US Army Game Review: Aidan Hutchison

Submitted by pkatz on
Good news on one of our 2018 recruits... at this point I’ll take anything positive on Michigan football: A+ Grade: Aidan Hutchison, DE (Michigan): Though Caden Sterns was officially named the MVP of the game, it was Hutchison who made the biggest overall impact. The future Wolverine had two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and at least three other plays on which he ripped through the offensive line like it wasn't even there.  EDIT: apologies on the formatting from the mobile app

I just don’t get the thinking around here. There are several posts saying “I hope he redshirts”. I’m not arguing whether he will or should or whatever, but if he can play, then who gives a flying fuck? It still amazes me that people around here still think it is 1974 and freshman and hell, sometimes even sophomores shouldn’t play. We should be rooting for him to come in and kick ass and get on the field. I don’t care if he takes Gary’s spot. If he is better, who cares? Again, for you literal folks out there, I’m not saying he is better than Gary, I’m just saying that hoping a good player doesn’t play his dumb.

We need ballers. Don't care what class they are in. It is time to win now. Enough of the "but we can save him" mentality. These games hinge on like a couple of plays. Play dudes who bring it every time. Like Chase, Mo, etc. We need dogs, d-o-g-s. Guys who fight like hell whether up 20 or down 10. No more scoreboard watchers.

For you and guy above. 1) we think 5he best players should play. 2) we assume Gary and Kemp are better players. 3) therefore, wed like a red shirt over a few scattered snaps. Those who see Hutch as better than Kemp are dumb, willfully ignorant, or misguided.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think anyone was quite saying that they hope he doesn't play. I think the idea is more that, right now, he's in the mix with Rashan, who is by all means a DUDE, and Kemp, who has been striving for DUDE status since preseason per Don Brown, amongst others who are well ahead of him in S&C and have been here a year or more to learn schemes and rep. I think we all would rather he contribute early if he is I'm fact that good. Most are just trying to be realistic about the talent pool and longevity and how to shake things out. Also, if he is openly admitting he is close to 240, he's quite a ways away from being big enough to hold down the line. Therefore, he would benefit greatly from some nutrition and S&C to help fill out.

In most cases a potential 5th year for a player is much more valuable than a freshmen getting snaps. Hurst this season and Winovich next season vs Higdon leaving after this upcoming season due to a handful of carries his freshmen year. O'Maury Samuels is another dude who basically wasted a year of eligibility. Hutch getting limited snaps at a crowded position now vs a potential full season of him starting as an improved player later.

No need to feel offended but Hutch needs a minimum of 25 lbs and probably more before he is strong enough to play in the BIG. If he can go in and compete at his current weight of 240 then he’d be pretty freaky.

Should he prove he's good enough to play. The best shall rise to the top of the depth chart.

But I wouldn't use today's showing as a benchmark.

HIgh school means little once he steps on that practice field in August. He's no way the backup at any point half way through the first half of next season. Not with Brown and Mattison coaching this group up for however long already. Redshirt for shizzle, won't need him next year. This defensive line is cracking skulls starting in South Bend. Boom that all you biznatchle trolls reading this very comment and suck deez too!

This young man Hutch showed a motor, great bull rush, good change of direction, and just overall intelligence. He should've been MVP my opinion, but they went with guy who got 2 INTs. I am actually getting pumped for this incoming class. Lower hype. Lots of guys who appear to be "dogs" and just players. We need maulers and dudes who just bring it every time.

Lets pump the brakes a little, next year is not his year but for a high schooler against some of the top talent in the country I thought he looked great.  But we have depth and he is just adding to it and making the future look bright. Just like Wormley and Taco did for Gary and Winovich they can take him under their wings. Vilian and Paye are supposed to be legit

East team o line wasn't up to par, but he still dominated a la Gary in the UA game. That's BIG. Like almost every play I watched him, he's shedding blocks or in the back field. We are so so talented on defense...praying we don't squander this in next 2 seasons on our 1980s plod and fraud offense. Need a reboot there...think it is coming.

from watching the best Uber driver in A2 be #2 on the depth chart. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that it might happen again. In fact, in this case I'm perfectly happy going with whatever Don Brown and Associates feel is right for young Mr. Hutchinson. I'll support the starting (insert position here) regardless of what his name is.

His father needed a wheelbarrow to take home his team awards, and those included scholastic honors. I can't wait to see Aidan start writing his own chapter on and off the field.

I just loved his motor, his powerful hands, his strength. All around hyped for this guy. I am tired of starz and while I get their relevance and correlation to winning, it was so great to see this "four star" dominate the best. I want to see hunger...like the famine we see from Msu players every year. That's what we need. This guy fits the bill.

Anyone asserting whether or not he plays next year based on this game and any of the limited play we saw from DL back-ups this year is fooling themselves.

He played great.  Has elite length, and seems to have great agility for that size, and an undeniable motor.  This is great.  What that means for next year is unknown for everyone in this board.

Doesn't have the same ceiling (though who truly knows) but all I'm saying...he dominated like Gary did the UA game 3 years ago. Man against boys. These "boys" are evaluated as 4 and 5 star o line recruits. Hutch dominated them. In a real game. Do I think he's Gary? No...but this performance was on par. And future is blazing bright.

It's just too early, but yes this was an eye opener. I say what I did above as much for those guaranteeing a redshirt. sure he needs to add some strength, but arms and legs that long often have added strength built-in.  And sure the coaches like Kemp, but we haven't seen enough of him to say he's going to block all comers.

Now that Hutchison had this game, there's some stories of his he was giving Brey Walker fits all week.

Good for him. He has a great coach, and some great mentors. Hope he makes the best of his opportunity. Don't think he can bull rush people like that at the next level, but looks like a promising strong side end.

Is this your own opinion or did an analyst write this?

Since I got tickets to the game (West team long snapper plays for my HS and I wanted to support a fellow classmate) I got to witness it firsthand. Hutchinson was flat out dominant and made some great plays in the backfield.

Athough we pretty much had no shot at him, James Cook (Dalvin’s younger brother, committed to UGA) would’ve been crazy for this class. Dude looked dynamic out there.
