"Learn on the fly"? He's been working with Harbaugh since the beginning of 2015: 31 months. I'm not saying the light still can't go on for him, but the odds are decreasing, not increasing.

Nine games: That will, as I mentioned, have us on the outside of the playoffs looking in and sitting home on December 2.

Barrett and Hurts have other talents that Speight does not.

You don't have to like it, but if you go back and watch the last four games of the season you'll be reminded of what happens when a QB who isn't a consistent threat to run also isn't a threat to throw down the field. We were losing to Indiana at halftime...

We'll check back in December. I hope Speight gets it together and/or I'm wrong.

Yep. Just watched that game yesterday. Same issue: No deep threat. Indiana D crept closer and closer to the line. Ten in the box. We were losing at halftime. To Indiana. We took the lead in the 3rd and no one scored in the 4th. It was ugly.

as he was injured against Iowa and didn't play at all against IU.

O'Korn took every snap in the IU game (and was pretty bad).

Michigan Passing
C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR
John O'Korn 7/16 59 3.7 0 0 22.8
TEAM 7/16 59 3.7 0 0 --

O'Korn did have a nice run late in the game though:

O'Korn's best play was a 30-yard run, escaping a collapsed pocket on third down to set up Smith's shifty, 34-yard run on the next snap that put the Wolverines up 13-10 with 4:02 left in the third. Smith's 39-yard run later in the quarter made it 20-10.

I think that if you as a fan are going to explain away Michigan's 3 game losing streak with Speight as QB1 as a result of injury, then you also have to explain away O'Korn's poor performance as a product of the weather, right?

And if you're going to blow the "no excuses" horn with Speight, you also have to do the same with O'Korn, no?

what we need is to pull a defender out of the box to get a numbers advantage. Barrett and Hurt are runners, so they negate the extra defender. last year, when it was. Lear our deep passing wasn't working, defenses stacked the box. because Speight isn't a running QB, that gave defenses an advantage our Oline couldn't overcome. to combat this, we are changing our offense to 4 WR which will take that defender out of the box. it SHOULD get the run game going better and/or give Speight more time. it's really not a matter of passing vs running as it is getting a numbers advantage, and we played with a disadvantage many times last year.

QB: (Like most) I've been saying all along that this competition thing is about motivation and focus. HB: This is pointless to worry about. Higdon and Evans are different backs and both are going to play plenty depending on the formation/situation. They're both going to see a ton of snaps. Isaac is the real news. We need him to be a legit starting RB. Not worried about Walker, the 4th RB is never going to see a ton of carries. FB: No surprise. Just wonder how many snaps the position will get with more 4 WR sets. WR: THIS is where the intrigue is at for me on offense. So much youth. Need more updates!! TE: Bunting and Wheatley...we know this. OL: Cole-Bredeson-Kuglar... Coaches are giving Onwenu every shot to be the rock at RG but I wasn't impressed during the spring game. I would assume Runyan, JBB, and the two freshman are in the mix. I expect a lot of run left like the Jake Long days. DL: Been saying it for months...stay healthy and they may be BETTER. It's good to hear the 2nd team is developing into a starting unit. LB: Bush is just so much more athletic than Gedeon...McCray is back and Hudson can do some Peppers like things. I think the real advantage is this 2nd team will be head and shoulders better than last year's 2nd team. CB: Like WR on offense...IMO this is where all the news should be. Are Hill and Long ready? Who is starting at NB? So many questions. S: No surprise. I'm watch Kinnel make a huge TFL versus Maryland as we speak. IMO he can be better than Dymonte (who improved a ton last year). Metellus got some great experience last year but I worry about him in coverage. Delano did such a great job in coverage late in his career. Good news on the K/P situatipn. Would love to see Oliver Martin, David Long, Walker, and McDoom in the return game. Maybe DPJ on punts if he's head and shoulders the best option.

I'm a jerkoff because you don't know that two 5th year seniors named Khalid Hill and Henry Poggi are back? Both started games last year. One of which became a fan favorite and scored like 8 TDs last year. I feel like you're joking and it's going over my head. What am I missing? I didn't name anyone on the DL either. You know about Rashan Gary and Mo Hurst? Edit: Here...since I'm such an ass. QB: Speight RB: Evans/Higdon FB: Hill WR: ??? (Camp battle) TE: Bunting/Wheatley LT: Cole LG: Bredeson C: Kuglar RG: ??? (Camp battle) RT: ??? (Camp battle) WDE: Winovich NG: Mone DT: Hurst SDE: Gary OLB: McCray ILB: Bush Jr. VIP: Hudson CB: ??? (Camp battle) FS: Kinnel SS: Metellus ...there, don't say I never gave you anything. If you want to know about the (??? Camp Battle) you're looking at IMO Crawford, Black and DPJ at WR + Perry (likely suspended), McDoom, Martin in the slot. Onwenu/Ruiz/JBB/Runyan Jr. on the right side of the line with a couple of freshman getting a good look. The assumption is Hill and Long are your starting CBs.

Yeah, because you can only read MgoBlog if your an incredibly invested and obsessive fan. You guys need to chill, he just asked who the FB was. Imagine if that was your son or little brother just getting his feet wet in his interest of Michigan football. Asks a quick question, only to get blasted by a bunch of cock-bag 'expert' fans.

I think the difference between the WR's and CB's is that at receiver we perceive that we are going to be pretty good there regardless of who emerges. I for one do not have that same confidence at CB. As you mentioned, I think we all thought that Hill and Long would have seperated themselves from the pack. Yet I think the best performance we have saw with our own eyes from the group is K. Washington in the spring game(as you mentioned above we can't overrate that too much). So will we have 4/5 guys ready to go from day one to fill those 2/3 positions? Or a bunch of guys quite not ready for big time that will have to grow as the season goes along. This is the largest question mark on our squad and the difference from us maintaining are trajectory as a 10+ win team or taking a slight step back this year as they gain their footing.

when there's no legit deep ball threat. If Speight learns to just arm punt, then maybe we can get lucky a couple of times as our giant wr's braylon us out of some trouble spots.

The whole scheme - especially with TE sets and Deveon at TB - was predicated on shrinking the field to a phone booth and then penalizing the D with the deep ball. The deep ball is the constraint. Whether it's Speight's poor deep ball or early Rudock's poor deep ball, the JH offense is limited. Rudock missed fairly easy throws vs a Utah and MSU that likely swing those games. Speight missed 4-5 vs Iowa that put the offense in neutral/1st gear.

Really not understanding the consternation some here have regarding Speight. He was overall a solid QB last year before he broke his collarbone, and even then showed flashes of brilliance afterward against a couple of great defenses. He was statistically one of the top QBs in the B1G last year and will only improve from there. If his WR corps is dependable I think he will have a very solid year, probably top 3 passing in the conference.
