The VaTech & Boise unis..

Submitted by natesezgoblue on

I didnt think I'd like them but when I turned the game game on I did a complete 180.  Not saying I'd like to see our guys wearing the proc combats but it would be interesting to see some mock-ups.  I dont think I'd really mind changing the uni's just not the helmets.

Why do some people on the blog have such a stick up their butts about consolidating content? Yes, repetitive threads can get annoying, but people are such turds to people who do this. And this isn't even the same topic as those two threads. Those two are talking about football, this on is talking about uniforms

I hate them. I am so glad we have a program with tradition and won't ever have to see something like that in the big house. I don't like either teams. I didn't mind TCU's the other night, but VaTech shouldn't have that much black and no maroon, and Boise St. doesn't have enough orange and just look terrible. I hope the alternate/throwback uni thing stops here and doesn't go crazy like the NFL/NBA.

I can't say that I hate either teams unis but I don't love them either.  Boise State's grey on the uniform looks more like sweat than a design.  I also don't love the tech components in the numbers on VT but it works with the rest of the uniform.

I have to say that I would never want to see the Michigan home uniform changed.  I love the classic Maize and Blue.  Its very hard to improve on perfection.

Boise State's unis are just terrible.  Their pants hurt my eyes on my HD TV.  The microchip patterning on VaTech's numbers is beyond strange.  The color on VaTech's shoes looks like something my dog pooped our after eating an orange candy wrapper...

all around terrible.

The numbers really are the worst thing about them. I am having a hard time getting over how bad they look. And the thing is, how many people approved of them before they actually put them on tonight? Multiple folks at Nike, perhaps several people at Va Tech. And, there had to be folks in both places who thought they looked terrible, but were too afraid to say anything.

College football does not need this shit to 'spice it up' - it is inherently dynamic, inherently great. It does not need these cheap gimmicks. In fact, I would argue that the inherent variation and unpredictability means that we need stability in other aspects - which is why we love tradition. These are just gaudy and cheap - they are the 'jersey shore' of college uniforms.

Ok, I'm done.

My thought exactly, about multiple people signing off on them.  I found it really baffliing because they truly were terrible looking....  I cannot think of any aesthetic sensibility according to which those uniforms would be considered appealing.  And the fact someone designed those, thought, "This looks good!" and that not just one person - but multiple people - agreed, makes me scratch my head and go, "What the hell?"

As much as I sing Nike's praises about other things, I completely agree that these uniforms were truly hideous.  They never should have made their way out of a brainstorming session, let alone onto the field.

(P.S. -  The one thing I did like out of those uni's were Va. Tech's helmets.  i thought that kind of matte finish to them, with the glossy stripes and VT logo was kinda cool, but only as a novelty, not something that should actually be used in games.)

If we play a monday night prime time game and addidas wants to do that to our uni's, I'd say we decline. From VT's shoes to their matte finish helmuts, no maroon, that's ugly.

I think a uniform is part of the team identity, maybe it's only symbolic, but I prefer stability in a uniform. I like to know who is playing when I tune in a game. Although, I can understand tweaking over the years. With that said, Boise's look ok, VT looks terrible. A weird combination of Halloween and Tron. At least stick with the school colors. Nike needs to stay off of my lawn.

Boise's look like bad practice jerseys, and their blue socks and shoes are hideous.  I turned on the game and immediately thought I was watching the XFL.

They're ridiculously bad. You don't just go and completely change the color of your entire jersey like that. Even if they play in Blacksburg. Boise's are ok, but I think both are way over the top.

is just goofy, let alone messing with the design.

But then again, everyone on this board is used to consistently  winning over a long time and looking the same while doing it, so its hard to understand messing with that.

These uniforms are what happens when designers are given too much creativity.  They're defeating the purpose of the uniform in the first place.  If you can't read the numbers, they fail, regardless of how interesting or aesthetically complex the graphics are inside them.

(And for what it's worth, this comment is courtesy from a fellow graphic designer).

I think it would be really cool to see what pro combat could do with Michigan's jerseys for one game. I know a lot of traditionalists disagree with me, and that's okay, but I think it'd be cool as a one-or-two-time thing. I like variety and putting the winged helmet on top of a crazy uniform would be cool in my opinion. I really love the two-toned numbers that teams like Miami and Va Tech have on their pro combats. But we have Adidas so this is probably a moot point. I'm happy with the ones we've got, other than the ridiculous way that they fit our players. I'm no fashion engineer, but that seems like it should be pretty easy to fix

the Va Tech Uniforms are sick plain as that. They are probably the coolest Pro Combat ones ive seen. ( Mizzou's are also preetty cool looking).

while boise's arnt anything special to me. i dont like their helmets at all.

both of them, but would never want to see them on Michigan, although I'm sure Nike could do some 'cool' stuff.

I like VT's non-shiny black helmets along with the all black look, and Boise's look like the away version of the Thanksgiving jersey the Lions wear, the bronco on one side of the helmet is pretty darn sweet.

Overall, for the look they're going for, Nike did a good job. NEVER will these be worn by a Michigan team however, and rightfully so.

It kinda looks like an XFL game. Not a good thing. I like the VTech unis from a distance, but every time they show a cllose up of the weird patterns on the numbers and the sleeves, it just kinda falls apart. They look like cyborg ninjas from the future. Boise States unis are just a random assemblage of bad-looking shit into one amateurish, awkward whole. Ah, Nike... Now that I think about it, they kind of look like those weird uniforms you see for the made-up teams in movies/series like Any Given Sunday or Playmakers. The Miami Sharks!
