Two Michigan players have Heisman odds listed @ VegasInsider: Peppers and.....

Submitted by PeterKlima on

As of yesterday, Peppers is listed at 12/1 odds. He has the fifth best odds right now, however, I personally don't think he will win for a few reasons.

I was surprised to see only one other Michigan player high enough to have his own odds listed for bettors:

Wilton Speight !!!

www.vegasinsider.com/college-football/story.cfm/story/1797777

Of course, Wilton's odds are not good.  They sit at 1000/1.  But, the MERE FACT he is specifically listed on any Heisman odds list is just.... maybe the most surprising thing all year to me. Just a great job by the staff on a kid who had a much different future not too long ago....

It is likely that it is purely based on his position as QB for an unbeaten team, but I would have thought maybe Chris Evans, Khalid Hill (TD machine), Jourdan Lewis, etc. would be up their with Wilt the Stilt.

Nope - just the big man and Mr. Peppers.

Really?? Taco??

Of course none of the above (or Wilton) are actually going to win the Heisman, but saying that a defensive end who has missed a quarter of the season and has 4 sacks is more of a Heisman threat than the QB of an undefeated top 2 team is just a tad absurd.

but Speight is the one who is in position to put up huge numbers. Of course it's unlikely. But if Michigan is #1 and he's having monster games - well it's still unlikely. He would also have to outshine Peppers. But he would get into the conversation at least. The players you mentioned wouldn't.

I don't think Peppers should have Heisman hopes either.  Most of the guys on the list have no shot.  The point is that people usually give the "field" the same long shot odds after the top group of players.  The fact they broke out Wilt means he has better odds than all the other people who also won't win it....

As I pointed out yesterday, Wilton Speight's numbers are very comparable to Drew Henson's 8 game run in 2000.

Brian disputed this saying that "offenses are better now".  While I concede the point that Harbaugh/Drevno's O is much more diverse than Carr/Deboard...  Wilton is NOT throwing to David Terrell with Anthony Thomas in the back field and a full line of Future NFL OL in front of him.

Henson had maybe a bit more to work with, vs. more unsophisticated Defenses.... and Wilton's numbers today are right there.

The kid is all right.

Speight has a lot more to work with across the board even before you get to the Harbaugh/Drevno advantage. At the skill positions, especially in terms of depth, the talent on this team blows anything Henson had out of the water. There is no David Terrell-level physical specimen, but Butt, Darboh, and Chesson are all getting drafted next year, with Butt and Chesson almost certainly going on the first two days. This team also features four really good running backs, even if none of them individually is as good as Anthony Thomas. This is before you get to other key young guys such as McDoom and Asiasi and versatile guys like Hill. On top of that, the line absolutely features guys with NFL futures.

It is easy to forget that from 98 to about 2003, Carr pulled in Top 10 classes every year.  One of those classes, 98 I think was #1.  That 2000 Michigan team was STACKED.  It is often mentioned here as a team that should have won the NC.

Lets take a look a bit more closely, shall we?

QB Drew Henson, John Navarre - both NFL

RB Anthony Thomas, BJ Askew, Chris Perry, Justin Fargas - all NFL

WR David Terrell (1st round NFL) , Marquis Walker, Ronald Bellomy - NFL

TE Bennie Joppru - NFL and got injured

OL (where this team was incredible)

LT Jeff Backus - long time NFL starter

LG  Steve Hutchinson - long time NFL starter & possible Hall of Famer

C David Brandt - Weakest OL man that year.  Still played about 5 NFL seasons.

RG Jonathan Goodwin - long time NFL starter

RT Mo Williams - long time NFL starter

2000 may be the Most Talented Michigan Offensive Line in school history.

What Wilton has around him is very good, and his coaches are great... but he does not have the starting talent to work with that Drew Henson did.

Look, Im not saying that Speight > Henson.  Its just that his stats are just about as good and he does not deserve to be classified as "scuffling through early season" by any stretch of the word.

Yes, a ton of names, but how many actually had true impact  on that team? Neither Fargus (who truly emerged at another school) nor Askew had 100 yards rushing for the season. Peppers (who I didn't mention previously) hasn't really been unleashed yet, and he's already topped that. Bellomy had 7 catches. Joppru didn't emerge as a receiving threat for another two seasons. For all the talent on paper, 2000 was by in large a four-player offense in terms of the skill positions. I will spot you the 2000 line being better, even though this one is solid in its own right. The NFL comparisons can't really be made yet, since none of these guys have entered the draft yet, but every indication is that this offense is littered with future pros. You can't discount the coaching difference (and general differences in current offenses), but it's hard to argue this current team doesn't have much greater versatility and depth in terms of the offensive weapons it can deploy.

I haven't seen anyone throw that kind of spiral and run an offense so well...maybe Vince Young (but he had an odd less than pretty motion.)  Vince however played on the biggest stage.  Lamar doesn't have that going for him.

I think Louisville will lose as some point - to BC, Houston (they need redemption to give Herman his payday.

Harbaugh had better up Peppers' touches if he wants to give him a chance.  Peppers needs to make good on it as well.  Jabrill did not make the TD happen against Illinois...what the hell... (Illinois was all over that.) The problem with giving Peppers more looks is that he draws more attention and snooping.  I can't wait for him to wing it to Chesson...it's coming.

1000:1 odds.  And because a 5000:1 longshot won the Premier League last year, and the Cubs are now in the World Series -- against Cleveland -- that means you're saying Speight is a lock to win.  I'm puttin' my hard-earned cash down, all of it.  'Bout 50 pesos.

He would certainly get an invite. Right now the top 5 consists of Lamar Jackson and a group of players that rotate by the week.  I mean, Stewart Mandel has Joe Mixon and Baker Mayfield in his top 5 right now.  If Speight puts up those numbers, including a big time performance on the road against OSU, and Michigan goes on to win the B1G title game with a 13-0 record, he would easily be in the top 5 and he would get an invite to NYC as the face of Michigan's team.

five times better than the 5000-1 odds of the Leicester City team winning the Premier League last Spring, and we know what happened there.

In reality. Wilton would need a completion rate of 90%, 400 yards passing yards and 5 touchdowns miimum every game, while at the same time, Lamar Jackson, DeShaun Watson and Jake Browning would have to leave the country and join ISIS.

Then there might be a chance - though Lamar Jackson still would get a couple first place votes...
