Tyler O'Connor or Chad Kelly

Submitted by seniorbearcat on

Which QB picks up the UM offer? I saw Chad Kelly's picture up on scout as visiting and he does have an impressive offer list with over a dozen BCS offers like Alabama, FSU, Clemson, Tenn etc.

I think we'll probably end up offering both. I'd be happy with either one, but Kelly is probably a little bit more talented.

His dad sure lost a lot of Super Bowls, though.

If I remember Kelly's HOF speech correctly, doesn't he also have a son that is ill?  I vaguely remember that.

Also: I just saw the other thread that Chad is Jim's nephew not son.

I watched O'Connor's highlights last night and came away from the following:

He doesn't seem to have a particularly strong arm.

He underthrows deep receivers at times.

His speed is unimpressive but he's not a statue.

He moves around well in the pocket and makes throws with guys in his face.

He can put touch on the ball when he needs to.

He has pretty decent size - not the tallest guy but reasonably thick.

He seems accurate, but of course I was only watching highlights.

It's worth repeating: I am not a coach or scout or anything like that.

O'Connor looks to me like an MSU quarterback.  You know, the kind without great athleticism, a great arm, etc. . . . but could still get the job done.  I don't think he's a future first round pick or anything, but if we can't get one of these high-profile kids (Pike, Kiel, etc.), he wouldn't be a bad backup option.

And I am not saying I wouldn't want him, I just never thought accuracy was one of his strong attributes.  I also didn't know he was recovering from a torn ACL.  On my search for his stats I came across this article that was just published today about him and his recovery progress.

BTW Appleby's stats from last year = 93-of-187 passing for 1,427 yards and 14 TDs, 57 rushes for 18 yards and one TD.

Hey guys, I live in New York and in fact go to Canisius, the rival of the team that Chad Kelly plays for. While they did snap our 5 game win streak over them with him at the helm it was more a result of their insanely fast RB. Kelly doesn seem to throw very well but from what I saw is very fast and is a halfway decent corner (note this is Western New York football so who knows how good he really is). For a little perspective my school has produced three D-1 talent players in the past 3 years. John Urschel who is a guard at Penn State, James Gaines who is the starting middle linebacker at University of Miami (FL), and mst recently Travis Eman, who turned down offers from TCU, Syracuse, Boston College and the Univesity of Buffalo. He seems to have serious character issues according to kids at his school/ on his team. Sorry if my post isnt up to Mgoblog standards I don't post much.

EDIT: Removed unsubstantiated rumors.

MOD EDIT: Removed the other unsubstantiated rumor [ZL]

Can you remove the section about Chad's habits?  It seems to be outside the purview of what should be shared here, in my opinion.

I know that Gunner Kiel and Maty Mauk are both heavy ND leans...but both of them will not go there, unless I am assuming wrong.

So what does that mean for the other QB- from the film both Mauk and Kiel look like stellar players and I would love to have either one sign with Mich. Am I missing the reasoning why they are not being considered as future U of M players?

Kiel isn't really that interested in Michigan.

Mauk seems to be interested in a couple schools more than Michigan (particularly Missouri and Notre Dame), and a lot of Michigan fans aren't that excited about Mauk.

I'm not a big fan.  I don't like his throwing motion and I've heard some genuine concerns about his attitude.  The last guy I heard similar concerns about was Austin White, and we saw how that turned out.  So yeah.  I don't think his so-so talents are worth the risk.
