Ultimate Not-Ennui Showdown?

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on July 11th, 2013 at 12:26 PM

I posted this in the Showdown thread, but then I figured maybe we should get a broader discussion going on it.  I say we all lean on our dear leaders to get an ultimate showdown of the ennui we've inflicted on the world after we wrap up our exploration of our own worst memories.  Here are a few ideas I had for starters:

Remy Hamilton in '94.  Gallon Cloaking Device.  Kolesar goes nuts in the waning seconds against OSU in '88.  Braylonfest obviously.  2-0 win over NoDak in the Frozen Four.  Pretty much anything connected with the name "John Cooper."  The Trey.  Trey getting the steal to lead us to victory over Sparty.  Touchdown Manningham.  Where's the Threat?

Any other games that should go on the list?

It seems almost cruel to pick on Minnesota, but the late comeback @Minnesota in 2003 should be up there. Thirty-eight second half points, with 31 of those points coming in the 4th quarter to win by 3 on the road.

I know I'm picking nits, but the '97 PSU showdown in Happy Valley was dubbed "Judgment Day," not D Day.  Of course, I agree with your point that this game was a "Not Ennui" moment for the ages.

Here's a NY Times article leading up to the game:  http://www.nytimes.com/1997/11/08/sports/college-football-battles-of-unbeatens-games-players-play-for.html

Crazy to think that was the first time in 26 years that a weekend featured two matchups of Top 5 teams.  And I love the fact that we not only won, but also dominated.  Daydrion ... we will never forget.

Hunwick was legendary in this game

I think it was especially sweet because there were so many North Dakota trolls on every hockey website I went to all proclaiming how North Dakota was going to win 6-0 maybe 9-0 on their way to a national championship. It was just so beautifull satisfying for Hunwick and Co. to get that win

This one was the opener against Virginia (and Tiki Barber) in which Michigan went down 17-0, scored 3 TD's in the 4th Q and on the last one had to wait for a ref to signal whether Mercury was inbounds or not.  I may or may not have sprained something in the celebration afterward.

Brendan Morrison's OT winner in 1996 against Colorado College to win the National Championship / Frozen Four, where I think I hugged 3-4 people I didn't know.

There were a lot of awesome wins in the b-ball tournament this year, but the KU and 'Cuse games were ridiculously stressful.  Especially KU.  Until Burke hit that shot it looked like we had pretty much zero chance.  Then when it went to OT the feeling was sort of "Sweet baby Jesus, don't let that amazing comeback/shot go to waste."

On the other hand, the Florida game, to book a ticket to the Final Four, was an absolute blast.  The domination from start to finish, Stauskas going bananas, it was all perfect.  You can't beat groaning because the other team cut it to 15 only to celebrate another dunk/three seconds later.  Can't think of a more enjoyable time involving a Michigan sporting event.
