Valenti is actually worth listening to

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

He's currently ripping Izzo on 97.1 and saying that Beilein has passed him as a coach. I've got my popcorn ready.

but he's also a smart guy.  I can't stand him when he talks CFB and I don't care enough about the pro game to listen to talk on the subject.  He and I have very similar thoughts on the Tigers though.

He used have this massive inferiority complex regarding Michigan back when MSU's football team sucked. Now that they're good, he's much more reasonable. The day Harbaugh was hired he spent the day telling his MSU callers that they're delusional if they expect Dantonio to just own Harbaugh like he did Rich Rod and Hoke.

I remember back in '07 or '08 when Valenti said he wasn't even going to go to the MSU/UM game anymore. Kind of lost a little respect for him when he did that for the reasons he gave. I've moved out of state since and haven't listened in a ling time.

Unless we miss the tourney, then he'll go on a rant about UM and MSU basketball is awful, and a joke compared to other National Programs. And all the idiots will call in to argue, and 97.1's ratings will skyrocket

Save yourselves the frustration.

Dude is nothing but a troll, inciting anger and frustration in listeners in an attempt to get them to call his station.  If he had a competent co-host, it might be a better show.  Unfortunately, his co-host sucks.

Don't do it.

I stopped listening last year and I'm glad I did.

he's still fairly schizophrenic; you can listen for a few minutes and tell pretty quickly if he's in "act like a reasonable person" mode or "full-blown troll" mode

those are the only two options

The guy is an entertainer to get ratings. whichever side gives him the better ratings he plays. Its that simple

Foster just goes along with the schtick.

He's replied to me on Twitter when I sorta called him out/asked him why always Michigan talke when something is up and almost never Michigan State talk, unless it's very positive news. He said because Michigan sells. State fans don't call in one way or another about MSU topics apparently.. and if he talks Michigan.. Michigan fans call in, and troll MSU fans call in.

So I get his gimmick, it's smart business-wise. But damn if it isn't annoying. I don't listen nearly as much as I used to from about 2008-2012. I can maybe handle 20 mins here and there.

Side note... Pat Caputo is by far THE worst guy at the station in any time slot. Not even close.

My general disdain for Pat Caputo goes all the way back to his days doing Tigers' pregame on PASS (remember PASS, fellow metro Detroiters?) and "Caputo's Corner". Even twenty five years ago, the constant droning and lackluster analysis was just too much and now when I am driving on weekends, I will pass right by 97.1 during the middle of the day because of him.

Doc Brown

oh god, Caputo is the WORST radio personality in this state. He absolutely refuses to do any sort of critical think. When callers prove him wrong, Caputo refuses to acknowledge their points. Instead he will throw a temper tantrum on the air, hang up on the caller, and start insulting their intelligence for daring to challenge his argument. At least Valenti will admit when he is wrong. Yeah, Valenti can be an ass hat, but he is pretty funny about it.

I also can't stand Huge. That bandwagon blowhard refuses to take a stance on anything.

He's tolerable, but sensationalist. Absolutley cringe worthy when he talks about political issues that he has no understanding of.

But spot on about how the majority of people are absolute idiots.

I agree with most of his takes regarding Detroit Pro sports (Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons) but usually have to change the dial when he gets into MSU/UofM stuff.

he was talking about how V Mart was a bust and the Tigers should move him. This was in a May when he got off to a slow start. His knowledge seems commensurate with the typical serious fan, with their same tendency to overreact to everything. He seems far short of an expert in anything, except for antagonizing Michigan fans.

Every NHL trade deadline they say the same thing. Holland has lost it because he can't make a trade for Shea Weber and we should get rid of Babcock because free agents don't wanna play for him. I remember back in 2007, they were mocking Holland for signing Dallas Drake, even though they ended up winning the Cup with him.

I have mixed feelings on Valenti.  On the one hand, he is a very knowledgeable sports talk guy with, I believe, a love for most things sports related.  On the other hand, he's very much a troll and a Sparty. Also, when Foster is on, the show is unbearable.  I'm pretty sure he doesn't even watch sports.

I just realized that Valenti is the guy who provided us with one of the all-time greatest rants on sports radio - the one that occurred on the show after MSU blew that game against Notre Dame.

Lol Valenti is going in on Izzo right now. I love the Beilein praise.

"Their point guard (Walton) is playing like Blackbeard on a peg and they're still winning"

Beilein changes; Izzo doesn't

hahaha wow. Priceless.

All Valenti does is be negative on a subject. Lions,  U of M, the occasional Sparty railing to seem fair. ETC ETC.

This gets listeners mad so they call in to argue against what he says. A few call in and kiss his ass and agree with him. " Yes Mike, you tell it like it is " Blah Blah Blah

They say how he gets it , yada yada yada. Agree with him. Terry usually agrees . Rinse repeat. Can anyone ever remember something positive or any kind of insite into anything he has ever shared??   I would love to hear if anyone can say yes they have .

In 2010, he said that only two coaches would scare him if Michigan hired them.  One was Urbz and the other Harbaugh.  When Hoke was hired, he basically threw a party for four hours on the air.

I would recommend listening to Valenti when Foster is on vacation.  He sticks straight to sports and none of the other garbage like local politics or what's on the police blotter.

Do I love Valenti?  Nope.  But he's sadly the best we got in Detroit.  If you want to compare, listen to 105.1 during the same time slot.  That is a clown show.

Why does he think Beilien has passed Izzo? I suspect he's talking BS because the teams play this weekend and if MSU wins, which is most likely since the game is at their place and we're insanely young,, he can fall back later with some condescending remark about Izzo not being good but he can still beat Michigan, or something stupid like that.

Valenti is a rude, bombastic, egomaniacal blowhard.  I'd rather pour muratic acid in my ears than listen to him.

It doesn't take a genius to know Beilein is a much better coach than Izzo.

"Mark Sanchez is going to be a much better QB that Matt Stafford."    How can any of you folks listen to sports talk radio?  The old retired guys at my gym are far more knowledgable as are majority of MGBLOG posters.

lilpenny1316

He's an opinion talker, not a former player or athlete that has this inherent sports knowledge advantage over most of us.  So he's going to be wrong, just like we're wrong sometimes.  I just listen to him because I don't have Sirius anymore and cannot stand a silent car during rush hour.

Doc Brown

Stafford sucks. He is easily the most overrated QB in the league next to Eli Manning. The Lions would easily won the division if they were getting decent QB play. Instead they are stuck with Stafford, who blows.
