Victors Club poster: Meyer to step down

Submitted by Communist Football on

A poster at Victors Club, DChapman12, who works in "risk management" -- the discipline of helping corporations and other large institutions through legal and PR crises -- says Urban Meyer is stepping down.  Relevant quotes:

Outside Risk Management Firm on campus. Priority to protect the University. Going to take quick action to protect the University. Much bigger than football. Athletics department may see additional shake up. Gene Smith may be out as well. Expect to see quick action and PR from the University voicing a united message of intolerance.

When challenged by multiple posters as to his source, he responded:

Not connected to scoop in any significant way whatsoever. Just stumbled my way to it because of my circle involved. Any other situation outside of risk management work, I’m not a source nor do I have any sources. Hope that answers your question.

It's telling that OSU has not put out any press release thus far, nor as Urban Meyer or the OSU Athletic Department. They are all clearly going back and forth with each other, their comms people, their lawyers, and possibly this outside risk management firm to figure out how to respond.

There are several elements of the McMurphy report that are damning, aside from Urban lying at the Big Ten Media Day. (1) the fact that Smith was pressured by Meyer confidants to not press charges in 2009; (2) the fact that the 2015 incidents were common knowledge within the OSU community with no reaction; (3) the fact that Zach Smith, as Earle Bruce's grandson, likely received special treatment from Meyer and OSU. Ambitious reporters will be all over these elements of the story and possibly many others.

In a spirit of hope I'd given a little leeway that maybe he'd grown a bit in the decade(ish) since he bailed on Florida because Tebow graduated.  Based upon this unfolding of events though, unfortunately the instinct that is screaming to burn him to the ground for helping to perpetuate an atmosphere of acceptance of domestic abuse is most likely the right approach.

After the sentences have been handed out, hopefully everyone that assisted in this winds up in some sort of counseling to help stamp this out once and for all.

At the end of McMurphy's report, he quotes Courtney Smith, the ex-wife of Zach, saying her ex-husband once told her, "if he ever got fired and all this comes out, I'll take everyone at Ohio State down with me."

Interesting thought from TheBadOwl at Eleven Warriors as to why Urban lied at Media Day -- if Urban admitted that he knew about the incident in 2015, and didn't report it to the university, he and his wife are guilty of federal Title IX violations, which would be a fireable offense:

Legally speaking, he (and Shelley) should have reported it to the university. Neither did.

As university employees (which both are), knowing of a potential incident of that nature and failing to report it to the university is a violation of Title IX, which means that the university (and their status within it) is now in deep shit.

That actually could explain why he lied at media days, too. If he'd caught wind of the incident (which it looks like he had) and failed to report it (never investigated), that'd be admitting a Title IX violation. At that point, his only option was likely to pretend he didn't know and hope that Courtney wasn't going to provide proof that he did.

Seeing Urban deny knowing about it on such a huge stage was probably the last straw for Courtney – especially after she put so much of her trust in Shelley – which is likely why she did the McMurphy interview and now this one on Stadium.

Taking a denial at face value – especially after knowing of the 2009 incident – and not actually doing due diligence (or finding someone who can) is incredibly negligent on Urban's part, and it looks like it's catching up to him, whether or not it ends in him losing his job.

Nope not happening. Meyer will get a pass just like Izzo and Dantini. Now if there was some extra stretching that could be a serious scandal.

This seems like a nice, predictable "snide" answer. And I don't expect Urban to be let go.

But if he were to leave, assuming there isn't a pile of "take the program down" bad publicity that follows him out, this actually seems like the most reasonable scenario. I don't expect Urban to stay out of coaching. If he sits out this season to pay his "penance" and OSU gets a new coach, Notre Dame actually seems like exactly the scenario that would pick him back up.

Yeah, ND talks about higher standards, but: 1. They have Brian Kelly as their coach right now. 2. They care about winning, and Urban would unquestionably be the best chance they have to do that. 3. They have plenty of publicity options to make this sound like a redemption story.

If Urban gets fired, he instantly becomes the hot name this December. Notre Dame will have a hard time justifying not taking him if BK isn't excellent, given that if they don't take him, a school like LSU will.

Urban isn't going anywhere. He might get suspended for a game or two and reprimanded, and OSU will put on a dramatic press conference in which Meyer, Gene Smith  and whoever else they trot out will insist that they have zero tolerance for violence against women and that abusers have no place at OSU. The situation will blow over and be promptly forgotten in six months

I don’t understand how you, your wife(paid admin for OSU) act like a confidant, but dismiss her only because it’s about winning fucking football games!

I don’t have the link, but I recall OSU posting Motos in their locker room about treating women right!
