Unofficial/"My Best Guess" 2014 Fall Depth Chart

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

A few of notes...

  1. This is based off the final 2013 depth chart, natural progression, the spring depth chart and fall chatter
  2. This isn't projecting "by the B1G season" or where guys finish the year
  3. This thread isn't about my opinion...feel free to add your own! What we've done in the past is sort of moderated ourselves and come up with our own MGoPrediction until the official depth chart is released (so based on discussion in the thread, parts of this will change to reflect the group)

I just dont think they can do this when he is always one hard hit on Gardner away from getting in the game, I think we agree Speight and Bellomy arent options so you have to have Morris ready to play at all times. If Gardner goes down in the middle of game 7, you would feel much more confident with Morris if he played series in say 3 to 5 of the prior games as opposed to never stepping on the field. To do this, you have to play him right away. He will play against App St.

But that would be arguing to burn Speight's redshirt just for the purpose of trying to hold out Shane to get one? The quotes from today have him battling Bellomy for third spot so I dont think that this year he will be the guy you want in there if Gardner goes down,

and then join the chorus of folks yelling at Hoke for not being prepared if Gardner goes down - a guy who runs 10-15x (min a game) absorbing way more hits than most college QBs.

We have plenty of QBs and no one knows if Shane will be better than Speight or Malzone or anyone.  You don't sit your backup the entire year assuming your starter will never take a hit.  Then you have Bellomy 2.0 with a guy who is ill prepared to go in mid game at any point this year when the coach is under pressure to win.  You don't play for 2017, you play for now.  2017 will have 3 other QBs to deal with.

But getting Wilton Speight this year, Alex Malzone next year, and Messiah DeWeaver the year after (assuming of course that both those younger guys keep their verbal commitments) negates the argument(s) for trying to use Bellomy as the backup this year to have Shane for three years.  I'd love to have a great starting QB have three years, but given the expectations of the team in '15 with the returning talent, home schedule, etc, it's not worth jeoparding it to have Morris do nothing in a game in '14.

The pro-style QB depth is getting to where most schools want it, where you don't have to play games to keep guys eligible b/c you aren't sure of who's coming in after them.

I think Marshall plays this year and doesn't redshirt. Kid weighed in at 247 at 6'4" this week. Compare that to the freshman weights of Clark at 225lbs. and Ojemudia at 220lbs. respectfully. Taco will play the other DE spot.

The depth, talent, and youth of this team is a testament to Brady Hoke and his staff. Michigan football is in good hands.

That's the question Hoke & Co are going to have to answer this season and next (assuming Hoke is here in '15 which I do).  I don't ride the emotional roller coaster of individual recruits and where they go, but I do look at classes in their entirety and see the other offers recruits got.  Not only did Hoke do a wonderful job of getting OL to sign in 2012-13, he's clearly getting talented kids to come to AA despite offers from other prestigious schools with more recent success.  (Didn't Weber's verbal move UM into 1st for average star rating for '15?)

No one doubts Hoke's ability to recruit.  Now he has to develop the players.  He's got two well respected coordinators.  We'll see this year about his OL coach and his decision to have a former LB coach the CBs.

UM recruiting seems to be in great hands.  Now we'll see if those same hands can develop those recruits to contribute to UM football.

Despite his injury and relative dearth of recruiting stars in comparison to the others in his position group, I think Johnson will be the #1 starting running back. The coaches regularly hint at really liking Johnson, and they have done so for a long time now. And he's a beastman hurdle-record-beating athlete whose senior season --with nearly 2,800 yds and 37 or so TDs-- came close to topping the state recordbooks. I think we will be pleasantly surprised with Drake this season.

Funny that last year everyone was high on Drake Johnson as the potential starter b/c Fitz had fallen out of favor with many fans (myself included.)  Now there's a tremendous about of skepticism about him not just because of the injury, but because of the national attention on the recruitment of Derrick Green and because of the rising stock of De'Veon Smith.

Miller over Kugler:

This seems to be the conventional wisdom but I am praying to Jesus that it isn't true.  If it is true, then it means that Kugler is nowhere near as talented or college ready as he was made out to be, and the center position is going to be in very shaky hands for a while.  I made the remark in another thread that Miller is the center equivalent of Nick Sheridan and Kugler is the center equivalent of Tate Forcier.  The coaches have made remarks about Kugler's strength and power, but he would have to be really bad off to be worse than Miller in that department, as Miller looked physically overmatched against everyone.

I've posted this a couple times, so apologies to those reading it again...

Kugler came to AA college football ready from a technique and knowledge standpoint.  He played for one of Pennsylvania's best high school coaches and obviously was tutored by his father, a former NFL O-Line coach.  I bet if you put him up against Miller and Glasgow, Kugler can recognize defenses better, make better presnap calls and play with better technique.

Where those two guys have an advantage is in strength.  Kugler didn't come to AA benching 400 pounds and squatting 800.  He had some ground to gain in the strength department both against his competitors on the OL and against his own potential.  Then the labrum/cuff tear in his shoulder set him back even a bit more.  Miller and Glasgow are both two years older and injury free.

I'm with you though, I'd rather see him ahead of Miller as I was as disappointed in him as anyone.  In most years, it's a nonissue that a RS Freshman OLineman is behind two guys two years older than him.  As much as I'd love to see Kugler starting against App St. while Glasgow serves his suspension, I'll at least understand why if it doesn't happen, and hesitate to argue that the recruiting reports were wrong and/or that he is/may be a bust.
