VIDEO: Durkin's Florida Defenses (4 games)

Submitted by DGDestroys on

It seems like the name we've heard most often as a potential assistant, both from his side and the Michigan side of things, is DJ Durkin. I've asserted that he was more of the man running Muschamp's defenses than anything, but he could still bring something from that background to Michigan. Therefore, I cut up four of Florida's games from this past year for closer study. It should be noted that he also coached linebackers, so pay special attention to them.

(Sidenote: The four games were picked pretty randomly, mainly based on their availability and their format. And their not-being-EMU)

the rumored coaches with the recruits they targeted.  It might be worth a look!  There could be some undecided recruits we could land and other "soft verbal" recruits we could flip.

Will have some updates shortly with a few more coaches and will welcome your input.

Just wanted to see how the defense was under Durkin vs under the previous coordinators Dan Quinn who left after 2012 to become the Seahawks DC and Teryl Austin who left after 2010 to go to the Ravens and then Detroit.  I didn't look at personel changes but results below seem to indicate that Quinn took an OK defense and made them elite (but it took a year) and Durkin inherritted an elite defense and kept them good.  Without really talking to Florida people it's hard to know what impact the terrible offense had on the defensive stats and what personel issues there were.

Florida 2010:  S&P-35  FEI-29

Florida 2011:  S&P-35  FEI-33

Florida 2012: S&P-4  FEI-1

Florida 2013:  S&P-15  FEI-20

Florida 2014: S&P-21  FEI-8

Considering the two previous DCs went on to be successful NFL DCs would indicate that either Muschamp teaches his DCs well or knows how to pick great defensive coaches.

muschamp himself is an elite defensive coach. is it possible that the offense at florida was so bad because muschamp spent most of his time focusing on the defensive side of the ball? i think so.

I don't understand how that has anything to do with what I posted.  I mentioned the effect the crappy offense might have had on the defense but what does that have to do with Muschamp being a defensive minded coach?  There's an argument to be made that the defenses were really his and not his DC but seeing how successful the previous DCs ended up implies he either picks them well or trains them well which would both be good for Michigan if they hire Durkin.

Jim Light also has this vid from last year's Mizzou game:

They get lit up a bit here. Spent the game in Nickel/Dime in an Over playing C1/C3 plus some fire zones. Nothing real mind blowing, but one thing they don't seem to do is apex the slot. Always playing w/ outside leverage. Seem to funnel everything inside, not really a spill defense. Non-corner DBs play very deep.
