Urban Meyer Thread -- Wednesday, 23 Nov

Urban Meyer quoted by ESPN 12/23:

I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place. I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further.

Of course, this is Urban's secret code language for "I've called up Hernia Movers and they'll be at my front door on Monday."

Yet Central Ohio News 10tv.com confirms Meyer has accepted job: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7272658/urban-meyer-deni…

Mod Edit: We're going to do the thread consolidation thing again. This is your Urban Meyer thread for today. The only additional threads allowed are seriously new news. If a reliable news source (not Joe Schaad, Deadspin, or Sports by Brooks) says there will be an official announcement, then create a new thread. [zl]

Wounder if there is some clause in his ESPN contract that will make him ride out the year thru bowl season.  While this reminds me alot of the last 2 coaching searching we have had, what "three and out" has taught me there is truth to this smoke even if there is no offical confirmation.

I'm sure Meyer will end up at OSU. I'm wondering if there have been any NCAA violations since Adolphus Washington was convinced Meyer would be the coach next year.

When a coach gets hired as an analyst i'm positive there is an out if they are offered any coaching job they might want. I can't wait to start Urbans Osu- michigan record at 0-1 next year. Seriously thinking OSU might kill Urban Meyer if Florida made him sick

So, this info came across the ticker during Mike and Mike this morning.  THE VERY NEXT ITEM was "Breaking news: according to source (station in orlando), Urban Meyer has signed a 7 year contract to become the head coach at Ohio State."

Sorry for no link- I haven't found one yet.

This is actually a brilliant move by the OSU AD's office (can't believe I just typed that).  Meyer is a golden child of college football - winner of numerous NCs, considered by the masses to be a "good guy" (hell, he cried about his Tim Tebow love during a presser), evena family man.  He is as close to squeeky clean in image as a wildly successful SEC coach can be.

By bringing him in, OSU is not only landing a top notch recruiter and coach (which will keep its name bring high during any period of sanctions or rebuilding), but it is landing someone who the NCAA will be less likely to want to smack down.

I have said this over and over.  I want the penalties to sting but not kill ohio.  I want the penalties to come after this bowl season.  2 year bowl ban and loss of 15-20 scholarships over 3 years.  I want them to bounce back and be strong so we can have historic battles between hoke and the next coach at ohio.

I disagree. He is not squeaky clean, I have a good OSU friend who is apalled at the idea of Urban Meyer being their next coach. While at Florida, his players had over 30 arrests, that is about 1 for every 2 games he won. This does not include "incidents" in which arrests were not made. I think he is a disaster waiting to happen. If they really wanted squeaky clean, they would hire Glenn Mason and have him on board for 5yrs until all the trouble is cleared up and then bring in their favored young coach.

Agree. OSU's best course is easily biting the bullet and spending the next few years in line. This will lend to them having the speediest recovery. If they pull in shady coaches and recruits all over again, it will just perpetuate the trouble they're in now. Instead of sticking around the house, grounded for two weeks, they'll just keep sneaking out the window. Mom and Dad are bound to find out, and send them to private school...

I don't think this matters at all.  If all you had to do to get out of sanctions was to fire the cheating coach and hire a "clean"  one, everyone may as well cheat.

Besides, if we got nailed with a postseason ban and scholarship losses when we had Tommy Amaker (as squeaky-clean as it gets) coaching our basketball program, why would OSU be any different?

This information is being distributed by ESPN, not Urban Meyer.  This is not a press release from the coach in question.... it is from his current employer.

seems to mainly be a TV station in Florida and hopeful Buckeye insiders.

I think the hope is from the perceived mutual interest.  A deal could be coming, but they would never negotiate behind Fickell's back.

So, no deal in principal or otherwise, but they are likely to reach one later.

I know this is big-boy football but Meyer comes off like a douche if he is seen as working behind the scenes when Fickell still has the job and no annoucement has been made.

Could be a nice rallying cry for Fickell to get the Bucks wound up for the game.

This has been my fear all week.  All things being equal, I think we win this game.  And yes, we will be fired up.  But I have visions of Fickell giving the whole, "boys, who knows where we will all be next year.  There's a good chance that this will be the last game that we will play as a team, the team that Jim Tressel built and that we are continuing.  Next year, things will be different, there will be a new, shiny coach in town, and who knows what direction this team will go in.  But right now, we are still a team, so let's go out there as a team and kick M's ass, and go out with a bang."  Who knows, these types of things tend to happen more in movies, but I still get choked up when I hear Bo's "the team, the team, the team" speach.  Here's hoping that Fickell doesn't have a speach like that in him.

Apparently Luke helped recruit Urban to OSU. Luke is on record, early this season as saying something along the lines of, "I hate dealing with the media part of the HC job, you do all the same work as a DC or Asst Coach, you just don't have the media obligations." Plus Luke isn't your ego maniac type that he has to keep the HC job to save face or whatever. It's plausible.

Colin Cowherd is saying it's a done deal, so you know it's true!  He's also claiming that Urban Meyer will dominate the B1G.  This is not an RR bash, but Cowherd claimed that he would dominate the B1G at Michigan with his spread offense.  I think Cowherd has multiple personality disorder and none of them knows anything about sports.  Bring on Urban, Ohio police need to beef up their arrest numbers.

Still I dont know how he could go there or any coach would go before knowing something about what the NCAA is going to do. 7 years and 40 mill is nice but a 2 or 3 year bowl ban and a double digit loss of scholies would keep people away.

Urban Meyer could have any open job in the country if he wanted. The difference here is that Meyer has a legacy to protect and alot more to lose if things dont work out. Someone who has not been as successful like saaaaaay . . . Dantonio would be ripe for jumping on it as he has really maxed out what MSU will probably be.
