Utah Game Time -- Any Guesses?

Submitted by ChalmersE on

I suspect the Utah game time won't be announced for another couple of weeks, but I'm being asked about my availability for an event that day. I pulled up the B1G schedule for that day and would be very surprised if it weren't a 3:30 game, especially given that Utah is in the Mountain Time Zone.  Anyone else have a view?

Not to mention, it gives you a chance to actually watch the 3:30 games, which is where about half of the games worth watching are now.  I know that everyone is sick of hearing about the SEC, but last year they had some of the most incredible and exciting games that I have ever seen, and anyone attending a 3:30 game didn't get to see them spoiler-free.

The Big Ten games haven't been slotted other than Nebraska hosting Miami(YTM) at 7pm for that day.  Even then they haven't picked a station yet.

ABC/ESPN/BTN choices

Eastern Michigan at Michigan State

Bowling Green at Wisconsin

Indiana at Missouri  (look for that one to fill an SEC time slot)

Iowa at Pittsburgh

Maryland at Syracuse

Southern Illinois at Purdue

Texas State at Illinois

UMASS at Penn State

Utah at Michigan

Depending on how Utah starts,  ABC could pick Michigan/Utah as the most compelling game that draws viewers.  Key to remember Alabama hosts Florida that day, most likely will be the CBS 3:30 game, so ABC will looking for a big national draw.  Iowa and Maryland won't cut it, and the rest of the BIG slate that day is pretty much garbage.

I say 3:30 on ABC

If those are the only choices no way UM Utah is not the 3:30 PM game. That is a horrid slate aside from maybe Pitt/Iowa.  Indiana Missouri would probably be entertaining but not something you put as your national draw.

OSU has a bye that week.

Doesn't ABC/ESPN also do Big 12 though? i.e. they could put UM at noon and then do an Oklahoma or Texas game as 3:30?

has a lot of flexibility when it comes to slotting games.

Alot of times it comes down to which timeslot they want to be a national broadcast vs picking 3 or 4 regional games (they also have the ACC, PAC12).

They may go Texas Oklahoma as the National game that day, but they've had that kickoff at noon before which would make 330 their regional games.  I don't think its a slam dunk Michigan gets picked for the regional game.

I also think BTN has some weeks where they can pick games first, this might be the week ABC/ESPN lets BTN have first pick and show Maryland or Iowa as the regional game.

I hope it's noon. I love the early games. It's nice to sleep in a little bit and have just enough time to get ready for some Michigan football. All games should be at noon.

3pm. Michigan will win the next 3 weeks. This makes them more compelling. TV drives everything (well, TV money.) As such, ABC will choose Michigan for the late afternoon game.

Noon starts will only happen with a combination of things.

  • Late in the season.
  • When there are other compelling Big10 games.
  • When Michigan is doing very poorly, and no one wants to watch them.

Since I don't anticipate Michigan losing, and the slate of other games is putrid, and it isn't late in the season, you can pretty much guarantee a 3pm start.

I would put the chances of the Utah game being the 3:30 game at about 99.99%.  Even if it is the Big Ten's "B" game, it will still be at 3:30, like Indiana last year.

The 12:00 time slot is pretty much dead.  And it is a tragedy.
