From the paper whose name we dare not say (nor link):

Michigan sophomore Kyle Mueller secured a spot in the U.S. Open with a five-under 135 on Monday in a 36-hole sectional qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Ohio.

As the runner-up, Mueller earned one of the site’s four qualifying spots and will compete as an amateur at the U.S. Open on June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

Illinois golfer Nick Hardy bested Mueller to win the qualifier by one stroke, shooting six-under 64 in Round 2. Mueller’s teammate Tom Swanson tied for 32nd at seven-over 147.

Mueller, from Athens, Ga., posted rounds of two-under 68 and three-under 67.

“I played great all day,” Mueller said in a release. “It’s the best my game has felt since the end of the fall season. I drove the ball and putted really well. My course management and having Chris (O’Neill) on the bag is what made the difference. We put the ball in the right spots, and that’s exactly what you had to do on this golf course. It still doesn’t feel real.”

Mueller was first-team All-Big Ten and became the first Wolverine to finish a season with a per-round scoring average below 72 (71.72).

Only a sophomore, too. The future is bright for this program.

The B1G Championship drought has got to end soon.

someone to root for.  I usually just watch to see great golf being played since my favorite player (Freddy Couples) doesn't have a shot in majors anymore.

Mueller is using his education to make intelligent decisions.  He definitely chose the right Ohio qualifer to compete in.  Compare these:

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (Springfield Country Club)

Medalist: Nick Hardy

Other qualifiers: Kyle Mueller, Patrick Wilkes-Krier, Charlie Danielson

POWELL, Ohio (Wedgewood Golf/Kinsale Golf)

Medalist: Carlos Ortiz
Other qualifiers: Bryson DeChambeau, Ethan Tracy, Brendan Steele, Spencer Levin, Wes Short, Kevin Streelamn, Jason Kokrak, Scottie Scheffler, Luke Donald, Jason Allred, Richard Schembechler, Patrick Rodgers

Great decision-making to go along with some great golf.  It wasn't all fun and games at this ssectional, though.  Tony Finau lost the last spot in a playoff.
