones, all played in either three or four games, which qualifies them for a hardship since 30 percent of a 12 game season is 3.6, which is rounded up to four games. A bowl game would make the season 13 games, and 30 percent of that is 3.9, which is again rounded up to four games. Either way, all three players meet the criteria for a medical hardship under the NCAA rules." http://www.usctrojans.com/blog/2009/09/potential-exists-for-more-eligib…

... your power of deduction reminds me of this: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.

Vlad cannot redshirt because he has been playing special teams, but I do agree that I hope Turner redshirts. I'd much rather him be a redshirt freshman with a full 4 years of eligibility ahead of him, then a sophomore with 3 years of eligibility ahead of him.

I read all the posts, and I still don't understand if Vlad can still redshirt or not. In how many games did he participate? If I remember correctly, he didn't play the first two games, and I also don't remember him playing in the last two. I wish somebody could ask Rich about this next Monday in the press conference, but then we will probably figure it out after we watch Saturday's game.

if he obtains a medical waiver. Otherwise he cannot. He has played in the first four games (participation charts below) but has not played in the last 2. As discussed above, as long as he plays in no more than 30% of the games (4 games) and is hurt/injured/unable to play, he can apply for a medical redshirt. This is what Hemingway did last year, for example. http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/090509aaa.html http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091209aaa.html http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091909aaa.html http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/092609aaa.html http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/100309aaa.html http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/101009aaa.html

If he's played in 4 games already, that's 33%, obviously above the 30% allowed. Unless I'm missing something, he's already lost the year. I know from experience that the NCAA follows these rules to a "T". And, IIRC, the 30% only includes regular season scheduled games.

Does it say that in the NCAA bylaws? Or is this just assumed to be correct? Yeah, I saw the USC thing, but that hardly reassures me. I just know, in another sport, I got screwed over by a technicality, and didn't receive a medical redshirt and lost a year of eligibility. EDIT: Bylaw 14.2.4.3.6.2 States the fraction of the percent limitation is rounded up.

I was in the dark about the redshirting requirements prior to this year, but "me" has it right. I'd rather it be that you can play a certain percentage of the season and still redshirt, it would allow the coaches some room to figure out their best starting lineups and what freshman/sophomores need more time to develop physically and mentally. I think it would act as a NFL preseason for coaches, and could very well cut down on injuries to the players that are underdeveloped and not physically ready for college football. This is why I think RR is so in favor of a college football preseason. It allows the coaches to learn more about their players, especially the young ones.

If Vlad and Turner are ready to help the team immediately, I would like to see them, and I believe we would. I care about winning games now, not whether or not they have an extra season on the back end. Why? Winning games now ultimately makes the necessary impression(s) to help get the recruits that Michigan needs to restock the team, so that when Vlad and JT are done, Michigan will have high-caliber replacements in th wings. Think about the "what ifs" regarding some of the safety and coverage failures thus far, and then try to explain to yourself why games in the balance would not necessitate putting the best players on the field (if they are, in fact, on the sideline). RR is not going to be thinking about next year. He is going to play them as soon as they are the best option.

Don't be so secure in that. If Warren leaves he's gone after his third year, and even if we redshirt Turner, if he's as good as everyone hopes he will be, he could leave after 2011 or 2012. For that reason, if it's possible, get him on the field - there's still 6 games and a bowl for him to get experience for 2010.
