VIDEO: Scott Frost campaigning for Nebraska to jump Michigan in final 1997 poll

Submitted by Communist Football on

Something I will never forgive or forget, and neither will any other Michigan fan who followed that season:

UPDATE: For those in the comments who say "what's the big deal; he was just pulling for his team"—no. The relentless badgering of the pollsters and the media was something that only Nebraska, not Michigan, did. Maybe in this BCS/playoff era we're now accustomed to that sort of electioneering. But in those days it was considered profoundly distasteful and unsportsmanlike. You did your talking on the field, and let the pollsters make up their minds. That was the majority ethos then.

this is ridiculously stupid. Frost did what he should have done to campaign for his team. did they deserve a half NC? No. But it's stupid to sit here and bag on a guy for doing what any team captain should be doing. let it go folks, you make our fan base look ugly.

He said what any QB of an undefeated team would say.  He probably believes to this day that his team could've beaten '97 Michigan.  Charles Woodson was immensely confident they could've beaten Nebraska.  But this has more to do with both were all-in scholarship athletes than any basis in fact.  As for basis in fact, I'm very skeptical Nebraska could've beaten Michigan.  Nebraska was inconsistent whereas I've seen few teams in my lifetime dictate the game the way '97 Michigan did.

But as far as 1997 goes, I really hope no one holds against me to this day any number of the insanely stupid things I said back then.  There'd be too much to choose from and they're far less coherent than a QB who has his team's back.  I seriously doubt anyone gave a shit what he said anyway.  Coaches voted for Osbourne because he "deserved" a gold watch.

This grudge against Frost is petty and it makes the Michigan fanbase look petty.

child, you have almost reached the point that I already know I'm gonna disagree with just about anything you say... it's gonna save me a lotta time, not even reading your Crazy-Don-Brown eyes comments anymore,

By the way, if you think changing from your previous avatar to Cray Cray Coach eyes lent you some sort of gravitas - well, almost any of your comments on any recent topics woud have dispelled that anyway!

But chief among your foibles is constantly repeating "You think these young guys are dumb today?! You shoulda seen me!..."  To almost any criticism of any person under 25 from virtually any era.

So - how the Hell dumb were you?! I mean compared to now?

F**k Tom Osborne, Scott Frost, Phil Fulmer, and any apologists for their almost criminal robbery of our Undivided, Unquestioned, Undiluted National Championship of 1997!!!!!!!!!

it's totally ok to hold grudges in sports. not at all a childish thing to do (whereas I would say ending your argument with "grow the fuck up" is pretty pleeb-ish of you). Here's an incomplete list of teams or individuals I hate simply because of random thing that happened at one point and now I hate them because #reasons : st. Louis Cardinals, sf giants, Yankees, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Pittsburgh Penguins, Avalanche, Blues, Blackhawks (pretty much every original 6 team aside from the wings), New York Rangers, Indianapolis Colts, the entire NFC north except for the Lions, Cowboys, Steelers. Plus every professional team in every sport in Ohio. Plus players like LeBron, Manning, Dez Bryant, the other Manning, Crosby, the Turtle, Roy, Arod... and of course osu/msu/nd/minny. I pretty much hate the entire B1G. Plus USC, UT (both of them), FL, Louisville, UNC, UK.... UMD. I might be out. regardless, this should be normal. it's ok to hate. get over yourself.

Frost: "First off, I'm so proud of this team, I'm proud to play for Coach Osborne."

Nothing wrong with those comments.

Frost: "I just have to say this about the National Championship, if all the pollsters honestly think .... that Michigan could beat Nebraska, then go ahead and vote Michigan, by all means."

Nothing wrong here either.  He's not advocating for Nebraska here!  A lot of the pollsters did vote for Michigan, of course.

Frost: "But I don't think there's anyone out there with a clear conscious that can say that Nebraska and especially Coach Osborne, doesn't deserve a National Championship for this, at least a share."

This is advocating for Nebraska, yes.  But he did say "at least a share."  Not denegrating Michigan with this comment.

Seriously: what am I missing here?  I don't get why this 1 minute interview in particular (maybe he said something else elsewhere?) is that bad.

Yes, and if you look at how each team did against the 2 common opponents - Colorado and Baylor, we beat each by a bigger margin than nebraska did - 24 vs. 3 and 35 and 28, respectively.

I still blame peyton manning for just an abysmal showing in the Orange Bowl. Any time a volunteer fan wants to have the Heisman argument, remind them of the bowl game as well as his record vs. their main rival, no not rutgers, but florida.

I'd say the actual importance of his statements are forgettable at best. The guy just got done winning a major bowl game for a legendary coach while going undefeated. Did everyone think he was going to say "Just give it to Mich, they deserve it more than us." Probably not.

How many non Michigan fans would look at that as "incredibly distasteful"? The issues with perspective some people have is scary. Guess what? When things are left to votes, people lobby for the votes. It's kind of a rule of life. Michigan didn't lobby because we didn't think we'd have to. If Lloyd and Debord weren't their usual conservative selves against a weak Wazzou defense I doubt Frost's words would have found an audience.

My top 10 list of unforgivable people in Michigan football history:

1.  All the AD's that voted OSU to the Rose Bowl in 1973.

2.  Referees in 1979 Rose Bowl game vs USC,  Referee in 1990 MSU game (2 pt conv.)

3. Scott Frost from Nebraska

4. Spartan Bob

5. George Steinbrenner for taking Drew Henson away from us

6. Dave Brandon

7. Nick Saban (Satellite Camps)

8. Harry Oliver from Notre Dame

9. Rob Houghlin from Iowa

10. Kordell Stewart from Colorado

What the hell was he supposed to do? You're telling me a 1986 Jim Harbaugh wouldn't be doing everything he could for a edge if Michigan was in the similar situation. Regarding the lobbying, a lot of Michigan fans tell themselves it is "classy" to not do it because of the way Carr acted in 2007. Too bad most of the nation calls that being a sucker.

Never forgive that whiny fat ass bitch Phil Fulmer. He ranked us 4th and that's why we ended up in second place in the coaches poll. Nobody else had us lower than 2nd but he was still upset about Manning losing to Woodson. What a scumbag move.

By the 2nd QTR. TN defense played well. Frost and Fullman are asses! Michigan should have been the sole NC!  NE should have lost to MO, the refs really gave NE a freebee!

I am so glad you posted this - I think a lot of the negative posts were not around in 97 and don't remember the endless shilling by Scott Frost, and his tears, and announcer Jim Nantz. It was pathetic at best. Michigan got jobbed. I'm so glad you didn't forget. I hope Michigan puts 97 on UCF.
