UM fan pursues dream in Tuscaloosa

Submitted by Look Up_See Blue on

It's been awhile since I posted on this board.  And I wanted to share something with my fellow MGoBloggers.

Back in January I was at a pretty low point in my life.  A really close friend of mine encouraged me to pursue my dreams.  I didn't take him seriously at first, but then decided that I only live once on this earth and to get off my arse and take care of business.

My dream has always been to play Major League Baseball ever since I was a little boy.  My dad grew up in the Bronx and worked at Yankee Stadium as a kid and had many stories for me.  (I hate the Yankees by the way, Go Tigers)

I played my whole life up through college and then just figured that was the end once I finished school.  I started doing some research and saw that the Major League Scouting Bureau conducts open tryouts in the summer.  So I decided that I was going to attend as many of them as I could, and started training immediately.

Fast forward to now.  After approximately 5 months of training in the gym, and throwing bullpens, and pitching in a few games on an adult summer league team, I will leave Nashville today and travel down to Birmingham to stay overnight with a friend, and then head to Tuscaloosa early in the morning.  I will be trying out as a LHP.  It's kind of fitting that I will be doing all of this in enemy territory.  The funny part is I traveled up to Kentucky Sunday night for an early morning tryout Monday but it was cancelled because of rain.

Sorry if this post is too long, there's a lot more to it but I wanted to give the short version and figured some of my fellow Michigan fans out there would appreciate it.  Please wish me luck and send me some prayers, I sure need them.

Thanks so much!

Prayer sent your way.  Good luck, dude. No matter what, you are pursuing your dreams, so doubts will never cloud your mind.

dream chases you!

But seriously, hope it works out for you.   My dream was always to create a wall of paperwork to protect pharmaceutical companies from the evils of the FDA and those stupid consumers.  I encouraged my little brother to be a artist, he's a very happy man.  I'm not complaining, my life is good.

Wish I could go to T-Town and cheer you on. Good luck homie and leave it all on the field. Most of us dont have the talent to even be taken seriously by scouts. All MGo prayers go out to you hoping you make it to the Big Leagues...and stick

Best of luck.

If you make it to the show as a lefty you can make enough money that you could reopen the publisher so Brian doesn't have to use kickstarter any more.

win/win

However this works out at least you chose a path and commited to it.

No matter what happens, simply the decision to put yourself on the line is a triumph in itself.  The going for it can be as fulfilling as whatever the original dream had to offer.

Thanks for putting it out there so we can root for you!

Dining advice while in Tuscaloosa:

1. Eat at City Cafe in nearby Northport for a great meat and 3 diner.

2. Eat at Dreamland BBQ, its legendary.

3. 15th Street Diner, if its still there.

Its only open during the week.

Skip Dreamland and go to Archibalds. Much better.

Skip 15th St dinner. Same idea as City Cafe, but not as good.

Hit Nicks in the Sticks, and have a few Nickademus's. Make sure you arent driving though.

Chucks or Surin for sushi.

Get a pitcher at the Houndstooth and sit on the patio people watching. Then go down the street to Gilletes to check out the sorority talent.

Waysider is a must for breakfast. The Bear ate there every game day.

Rama Jamas for lunch. Its in the shadow of the BDS and full of old Bama memoriblia. Plus the owner, Gary, is a great guy.
